Ferdinand von Mueller was an examiner of botany at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) between 1880 and 1888. During that era he was active in donating related items to the School. When the Ballarat School of Mines Council agreed to introduce pharmacy and botany classes in 1879, it was apparent students would require access to botanical specimens in order to further their studies. Council members, who were inspired by the work of Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, authorised development of an area along the School's northern boundary, fronting Lydiard Street South, and oversaw the establishment of the new Botanical Gardens. Baron von Mueller took a practical role the development of SMB's Botanical Gardens from the beginning. He became a generous benefactor who 'donated collections of seeds and leguminous fodder plants, including valued grasses of interest and use to agriculturalists and graziers generally' to SMB over many years. History of the Ballarat Teachers, College as outlined on page 9 of the handbook. Ballarat Teachers' College was opened on may 4th, 1926, at Dana Street State School (no 33), with an enrollment of sixty-one students, its original staff consisted of the Principal, Mr W. H. Ellwood, M.A., M.Ed. (Chairman of the Teachers' tribunal from its inception in 1946 until 1954), Miss A. Bouchier, B.A., and Mr A.B. Jones, B.A. (lecturers). In 1927 Miss P.A. Hamano joined the staff. Teaching practice and special rural school work were carried on in schools in or near Ballarat - drawing, crafts and singing were taught by local teachers. In 1927 the college moved to the former Ballarat East Town Hall (remodelled for their use) in Barkly Street. During 1927 the numbers in the College were augmented by twenty-six Manual arts students who had formerly received their training at Ballarat High School. Manual Arts students continued until 1930, when, on grounds of economy, their training was concentrated at Melbourne Teachers' College. During the four succeeding years approximately sixty students annually entered the primary course. Inclusive of Manual Arts students, and private fee-paying students, exactly 400 trainees passed through the college in its brief span of life (1926-1931) Fourteen years were to pass before they were again opened to students on February 2nd, 1946. The college was re-commenced at S.S. Dana Street under the guidance of Mr W.F. Lord, M.C., M.M., B.A., Dip.Ed., (Acting Principal 1946-1950), and a staff consisting of Miss E.B. Hughes, B.A., Dip. Ed., Mr C.B. Bryan, B.A., V.Com., Dip.Ed., Miss M.H. Miller, L.Mus.A., and Miss G. Kentish, Dip.Phys.Ed. The opening ceremony was performed by the Minister for education at that time, the Hon. F. Field, M.L.A., accompanied by the Hon. T.T. Hollway, M.L.A., and the then Director of Education, Mr J.A. Seitz. It was originally intended to cater for women students only (for whom 130 Victoria Street was purchased as a hostel) but, at the last moment, men were also accepted. A co-educational college was thus set up instead, and has continued as such. The original Staff has been considerable augmented, and the number of Students has been more than trebled. 1951 saw the introduction of the two-year course, successful students being presented with the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate at the final College assembly each year. In December, 1855, College held its first Graduation Ceremony, with its own graduation hymn, the words of which were written by Miss C.M. (Mavis) Canty of the staff. Mr Ellwood, former Principal, delivered the occasional address and presented the Ellwood Prize to the outstanding student of the year (Mr C.P. Handreck). Students who had successfully completed the course received their certificates from Mr E.B. Pederick, Chief Inspector of Primary Schools. College accomodation having been strained for several years, it was pleasant news when tenders were called in July, 1956, for the building of the first section of the new Ballarat Teachers' College in Gillies Street, near the Botanical Gardens. At the beginning of 1958 the new College was occupied, and staff and students have appreciated greatly the appointements and cacilities of the new building. In 1968 the three-year Diploma Course began, co-existent with the other courses which will continue during the transitional period. Successful students in the course receive the Diploma of teaching (Primary). Orange and black soft covered booklet with a childlike image of a woman on the cover. The Beauglehole Collection is held in the FedUni Science Herbarium (Mt Helen Y Building). Cliff Beauglehole (1920-2002) was an orchardist at Portland, Victoria. Over his lifetime he collected over 90,000 plant specimens as part of a comprehensice study of Victoria's plans, and wrote thirteen books under the title "The Distribution and Conservation of Vascular Plants in Victoria. Originally held by the Ballarat Field Naturalists Club, this set of herbarium specimens are from Cliff Beauglehole's collections in the