Melbourne melbourne Portrait Painting Sir William Irvine 3/4 length ...This is a portrait of Sir William Irvine, not in his judical robes, but those of Lt Governor of the State of Victoria. Irvine was a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1894 to 1904, as well as Attorney-General , he was later Premier. Retiring from state politics after a particularly bruising encounter with the Railway Unions, he entered federal politics as the member for Flinders. He became Federal Attorney General in the period 1913-1914. During World War One Irvine campaigned strongly for the introduction of the complusory military service (conscription) until being elevated to the bench in 1918. With his appointment as Chief Justice, he became a lieutenant governor in 1919, and was acting Governor for the state of Victoria for a period of nearly 3 years in the early 1930s. The painting is of interest for its subject (Irvine) and the artist who painted it, 5 times Archibald winner Sir John Longstaff.3/4 length portrait in oils of Sir William Irvine. Irvine is standing his finger resting on the deak. He is in Vice-Regal clothing, a black suit with plenty of gold braid.Signed and dated 1934 upper right cornerirvine william, longstaff john -

Booklet, The Shrine of Remembrance. A message to all Victorians from The Lieut. Governor The Hon. Sir William Irvine, 1928
... The Lieut. Governor The Hon. Sir William Irvine... Victorians from The Lieut. Governor The Hon. Sir William Irvine ...A brochure issued by the National War Memorial Committee of Victoria to inform the public about the plans for the Shrine of Remembrance and how they could contribute towards its cost. The Governor of Victoria points out that the need to remember, as 'To forget is to be false to the men who fell, to the cause for which they fell, and to ourselves. Let the whole people join in creating such a Monument as will keep the Names and Memories of the men fresh in the minds of our children's children.' The brochure mentions that the cost of the Shrine was estimated to be £180,000. Of this £80,000 was guaranteed and the remaining £100,000 needed to be raised. It shows that each contribution will be recorded within the crypt as one of those who gave the Memorial to the Nation. It also states 'Each contribution honours our men, redeems our promise that they shall never be forgotten, and helps in presenting to the nation a durable foundation to traditions of patriotism and self-sacrifice, and in the immediate future assists hundreds of worthy returned soldiers who, as a result of the temporary trade depression, are in need of employment. Actually, seven-tenths of the total cost of the Memorial will be expended in wages...' A sample of the type of receipt given to record donations is on page 3. An actual receipt is at 01207. Item was in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different items relating to the Shrine of Remembrance - including discussions on its location and design. Labelled 'Shrine of Remembrance S1 - S14' it was part of an old archive numbering system, that showed there has been efforts in the past to collect, order and save items of Legacy's history. (01181 - 01190, 01206 - 01210).A record of fundraising for the Shrine of Remembrance, this brochure asks Victorians to contribute approximately £100,000 to the building project. There was an effort to record historical events for the "Archive Committee" which collected this and other documents relating to the Shrine together in a file (see items 01181 - 01190, 01026 - 01210)Booklet x 4 pages, about fundraising for building the Shrine, on buff paper with black type and line drawing.memorial, shrine of remembrance -

