This document is the result of research into the history of Watsonia Barracks (now Simpson Barracks) by GHS member Marilyn Smith. It details the origin of street names in the surrounding area and includes biographical information on those after whom the streets were named. Updated December 2016.The Watsonia Barracks has been in use since WW2 and is today home to the Defence Force School of Signals. It was built on the property formerly owned by Ainslie Meares. In 1951, surrounding land was purchased for the extension of the barracks. The suburb of Yallambie was formerly part of the Barracks. A DVD of people at a reunion for Junior Legatees that joined Legacy in the 1940s. It was held at Watsonia Barracks on 29 July 2007. It was part of a collection of Legacy items from Valma Hutchinson (nee Wigg), a former junior legatee. These eight photos of the Army Survey Regiment’s Tug-of-War Team were most likely taken at Simpson Barracks, Watsonia in circa 1989. There is no information available on why the unit sent the team to Melbourne, the occasion, and the winner of this contest. It may have been a military athletics carnival held to commemorate Australia’s First Fleet bi- centenary, noting there was other members of Army Svy Regt on the bus who were not part of this team. The team’s coach was WO1 Ken Slater. Tug-of-War contests were very popular for the competitors and spectators, as they were often held at the Regiment as a component of inter-squadron athletics competitions, Flag Day verses the School of Military Survey, Bones Day verses the RAAF’s the School of Radio and a component of regimental training.These eight photos of the Army Survey Regiment’s Tug-of-War Team were most likely taken at a competition held at Simpson Barracks, Watsonia circa 1989. Anzac commemorative medallion issued to the next of kin of Private Thomas Emanuel Rollings - 1983 - 24th Battalion, Wangaratta who served at Gallipoli during WW1The Anzac Commemorative Medallion was instituted 1967. It was awarded to surviving members of the Australian forces who served on the Gallipoli Peninsula, or in direct support of the operations from close off shore, at any time during the period from the first Anzac Day in April 1915 to the date of final evacuation in January 1916.Bronze commemorative medallion depicting Simpson and his donkey on the front and Australia, New Zealand and the southern cross on the back.Medallion is set inside a plastic hinged lid box with a deep purple velvet lining. Original white cardboard box with two sections. Top section has brown paper label with handwritten address and white/blue stamp on outside. The medallion is cast in bronze and is approximately 75 millimetres high and 50 millimetres wide. The obverse of the medallion depicts Simpson and his donkey carrying a wounded soldier to safety. It is bordered on the lower half by a laurel wreath above the word ANZAC. The reverse shows a map in relief of Australia and New Zealand superimposed by the Southern Cross. The lower half is bordered by New Zealand fern leaves. The name and initials of the recipient is engraved on the reverse. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse and an additional troop of the Wangaratta squadron was raised at Cobram. In 1977, 8/13 VMR was reduced to an independent squadron, A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles, and in 1991 it was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of the new regiment. vmr, history, cmf, army reserve, hunter
