Born in Ireland 1864, Daniel Mannix entered into the Catholic Church and in 1917, he became the Archbishop of Melbourne. Dedicated to the community and its issues, he was known to have spoken against conscription. Renderings of stained west end sanctuary and side altar glass windows within traceries for St Patrick's Cathedral Ballarat. The stained glass was designed by James Bentley and manufactured by Clayton and Bell Londond. Installed in 1880 these windows and the sanctuary tiles are the only example of Bentley's artwork outside the British Isles.Only known plans with specifications of Ballarat's St Patrick's Catholic Cathedral major windows. Measurements of glazed portions for stained glass within the traceries. Stamped with the architect's stamp in strap roundel centred with "Architects Melbourne" the firm's name "Tappin Gilbert & Dennehy".

One of a series of bookmarks in support of the exhibition 'Building a Cathedral' at the Ballarat Catholic Archives in 2025. This image depicts a sanctuary tile by John Francis Bentley that together with the grand chancel window, the Lady Chapel and Blessed Sacrament stained glass windows are Bentley's only known work outside the UK. Bentley's greatest work was Westminster Cathedral.St Patrick's Cathedral Ballarat was the first Catholic Cathedral to be consecrated in Australia in 1891. The tiles as represented in this bookmark together with three John Francis Bentley windows were installed a year earlier for that occasion and are the only example of this artist/architect's work outside of the UK.