Chief Justice in 1935 following the retirement of Sir William ...The portrait was presented by the legal profession ot the Court in 1946. It would appear to have been commissioned at the time of Chief Justice Mann's retirement. Charles Wheeler, had won the Archibald prize in 1933 and was the head of the art gallery schools during World War two. Chief Justice Sir Frederick Mann (1869-1958) studied the law and worked at the Crown Law Department before his stint in the Army during the Boer War. After the war, he practised as a barrister, mainly working in the common law and equity area including appearences in the High Court on constitutional matters. He was appointed to the bench in 1919 along with William Schutt, to help remedy a shortfall in the number of judges on the Bench, after measures of economy during World War One. He became Chief Justice in 1935 following the retirement of Sir William Irvine, and retired in 1944.The portrait is of interest because of whom it portrayed, it is a well executed work by a well known artist of the period.Half Length portriat painting in oils of Sir Frederick Mann, seated and balancing a book on his knee. ... present when the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir William Irvine, removed... present when the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir William Irvine, removed ...The unveiling of the Eltham Obelisk War Memorial was performed by the Rev. Padre Charles Tregear, assisted by Church of England vicar, Mr Safsford on August 3, 1919. Reproduced page 99 of "Pioneers & Painters." "Beneath a lonely pine tree on the hill crest out from Eltham, where the Greensborough Road junctions with the main Melbourne Road, Eltham has erected an everlasting tribute to the memory of the fallen heroes of the district. It is an obelisk of Harcourt granite in the rough, bearing an appropriate inscription and 27 names—an unpretentious monument by the wayside, which will stand for all time silently expressing the appreciation of the living for the sacrifice of the dead. The obelisk stands 14 feet high. ... Representatives of every house in the town, and many people from the surrounding district, gathered around the obelisk for the opening ceremony. The spring-like sunshine of the afternoon attracted everybody out of doors. There must have been 700 people present when the Lieutenant-Governor, Sir William Irvine, removed the draping of flags and revealed the names on the obelisk, the base of which was surrounded by wreaths and branches of wattle bloom, placed there by parents whose sorrow at the loss of sons was blunted, for the day at least, by feelings of pride. .." Age, Monday 4 August 1919, page 8 This was the memorial's orginal location. It has been relocated numerous times. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years.Digital image 4 x 5 inch B&W Negsepp, shire of eltham pioneers photograph collection, eltham, main road, bridge street, eltham war memorial, obelisk, obelisk corner -

The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years.Digital image 4 x 5 inch B&W Neg Print 9 x 12.5cmsepp, shire of eltham pioneers photograph collection, eltham, main road, eltham war memorial, bridge street, obelisk, obelisk corner -

It had died 50yrs before it fell and is estimated to be around 400 years old. It has a diameter of 1.3 m and is the only 'toe hold' tree in Nillumbik. Heritage Excursion - Killeavey Walk and Talk - Saturday 5th November Jane Woollard’s book Laughing Waters Road Art Landscape and Memory in Eltham devotes several chapters to the property Killeavey situated on the Yarra River at the end of Reynolds Road, Eltham. Jane has written about the natural history and indigenous history of the area and stories of the family who lived at Killeavey for many years. Killeavey was the home of Sir William Irvine, Victorian and Federal Parliamentarian and Supreme Court Judge. Later it was the home of his daughter Beatrice Morrison, a significant figure in the Eltham community. The original house was destroyed by fire and its replacement was demolished by Parks Victoria. Its sits high above the Yarra River and contains significant garden remnants. The surrounding bushland is valued for its significant plant communities. In September 2011 we visited Killeavey but without the benefit of the information more recently available from Jane’s research. We are fortunate that Jane will be joining us on this walk. There will be an extended stop at the house site for a discussion on the environment and history of the area. Inside the cover panels of Jane’s book is a reproduction of the complete artwork from ‘The Symbiogenesis Project: Laughing Waters 2011 by Aviva Reed and Paul Kalemba, as displayed in the Eltham Town Centre. This walk will start at 2 pm on Saturday 5th November at the corner of Laughing Waters and Overbank Roads. - EDHS Newsletter No. 230 October 2016fay bridge collection, 2016-11-05, activities, eltham, eltham district historical society, heritage excursion, kileavey, laughing waters road, parks victoria, cameron beardsall -

