The Rev. Canon Alan Nichols AM is an Anglican minister and author. After serving the Church in Sydney as parish priest and media spokesman, he was CEO of a family welfare agency in Melbourne, and Archdeacon of Melbourne. He then served for seven years in refugee work, first in Thailand with Jesuit Refugee Service Asia Pacific, and then with World Vision Australia. He was present in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide, and is a Canon of St John's Cathedral, Gahini, in Rwanda. Author of more than 20 books and monographs, mostly in the areas of refugee studies, Christian approaches to public policy, Christian ethics and biography. The most significant are Reluctant Conscience (Dove, Blackburn) 1984; Refugee Dilemmas: Reviewing the Comprehensive Plan of Action for Vietnamese Asylum Seekers, with Paul White (LawAsia, Manila) 1993; Life & Death Decisions: Teach Yourself Ethics (Acorn, Melbourne) 1997; Rescued by Angels, with Alexis Bilindabagabo (Acorn, Melbourne) 2001; On the Path to Mutual Respect (Victorian Council of Churches) 2007; Escape from West Papua (Acorn, Melbourne) 2007. Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts was a British Soldier who served in India, Abyssinia and Afghanistan before leading the British Forces to success in the Second Boer War. He became the last Commander-in-Chief of the Forces before the post was abolished in 1904. While in South Africa he was at the Siege of Kimberley, the Battle of Paardeberg, the Battle of Poplar Grove, the Battle of Diamond Hill and the Battle of Bergendal. Roberts received many awards: Victoria Cross (1858-India); Companion of the Order of the Bath (1872-Afghanistan); Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (1878-Afghanistan);Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath (1880-Afghanistan) and Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire in the same year. He was Commander-in Chief, India in 1885 was advanced to Knight Commander of the Order of India (1887) and then Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire later that year. He became Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Star of India. The same year he relinquished his Indian command and became Commander-in-Chief of British Forces in 1895 made a Knight of the Order of St Patrick. In 1899 he returned to South Africa to take overall command of British Forces in the Second Boer War. December 1900 Roberts handed over command to Lord Kitchener and returned to England where more honours were awarded. He was made a Knight of the Order of the Garter; created Earl Roberts of Kandahar, Pretoria and Waterford and Viscount St Pierre. He became a Knight of Grace of the Order of St John (1901) and then Knight of Justice of the Order of St John. The Kaiser awarded him the German Order of the Black Eagle and was among the original recipients of the Order of Merit in the 1902 Coronation Honours. Roberts died in 1914. This religious book by John Scott, D.D., late Rector of St. Giles in the Fields, London, sets about to explain some of the church's doctrine. The book originated from the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute. The book was printed for Walter Kettilby, a bookseller and publisher in London in the 17th century. He died in 1699 and was buried at St. Paul’s Cathedral.The book is significant for its age – it is one of the oldest books in Flagstaff Hill’s collection, published in 1696, well before Australia was colonised. The publisher, Walter Kettilby, passed away three years later. The book expresses the writer’s interpretation of Christian doctrine giving an insight into the doctrines and beliefs of the 17th century. The book was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. which has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. Victorian Heritage Database: St Paul's Cathedral, Bendigo was built in stages. The nave was built in 1868, the tower in 1872-73 and the transepts and sanctuary in 1926-27. Robert Love was the architect, although the final stage was supervised by architects Gawler and Drummond. Cathedral status was transferred from the original cathedral All Saints to St Paul's in 1981. The Gothic style cathedral is constructed of red brick with stone dressings. It has a simple cruciform plan comprising a six bay nave, transepts and sanctuary. A tall tower centrally located at the west end dominates the exterior. The peal of eight bells was cast by Meares and Co of London and installed in 1873. The interior features elaborately cusped roof principals; an organ by Alfred Fuller built in 1883 with a console and pipes added later from St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney; and