Ballarat area. The club decided to hand over the plant collection to the University of Ballarat (now Federation University). They were freeze-dried to kill unwanted insects and are now house in a climate conrolled room, and available to students, staff and others for scientific study. Nornie GUDE (1915-2002) Eleanor Constance (Nornie) Gude was the daughter of Walter Gude, a leading musician, and highly regarded teacher. She grew up in Ballarat and was educated at Loreto College. From 1931 to 1936 Nornie Gude attended the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. She was accepted into the School at the age of 15 because she was so advanced in painting. Nornie Gude studied at Ballarat for five years before progressing to Melbourne’s National Gallery of Victoria School. In 1936 Nornie Gude was studying at the Ballarat Technical Art School, and the National Gallery Drawing School in Melbourne. She won many art competitions, including first prize at the 1936 Melbourne Royal Agricultural Show for still life drawing, and in 1941 became the first woman to win the National Gallery Students Travelling Scholarship. In the 1936 Ballarat School of Mines Annual Report it was stated: "It is my pleasure to report a most successful year in the Technical Art School. I the Annual Poster Competition for Technical Schools, organised by Wiltshires Pty Limited, 16 prized valued at 33 pounds 8 shillings - out of 23 prizes valued at 56 pounds - were won by our students. As an artist Nornie Gude held no theories and was once heard to say, “You spend your first 20 years learning technique and the next 20 years losing it”. Victor GREENHALGH (1900-1982) Born Ballarat, Victoria Edward Gough Whitlam was born in Kew. In 1972 he became the first Australian Labor Party Prime Minister in 23 years, and served as Prime Minister until 1975 when the Governor-General dismissed the government. Victor Greenhalgh was born and educated in Ballarat. He was a student, then a staff member of the Ballarat School of Mines Technical Art School. Greenhalgh was appointed head of the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology's Att School in 1955. He died in 1983. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Victor GREENHALGH (1900-1982) Born Ballarat, Victoria John Grey Gorton served as Prime Minister from 1968 to 1971. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Australia, and alienated many with his unorthodox style of leadership. In 1971 a party vote on a motion of confidence in his leadership was evenly split and Gorton resigned. Victor Greenhalgh was born and educated in Ballarat. Artist's Statement: I spent time visiting the barracks, museums, libraries, gaining information, making special pencil drawings and colour notes, when and where possible. Preparatory drawings for larger paintings were always on detail paper. The reason for this was I could use both sides, correfting mistakes on either side, until a satisfactory end. I use this procedure so that the surface of the painting paper was not effected by erasion. The final drawing was traced on having rubbed a stick of charcoal on the detail paper. I have used this procedure from my early days as a commercial artist. In drawing each horseman fully and tracing each horseman fuly in his place in relation to the whole and rubbibg out the parts covered by the nearer objects. Such essential things as legs and shadows are sure to be in the right place. Most of the pencil drawings of the palace gates, and other features I needed had to be made from a standing position. all these were filed for future reference. Everything had to be in the right proportion to the palace gates. The procedure for the Escort is as follows: If the Life Guards mount the escort an officer of the Blues rides at the right of the coach by invitation. The Guards officer rides on the left. Then follows the Standard flanked by a commissioned officer on the right. The trumpeter on the left. The trumpeter rides on a white horse. He has a selection of twelve different uniforms. After that follows the unit. The stirrups used by the officers are squarish. The troopers stirrups are a conventional form. All personnel riding and on no account rise in the stirrups as normally they would at the trot. This modifies the ragged impression of heads bobbing up haphazardly - their behinds become acclimatized in time." Gift of the Artist, 1981. Allan BERNALDO (05 August 1898-25 June 1988) Born Creswick, Victoria Allan Bernaldo won a scholarship to the Ballarat School of Mines to study Architecture. He received a certificate of merit in 1917, and the Ballarat School of Mines President's medal for the most meritorious Art student. Allan Bernaldo was editor of the Ballarat School of Mines Magazine in 1918. He became known as a commercial artist, teacher and water-colourist who specialiesd in horses and flowers. He died at St. Ronan’s Nursing Home in Armadale, Victoria and was buried at Springvale Botanical Cemetery, with his wife Florence Victoria May Elliott, who predeceased him in 1966.
