This photograph shows empty maximum traction tram at right angle to the rails with both trolley poles lowered rests against a span pole. It is clearly marked as Municipal Tramways but no car number or destination is evident. Photo shows the view looking east along Bridge St from Grenville St. Bogie tram 35 is in the shadows. A bus is entering Bridge St, In the view are Dickins Self service grocery, Morseheads store, CTA Hotel, and the Bucks Head Hotel. On the rear, Wal Jack to Ken Magor of Newcastle has written "No. 35 bogie to Victoria St, 1948. Bridge St from Sturt and Grenville Sts. Note two green lights on the span pole under neon sign which guards the Bridge St (bottom light) and Victoria St single track. Mt Pleasant light is on opposite side pole. White Porcelain “Made in Occupied Japan” electrical insulators. Insulators can be dated from September 1945 to April 1952 during the allied occupation of post WWII Japan. Pin insulators were manufactured specifically for Australian export. Pin insulators are made of non-conductive porcelain and were used to create a barrier between outer wrapped suspended wiring and threaded wood or metal dowel. Pin insulators such these have been found on utility poles around Australia.Porcelain insulators stamped with “Made in Occupied Japan” are often viewed with much interest by collectors given their connection to WWII and short seven year manufacturing time span. Pin insulators such as these are an example of Australia’s continued electronic development which began in the late 19th century. Collection of seven white porcelain insulators made in Occupied Japan. Insulators are cylindrical in shape, with indentation at top. The indentation creates a flat mushroom top head. Insulators display a manufacturer stamp at the bottom of the cylinder. Items show two different wire terminations - fully wrapped - 7 wires and part wrapped and secured by bending the wire. Shows how the galvanized span wire - 7 strands - can corrode within the insulator and lead to failure if not inspected and replaced. The items were probably erected by the SEC during the mid 1930s and replaced by the BTM 2024. Salvaged from Wendouree Parade during overhead span wire replacement and repair work March 2024 undertaken by the BTM. Item show corrosion of part of the eye bolt that supports the overhead in Wendouree Parade that has occurred primarily around the screw thread. Also shows how the span wire is terminated around a thimble that is fitted to the eye bolt. The item was probably erected by the SEC during the mid-1930s and replaced by the BTM 2024. Salvaged from Wendouree Parade during overhead span wire replacement and repair work in March 2024 undertaken by the BTM. Colour slide, Kodak, white cardboard of trams W5 725 (North Balwyn) and W2 408 (Spencer St), both route 48 at the intersection of Church St, Burwood Road and Bridge Road Hawthorn with the driver? of 725 getting on the roof to retrieve a trolley pole (with wheel) that cant be positioned because of the overhead span wire.