notable stained glass by Ferguson, Urie and Lyon. St Paul's Rectory was built in 1885 to a design by the architect WC Vahland. The Parish Office and Hall was built as a Sunday School in 1898 to a design by FW Lehmann. St Paul's Cathedral is of architectural, aesthetic and historical significance to the state of Victoria. The cathedral is a significant example of the Early English Gothic style. The tower, with its distinctively detailed pinnacles, its spiral staircase and carillon of eight bells, is a notable feature and a town landmark. The interior is aesthetically important for its decorative detail. The roof structure, rising some 18.3 metres from the 11 metre walls in suspended semi-circles from the pillarless nave, is highly significant for both its considerable technical achievement and its aesthetic appeal. The interior features fine examples of carved timber fixtures and fittings. The interior is also noteworthy for the high quality of its stained glass, especially the twelve apostle windows by Ferguson, Urie and Lyon. The cathedral also features a number of important movable objects such as the finely carved eagle lectern in oak, the ornately carved timber chair in the sanctuary, the two baptismal fonts, the ornately carved canons' stalls with eagle motifs in the sanctuary and the two large candle holders. Important works of art include the opus sectile reredos in mosaic; the sculpture of Madonna and Child in Queensland birch by sculptress Leopoldine Mimovich; and the carved figures of St Peter and St Paul at the high altar by the sculptress Ola Cohn. St Paul's Cathedral complex has historical associations with the Anglican church in Bendigo, particularly the rivalry between St Paul's and the original cathedral, All Saints, and the long and controversial debate about 'High Church versus Low Church'. St LUKES ANGLICAN CHURCH BENDIGO In 1852, a party of Cornish miners, refusing to give up and having dug, by hand, down nearly 70 feet ‘got their reward. Suddenly, their picks sank into soft pipe-clay, white, satin-smooth and seemingly depthless. The men began tunnelling. Presently, the roof forming above them showered gold at their feet – the secret of Bendigo’s famous White Hills lay revealed.’ In the ‘wild rush’ that followed, when ‘the White Hills yielded enormously and some pretty piles were made’, a young Anglican priest, John Herbert Gregory, held the first Anglican church service at White Hills in 1853. The Hamlet of White Hills was surveyed and mapped in 1854 and, by 1863, St Luke’s Church in White Hills was opened on ‘an elevated site’ in a generously sized ‘church reserve’. St AUGUSTINE'S CHURCH MYERS FLAT Early diggers to this area were men named Myers and Nicholls, hence the name - Myers Flat and Myers Creek. 1857 saw the discovery of gold in the area and in less than one month 1000 ounces of gold per week resulted. The number of diggers in the Myers Creek or Burnt Gully totalled 4000 to 5000. Myers Creek consisted of several shops and buildings, two hotels, a race course and a lock-up built of logs. On November 6th, 1864, the opening of the new church of St Augustine' took place. The first mass was celebrated by the Reverand Dean Hayes, of St Killian's Sandhurst. The church of gothic design was built by a local contractor, and with bricks made from local clay. The church also has a fire place and is widely known as "The church with the Chimney. For many years it was also a Catholic school. St AUGUSTINE'S CHURCH INGLEWOOD The church features an Early English design from 1864 and Decorated Gothic extensions from 1884.Notable elements include the sanctuary with the Catto Memorial window and interior cusped arcading of the wainscot. Architectural attribution is given to Vahland and Getzschmann for one or both sections. St JOHNS CHURCH (PRESBYTERIAN) BENDIGO The church's architect was W C Vahland VIA, and the builder was N Langstaff. It was built in April 1890, and opened in Feb 1891. The tender price was 2,481 pounds. The church style was gothic, built by the Congregational Church to replace an earlier building built in 1858. St Johns bought the church in 1949 and made additions in 1951. THE SACRED HEART CATHEDRAL BENDIGO Originally designed in 1895 by Reed, Smart and Tappin of Melbourne, the first stage opened in September 1901; the second stage began in January 1954 and was expected to finish in late 1976. Skilled stonemasons were brought from overseas for the completion. The Exterior built from Geelong sandstone and Harcourt granite, matching the original materials for color consistency. The cathedral is designed in the early English Gothic style. It Features a tower and spire weighing several thousand