Sunnyside Cash Store was located on the corner of High Street and Wilson Streets Wodonga. It was built and operated by Bill and Ethel Elkington about 1947. The building is in Art Deco style with an awning, verandah and rendered brick parapet behind which was a pitched roof. The shop front originally featured black tile surrounds which have since been removed. The Ice Cream Cone at the front of the building was unfortunately stolen. Apart from a brief period in the early 2000s, the premises has operated as a corner store or café continuously since it was built. Little River (Lone Pine) Store at Killara was built in late 1920s by Harold Harris. Harold and his mother Emily Harris nee Farrell owned Killara Station. He had served at Lone Pine during World War 1 so named the area in honour of that field of battle. Bill Hart added a lubritorium or service station in the late 1950s. It was then also a general store and sub agency for Bank of NSW and also served as a post office. Mrs Hart also operated a small telephone exchange. In 1974 it was for put up for sale for $39,000 plus SAV. It was eventually acquired by Albury Wodonga Development Corporation in about1980. A bid to retain the name Lone Pine as a locality failed. In this undated drawing, believed to have been done in 1925, an existing bluestone store was extended out into the courtyard area. The extensions were on the south and west elevations, and the drawing includes a floor plan of these areas. Postcards began to be produced in Victoria from 1876. Between 1900 and 1920, picture postcards in Australia became an incredibly popular phenomenon. People could cheaply and easily send messages, without the formality of a letter, and they provided a cheap form of souvenir. Eventually, every event of significance was commemorated in some way with a postcard, and this led to the development of a ‘picture on one side and a message/stamp on the other’ postcard we are familiar with today. They were also a popular form of advertising. Sepia toned photographic postcard featuring the Seaford Station Store which offered confectionary, tea and refreshment rooms, fruit, vegetables, ice cream, cool drinks and more. The Denny Lascelles Wool Warehouse was the first building in Victorian planned to facilitate storage, inspection and marketing of wool in one operation, and upon completion was the second largest store in the colony. CJ Denny's was largely responsible for establishment and development of the wool marketing industry in Geelong and is a figure of significance in the history of settlement in Geelong. The store is understood to have been first owned by the Treloar and Nicholls families before being purchased by J. H. Morgan (father of H. R.. Morgan) in the early 1900s.Black and white copy of original photograph which shows the general store run by three generations of the Morgan family when it was being managed by H. R. Morgan (between 1930 and 1956). The photograph shows a store with large windows, a square parapet, and a verandah which is supported by four posts. Historically significant. This shows who the families of the Kiewa Valley were and what type of things they purchased. This would be the only register for this store in 1906.It gives a good historical record of what families purchased during this period and how much they could spend. The first photograph was taken prior to 1910. The location is at the corner of Centre and Jasper Roads, East Brighton, (now known as Bentleigh). It is an early view of John L. and "Minnie" Smith's Hay and Corn Store, situated on the South West corner of those two roads. The first photo was taken prior to the introduction of electricity in the area. A gas lamp and horse "hitching post" can be seen "in shot". There are several loaded wagons waiting in line to have their hay milled to chaff. Farmers came from places as distant as Carrum to have their loads of hay milled into chaff. John Smith was born in 1860 in Point Nepean Road, Brighton, and Minnie was born in Patterson Road, Moorabbin, in a wattle and daub cottage with earthen floor and butter muslin over the windows. The couple married in 1884, Minnie was a devout Methodist and the family became very involved in the development of the local Methodist church. The couple had four children and during the 1890s Depression their first child died, they lost all their possessions, and John's family struggled to survive. Finally in the late 1890s JL Smith was able to rent a shed from Mr Henry Box on the corner of Centre and Jasper Roads, and he later purchased that property. With the gradual improvement in the economy, and the development of the successful market gardening industry in the Shire of Moorabbin, JL Smith's produce store became quite prosperous. Over some years the little "shed" developed into a thriving Hay and Corn