Sunbury Secondary College was established in 1959 and was built on the site of the former rabbit canning factory on the corner of Riddell and Racecourse Roads. The Rabbit Canning Factory was established on land that was part of the Rupertswood estate, near the present site of Sunbury Secondary College. 'Rupertswood' mansion, in Sunbury, was the former home of Sir Rupert Clarke. His original estate covered 137317 acres in various areas in the district of Bourke in the 1880s. The 'Rupertwood' property was eventually acquired by the Salesian Order and functioned as a boys' school where many were trained in farming skills. In the 1990s it became a coeducational secondary college. The Clarke family acquired and settled much land in the Sunbury area and today 'Rupertswood' Mansion is one of the surviving grand nineteenth century mansions in Victoria. The Catholic Church has also played a prominent role in educating many of the young people in the district. In the mid 1980s the names of all government schools were changed. The title for schools from Prep to Grade 6 changed from state school to primary school and former high schools, with a few exceptions, became known as secondary colleges. Rupertswood Mansion was the Sunbury residence of the Clarke family from 1874 until 1922 when H.V.McKay of Sunshine Harvester fame bought it from Hon. W.L. Russell Clarke in 1922. After the death of H.V.McKay in 1926, it was purchased by W. Naughton who then sold the mansion and 700 acres of land to the Salesian Fathers, who are the present owners. The mansion in the photograph is Rupertswood, in Sunbury, which William Clarke built in 1874 - 76 on land that he had purchased in 1840.Since Rupertswood Mansion was built it has been the venue a variety of events and owners as well as the Clarke family.