tons, with the spire rising 282 ft. from the floor and topped by a 10 ft. cross.Interior. The original stained glass window, made in Birmingham, England, is above the main entrance on the west side. Marble for the floor was imported from Vincenzo and Via Reggio, Italy; Sicilian Pearl marble is used in the four chapels. Ceilings in the chapels feature Western red cedar and yellow pine timbers.The transept includes Australian blackwood paneling and 12 carved shields representing the apostles. The internal height from floor to ceiling is 80 ft.Artistic Elements. Two large tapestries, specially designed and crafted by Mrs. Carrington, hang in the sanctuary as a symbolic link to Bendigo. ST PAULS BENDIGO The nave was built in 1868 and the tower in 1873. The nave is notable for unusual ceiling with metal and timber overlay members. The tower notable for early brick and bold Gothic influenced design. The church was opened on 12th Nov 1868 and a new chancel sanctuary and Transepts were added on 22 Oct 1927. The architect was Robert A Love. CONGREGATIONAL CHURCHES IN BENDIGO Three main Congregational church buildings existed in Bendigo: at the corner of Forest and Mackenzie Streets (the original site), on Quarry Hill (corner of Russell and Gladstone Streets), and on Calvin Street (later the Lutheran Church). The Calvin Street church was named in honor of John Calvin, a notable figure who lived in the area. In June 1858, 1.5 acres of land were purchased at the Forest and Mackenzie Streets corner for £1200.The first church was built on this site in November 1858 and later enlarged in May 1867 to seat 500 people. A prefabricated parsonage stood nearby until about 1920, serving as a caretaker's cottage for several years. In 1890, foundation stones for a new church designed by W.C. Vahland were laid, featuring a tall tower and two gable crossings (reduced from three to save costs). The new church opened on February 26, 1890, costing £2483. The contractor was N. Longstaff. Some architectural elements, such as the chancel, were added later when St. John's Presbyterian took over the building. Congregational attendance declined, leading to the purchase and alteration of a brick school complex in Olinda Street to serve as their headquarters.The timber church on Russell Street and the Calvin Street property were sold.The valuable Forest Street property was eventually sold to a London sect and later became an investment for the Methodist Church.Historical information on seven denominational churches in Bendigo and Inglewood. Five swinging bells were installed at Sacred Heart Cathedral in September 2001 and were rung for the first time 30/9/2001. The cast bronze bells were made in France and their eventual size and tones were decided based on the size of the belfry. STANWAY, ALFRED (b. 9 Sept 1908; d. Melbourne, Vic, 27 June 1989). Anglican bishop, missionary. Stanway grew up in the Wimmera district of western Victoria, and left school when 14 years old. He found work in Melbourne, trained as an accountant, and at the age of 20, held a responsible position with a publishing company. This background, allied with an uncommon flair for figures and finance, was to stand him in good stead throughout his life. But he had little knowledge and no experience of the grace of God until 29 July 1928. At the Evening Service in the parish church of Fairfield on 29 July, he heard the Rev C H Nash (q.v.) preach a sermon which led to his conversion. Within two years he made up his mind to become a missionary and began night studies in order to matriculate. He entered Ridley College in March 1932 to prepare for ordination undertaking week-end duties as a catechist at Deer Park and St Albans. He joined the CMS League of Youth, became chairman, and gathered a fine band of young people many of whom were to become missionaries. He was closely involved with the Belgrave Heights Convention (then at Upwey) and established a League of Youth camp on the site. All his energies were thrown into the task of building up its members in personal holiness and vigorous evangelism. Stanway was ordained in St Paul's Cathedral, Melbourne on St Thomas Day 1934 and was placed in charge of the Old Mission Church of St James and St John, Melbourne. The duties were light enough to allow him to enrol in the Melbourne Teachers College and to complete the Diploma in Teaching. On 26 January 1937, he sailed for Africa to become a missionary in the Anglican Diocese of Mombasa, which at that time embraced the whole of Kenya. He was sent to the hot coastal town of Kaloleni as principal of a Secondary Boys School. Before he left Melbourne, he had become engaged to Marjory Harrison: she