Store. JL Smith went on to become Moorabbin Shire President in 1914. He and his wife were active in assisting soldiers returning injured from the 1st WW, in the local Methodist Church and other early community projects. Smith was a typical example of the majority of the early settlers in the Shire of Moorabbin, being god-fearing and devoted to the idea of service to the community. The photographs demonstrate the primitive conditions and early development of what is now a bustling and well-recognised area of Bentleigh, (known as east Brighton before 1907). The photo shows a gas lamp in use before the introduction of electricity in 1916. The Smith's story is representative of the many early pioneering traders, who elected to "set up shop", who suffered the adversity of the 1890s depression, but who survived and made their living in the largely undeveloped area of East Brighton ( now Bentleigh) district. Two black and white early photographs both of the same location. The photos are of the corner of Centre and Jasper Roads, Bentleigh. (Prior to 1907 this area was known as East Brighton.) Both photos show J.L Smith's General Merchant Produce store. "Steam Chaff Cutting and Corn Crushing Mills" and the surrounding area at differing stages. In the first photo taken prior to 1910, we can see there are several horse-drawn carts loaded with hay waiting to be milled, a gas lamp and a horse "hitching post". The store is just a single unadorned, shed. The later, second photo of the same area, shows improvements and the further development of that site. James and Caroline McBride built the store when their small "tack on" room at the side of "Fernholme Guest house" became too small. The Knight's, who had a general store in Gembrook, later bought it and put his sister and brother in law, Tom and Mary Fairbridge, in as managers and was run as a sub branch of the Gembrook store. This store in Main Street Bacchus Marsh was first opened by James Young in November 1866. In October 1869 it was purchased by William Anderson and was operated by members of the Anderson family until 1971. The site of the store was on the southern side of Main Street on the eastern side of Eddie Toole Park. On the opposite side of the street was the site of the former Post Office on the northern side of Main Street. The store was first named the Border Mills Store during James Young's ownership and was later known as the Border Store (Anderson & Co.).Small black and white photograph showing Anderson’s store. Len and Merle Pilkington came to Wodonga from Wonthaggi in 1946. Len had been an employee on the Victorian railways. They both gained employment with J. Mann & Son of Wodonga where Len became manager of the Shoe Department. When the Sumsion’s shoe shop became available Len and Merle bought it in partnership with Ernie Mann. The partnership dissolved a year later and Len and Merle continued as Pilkington’s Shoes. In the 1950s, the shoe repair shop belonging to Nick Hauser was up for sale and Len and Merle extended their business. In the mid-1950s they were joined by their son Barry who continued to work there in a variety of roles including shoe repairer, salesman and accountant. Over the life of Pilkington’s Shoes they operated from two different locations in High Street, Wodonga. At one stage the business provided a living for six staff, but the impact of the recession of 1982 – 83, competition from chain store discount prices and a reduced demand for high quality shoes took their toll on the business and Barry Pilkington closed his doors in 1993 after several decades serving the Wodonga community. This Calendar promoted “Paddle” shoes. Paddle Bros. Shoes Pty. Ltd. was started by Joe Paddle and his seven sons, from a small shed in Carlton. Paddle then moved to a factory in Fitzroy and later in Mornington and Ballarat. In 1982 Paddle Bros. Shoes Pty. Ltd. was purchased by Rivers (Australia) Pty. Ltd. Identified by inscription on the back of the photograph as "Early Pitfield", and the buildings as "Matthew Hamilton Baird's . . . hotel & store". Information from Joan Hunt (see 'Pitfield/Kaleno' file) says the Emu Inn or Pitfield Hotel was at Pitfield/Wardy Yallock township on the road from Skipton to Geelong. Part of this area - foreground, to the left, was called "Buncle's Flat", named after John Buncle, a carpenter who lived in a cottage there with his family. An early timber inn on the Wardy Yallock Creek was owned first by Peter Hardie and then by Edward Langhorne/John McNamara in the 1840s and a mail run from Geelong was established to it in 1846. Matthew Hamilton Baird was the lessee or owner from 1852, and Benjamin Fernald from about 1860. In 1853, the nearby store, at that time owned by William Whitecross, caught fire. The fire spread to the hotel and both buildings were destroyed.