... to the present. Among the more noteworthy graves is that of Sir William... is that of Sir William Irvine, a former State Premier and Chief Justice ...BACKGROUND The Eltham Cemetery is of historic significance to the Eltham area. The Trust was established in 1858 and has administered and maintained the cemetery from that date right up to the present. Among the more noteworthy graves is that of Sir William Irvine, a former State Premier and Chief Justice of Victoria. Eltham Cemetery is surrounded on three sides by urban development. Montsalvat Artists Colony adjoins the remaining (eastern) side. A Joint Select Committee of Parliament called the “Mortuary Industry and Cemeteries Administration Committee" (MICA) enquired into the land requirements at the Eltham Cemetery in 1986. The MICA recommendations contained in its 1986 report are included in the Appendices attached to this report. Although the recommendations have not been adopted by the Government it is interesting to note that the MICA report recommended the use of the bulk of the land for cemetery purpose. In June of 1987, the Cemetery Trust was expanded to include additional members from the Eltham Community by the Minister for Health. At the same time, he instructed the Trust to resolve the land requirement issues. As a result of this Ministerial direction, Tract Consultants has been instructed by the Eltham Cemetery Trust to prepare a report addressing the issues raised in the Minister's letter (see Appendix 1) to the Trust. Principally, the study will examine options available for development of the Cemetery. These options will explore possible boundaries, cemetery design, vegetation, the overall environment, landscaping and financial planning for the Cemetery operations. Appendix 2 details the Cemetery Trusts Terms of Reference for the Study. Before commencing the study in detail, additional basic information was sought; viz: a) sub-soil and rock analysis; and b) feature survey by a Licensed Surveyor. The results from both exercises are included as appendices to this report. Section three includes a summary of the findings along with other analytical results. ... Premier Sir William Irvine. From age 13 she lived at ‘Killeavey... Beatrice Irvine was the daughter of former Victorian Premier Sir ...Beatrice Irvine was the daughter of former Victorian Premier Sir William Irvine. From age 13 she lived at ‘Killeavey’ off Laughing Waters Road (later accessed from Reynolds Road). In 1923 she married James Morrison and the couple received Killeavey as a wedding gift. The property supported fruit and vegetable growing as well as an impressive botanical garden. But James died in 1936 after a period of ill health, leaving Beatrice to support their six children. To make matters worse, the house was totally destroyed in the Black Friday bushfires in 1939 but was rebuilt. Beatrice became involved in community issues. In particular, she was an active member of the Eltham Women's Auxiliary, which was formed in 1945 to raise funds for the establishment of an Eltham War Memorial. From the outset, it was decided that this would take the form of a Baby Health Centre, a Pre-School and a Children’s Library, set in a garden of remembrance. Thanks to tireless fund-raising, the project came to fruition in the 1950s when, one by one, the three children's welfare buildings opened in Main Road (having previously been in temporary premises): they are collectively known as the Eltham War Memorial site. Beatrice continued to live at Killeavey and became well regarded as a botanist and naturalist. She died in 1989 and is buried in Eltham Cemetery with her husband and one of their sons. The (rebuilt) house has since been demolished. All that remains is a fragment of the garden. Sir William Irvine sat in the Victorian Parliament ...William Hill Irvine was born 6 July, 1858 in Newry, County Down, Ireland. He arrived in Melbourne December 1879 and taught at Geelong College. He was admitted to the Supreme Court in 1884 having qualified from Melbourne University and practiced in Melbourne. In 1891 he married Agnes Somerville Wanliss and they had one son, William Mitchell (1901 Armadale) and two daughters, Beatrice Wanliss (1899 Armadale) and Agnes Somerville Wanliss (1903 Armadale). Sir William Irvine sat in the Victorian Parliament (as Liberal Member for Lowan) from 1894 to 1906 and was Premier of Victoria from 1902 to 1904. He then switched to Federal politics and sat in the Commonwealth Parliament (as Liberal Member for Flinders) from 1906 to 1918. He was considered a potential Prime Minister, but his abrupt manner and hard-line conservatism (particularly his attitude to a railway strike) made him unacceptable even to many Liberals: he was known in Parliament as "Iceberg Irvine". He lived at Richmond, but in 1908 purchased land in Laughing Waters Road at Eltham, where he built the house ‘Killeavey’, initially as a weekend retreat. The site, a peninsula surrounded on three sides by the Yarra River, is of geological importance and has considerable cultural significance to the Wurundjeri. In 1912 Sir William moved to Killeavey and in 1913 purchased more land, extending his property to Reynolds Road. In 1923 he shifted to Toorak, donating Killeavey to his daughter Beatrice as a wedding gift. Sir William was a founding member of the RACV and was Acting Governor of Victoria from 1931 to 1934.