followed him to Africa and their marriage took place in Mombasa Cathedral in June 1939. He remained at Kaloleni until 1944 when he was transferred to the inland station of Maseno where all his gifts were to be deployed as rural dean of Nyanza. His oversight of some 500 village churches as well as a widespread primary school system was so efficient that in 1948 he was appointed archdeacon of Kenya with his home and office in Nairobi. As secretary of the African Church Council and of the African Education Board, he was responsible for all African work in the diocese. His contacts with government ministers and public servants were of first class significance at the time when the cry of Uhuru and the demand for independence was travelling throughout the colonial world. On 2 Feb 1951, Alfred Stanway was consecrated in Westminster Abbey as the third Anglican Bp of Central Tanganyika. This Diocese was the special sphere of the CMS Australia, and he already knew most of the missionary personnel. He brought with him the understanding and experience of one who had fully shared the lot and problems of a district missionary, but he came to the diocese at a time when it had yet to recover from its losses in personnel and finance as a result of the war. His immediate task was to provide the impetus of fresh leadership and a long-term overall policy. His aim from-the outset was to build up a strong autonomous church with its own indigenous pastorate. With the whole-hearted confidence of the home base, he was able to enlist the service of new missionaries. He saw a great increase in the number of African clergy and he encouraged village evangelists to open new fields of work. Simple structures were built as new churches at the rate of two a week, week in and week out, year by year. He worked hard to meet the need for Christian literature, bookshops, adult literacy and theological training. He opened Bible schools for village evangelists and sent suitable clergy overseas for further studies. He encouraged initiative in others, helped them to find and use their talents, and gave them his unstinted confidence and support. Fresh finance was required for new ventures. This led him to travel widely in Germany and America, where he raised large funds for these projects. Mackay House was built in Dodoma as the central administrative base for the diocese, hospitals such as those at Mvumi and Hombolo were modernised or established, schools were built and upgraded. In keeping with his vision for ultimate leadership by African personnel, he consecrated Yohana Omari in 1955 as his assistant, he was the first national to become a bp in East Africa. Bp Stanway then set on foot the long and complicated process for the division of his sprawling diocese. In 1963, the diocese of Victoria Nyanza came into being; in 1965, that of Morogoro; in 1966, that of Western Tanganyika. Yet in 1971, his own diocese of Central Tanganyika, though greatly reduced in size, had more churches and more clergy than in its undivided state in 195 l. Stanway then played a leading part in the formation of the Province of Tanzania in 1970, with an African abp as metropolitan. A year later, after 35 years in East Africa and 20 years as bishop of Central Tanganyika, he resigned. His leadership and achievements throughout those years had placed him in the front rank as a great missionary statesman. Stanway had returned to Melbourne at the time when his resignation took effect in August 1971. His early love for Ridley College reasserted itself and he went into residence as deputy principal under the Rev Dr Leon Morris. He was put in charge of chapel worship and the pastoral oversight of the students. All his gifts and experience were called into play as he sought to guide and encourage those who were on the threshold of their ministry. The whole bent of his heart was to foster the spiritual life and missionary calling of those whose hearts the Lord had touched. It was during those years that his life-long zeal for the spread of the gospel through Christian literature had its ultimate flowering. It had begun in his Nairobi days with a small church bookstall, this had developed into a major book-shop in the heart of the city. Then in Dodoma he had established the Central Tanganyika Press in order to promote the publication and distribution of Christian literature at all levels. He had marked out Kevin Engel, trained him, and launched him on the international scene. Hence it was natural that in Melbourne he and Kevin Engel should found the Australian Christian Literature Society. But his time at Ridley College was not to last. Unknown to him, the Rev J R W Stott had put his name forward