It is an excellent overview of one of Australia's greatest construction projects (along with the Snowy River Hydro Scheme). This book highlights in detail the planning, programming and construction phases throughout the life of the construction from 1919 onwards until the 1960's. There were a few copies made using carbon paper and a type writer on foolscap paper. This book with its Parts A to D, photographs and plans/tables is very significant to the Kiewa Valley region as it details "the bones" of one of Australia's greatest construction projects that was undertaken by Governments that had the foresight and the will to undertake such a costly and environmentally imposing project for the benefit of their states and their country. This project was at a time when financial and security pressures where at a high and fluctuating level. This project was the major contributor to the expansion and diversity of non rural activities within the region. It was directly and indirectly the cause of better transportation avenues, tourism and the lifting of the regions natural facilities to sustain an ever increasing long term and short term population. This large hard (thick cover) book has both front and back sides fastened to the spine by two brass screw on pins. The book title, author/compiler and the commissioning organisation (STATE ELECTRICITY COMMISSION OF VICTORIA) together with the SEC Vic emblem are all embossed in gold script. The spine is also embossed with the title. The role that the Australian Survey Corps would perform for National Development Projects was just being developed with the post WWII capability and manpower. The initial Surveys conducted by the Australian Survey Corps were significant in preliminary planning that allowed the project to proceed. These directives were written by Colonel L. Fitzgerald, OBE in July 1946 who was Director of the Australian Survey Corps from June 1942 – January 1960 where he directed The LHQ Cartographic Coy (Bendigo) to Photogrammetrically plot detail of the Kosciusko 1 Mile sheet area and for 5 Fd Survey Coy (Chatswood, Sydney) to establish horizontal and vertical control. It also required the Deputy Assistant Director of Military Survey, Eastern Command, at Victoria Barracks in Sydney to liaise with the NSW Lands Dept for existing control. Both the DAD of Military Survey Lt. Col. HPG Clews and the OC Major H.F. Eggeling were to go onto serve with the Snowy Mountains Authority (SMA) both significantly contributing to the success of the project. This extract is from the book “The Major” Lt. Col. Hugh Powell Gough Clews by Noel R Gough which can be found on the Survey Corps web site "rasvy.org.au/History" "When the war ended 2nd Field Survey Coy was broken up. Clews had already been promoted to the position of Deputy Assistant Director of Military Survey, Eastern Command, at Victoria Barracks in Sydney. Late in 1945, I (John Cavill) was posted to 5 Fd Svy Coy at Chatswood in Sydney, under the command of Major H.F. Eggeling: the same Major "Bert" Eggeling who was to become, in 1949, the Chief Surveyor and creator of the Survey Branch of the Snowy Mountains Authority. Clews joined the SMA in January 1950; I (John Cavill) followed in April the same year. It is unfortunate that, because of some confusion over the title "Major", a myth has grown up (outside Snowy circles) that Clews was in charge of all the surveys on the Snowy. The existence of that myth does great injustice to the other "Major"; the one that designed, set up and ran the branch through the most difficult first four years of its existence: Major Bert Eggeling." Both "Majors" contributed significantly but in different ways, Clews conducted much of the extremly difficult field surveys. Two x A4 Photocopies of original typed pages of text, stapled top LH corner.Whilst the photocopy is unclear the document appears to be signed by Colonel L. Fitzgerald, OBE who was Director of the Australian Survey Corps from June 1942 – January 1960.royal australian survey corps, rasvy, fortuna, army survey regiment, army svy regt, asr, snowy mountains, 5 fd svy coy -

The construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Scheme is a well-documented part of our nation’s history and a leading example of Australian innovation and ingenuity. As far back as the 1880s, Australians had been considering diverting water from some of Australia’s best-known rivers – the Murray, Murrumbidgee, Snowy and Tumut – to drought-proof parts of NSW and Victoria. It was not until 1944 that Commonwealth and State governments formed a committee to examine the development of water resources in the Snowy Mountains area. As a result of their work, on 7 July 1949, the Commonwealth Parliament passed legislation to establish a Statutory Authority and start construction of the Snowy Scheme. NSW. Construction was completed in 1974 at a total cost of $820 million. On completion, the Scheme consisted of seven power stations, 16 major dams, 80 kilometres of aqueducts and 145 kilometres of interconnected tunnels.non-fictionThis book tells the human story of the first decade of building the great Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, with adventures and anecdotes told by the workers themselves, and illustrated with unusual photographs. They also provided pipes for the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. Another early major contract for ROCLA was with the Victorian State Rivers and Water Supply Commission for the provision of pipes for the new sewerage system in the new town of Tallangatta, relocated due to the enlargement of the Hume Weir. ...ROCLA was founded by two friends, Walter Robertson and Heaton Clarke, who combined the first letters of their surnames to create the brand name in 1922. The company first came to the Albury – Wodonga area in late 1927 when tenders were called for the construction of their works and office in Kiewa Street, Albury. They were a popular provider of concrete pipe culverts and reinforced concrete troughs for farm use. In 1949 ROCLA began operations at Bandiana. Initially this was to produce pipes for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme which officially began construction on 17 October 1949. This contract called for the supply of 21,000 six inch pipes and 7,000 nine inch pipes. At this time ROCLA employed 15 men and this job required about 80 bags of cement per day. By 1964 ROCLA Concrete Pipes was Wodonga’s largest secondary industry. A new concrete pole manufacturing plant was established in the early 1980s. ROCLA poles also dot the landscape in several Australian States. ROCLA poles also hold up many of the Hume Freeway bridge and support the Union Bridge which crosses the Murray River at Albury. After various changes in management, ROCLA was taken over by New Zealand's Fletcher Building group in 2005. In September 2021 ROCLA became part of the Civilmart Group.