as that of a person who could head a new school of theology in the United States to provide a sound training for evangelical ordinands. Such a task would have been formidable enough for a younger man who had grown up in America. How could an Australian who had spent half his life in Africa hope to succeed in a venture of that kind in America? How could one who had been a missionary, not a theologian, found a new school to train men for ordination? Nevertheless he rose to the challenge. In Sept 1975, he and Mrs Stanway left Melbourne for Sewickly, an outer suburb of Pittsburg, with the promise of three years' service. He had to start from scratch. He found a house to live in, but there was no land for the school, no funds in hand, no staff yet appointed, no students, and no buildings. His drive, his infections enthusiasm, and his flair for practical enterprise carried the day. One by one, obstacles were overcome and support grew in volume and strength. Twelve months after his arrival, in Sept 1976, the Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry was opened with three staff members, seventeen students, and the goodwill of the whole American Episcopal Church to win. During the next two years, the school took shape and was firmly established. Bp Stanway left an indelible stamp on every aspect of its life and work, its spiritual tone and ideals, its financial and administrative principles. He had inspired widespread support among evangelical episcopalians and had imparted a strong sense of divine guidance and purpose. The council would gladly have extended his term in office beyond three years, but at 75 years of age he knew that his health had begun to fail. When he finally relinquished his office in Nov 1978, he could look back on those three years as the crown of his ministry. It is not too much to say that his name was even more highly honoured and revered in the Trinity School of Ministry than in his own dearly loved Africa. His return to Melbourne led to quiet retirement at Mount Waverley where he settled down to a long battle with the ever worsening effects of Parkinson's Disease. The slow loss of physical capacity and the ultimate failure in powers of speech were a great trial, but he never complained. His faith was summed up in his brief reply when he was asked why he had not prayed for healing: 'What God allows, I accept'. That acceptance was without reserve; his testimony was never brighter. His mental powers were undiminished and his spiritual concerns were as wide as ever. He kept in touch with CMS, he went to church, he met with missionaries, he led Bible studies in his home as long as he was able. Africa was always in his heart, news from Sewickly always gave him great pleasure. He had left a mark for God on three great continents and his death left sad but thankful hearts in them all. It was the close of a life in which he had felt that he could never do enough for God who had done so much for him. One of Bp Stanway's sayings was 'when the Holy Spirit takes hold of you, anything can happen'. So it was in his case. He was very human, with his full share of human foibles and frailties. He had a great zest for life and an endless fund of stories drawn from his own experience. He was himself the subject of many stories, some true, others legendary. His vibrant personality always seemed to fill the house where he was, his presence could not be overlooked. His own home was one in which Mrs Stanway had a paramount influence. She was a trained teacher, a skilled artist, a born hostess and a first-class linguist. They had no children of their own, but were devoted Godparents and always deeply interested in the children of missionaries. Home life allowed him to relax in a serene and contented atmosphere and to exercise his gifts for friendship and hospitality. He was always on the watch for souls, a person-to-person evangelist par excellence. He was a man of faith and prayer who dared to believe in the God of the impossible. His love for Africa, his total dedication as a missionary; his gifts as a soulwinner; his genius for finance; his shrewd practical initiatives, and his statesmanlike vision were outstanding characteristics. But great or small, all his gifts were laid out in the service of the gospel, and that service marked him out as one of the most remarkable Australian missionaries of his generation. Alex Kilgour was for many years an active elder and layman in the Presbyterian and then Uniting Church. He was involved in many committees at Synod level for many years. He was a Moderator of the Synod of Victoria of the UCA—one of the first laypeople to take on the role in the early years of the UCA.
