Over the next few years, the school expanded its subjects to teaching commercial and science subjects. In 1915 the school was opened for girls to attend to learn shorthand and typewriting. To separate the boys from the girls the science lab was partitioned off. By 1992 and with amalgamation and restructure of six schools, the Sunshine Technical School was renamed as the Sunshine College and operated four campuses, three junior campuses for years 7-10 in Ardeer, North Sunshine and West Sunshine and the senior campus in Graham St caters for Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) for years 11 & 12. The College also runs the Harvester Technical College in North Sunshine (opened 2014) which brings the purpose of the school a full circle back to H.V. McKay's original vision of a technical school. in 2020 the site was closed, and the students were relocated to the College's Lachlan Road (former Sunshine West High) and Northumberland Road (former Sunshine North Technical) campuses.Audio tape This audio tape has been digitised. ... Sunshine and District Historical Society Incorporated The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre, 775 Ballarat Road, Deer Park 3023. Brimbank Library, 301 Hampshire Road, Sunshine 3020. melbourne In 1948 during her Australian tour Helen Keller visited the west suburban SUNSHINE GIRLS TECHNICAL SCHOOL, to express her thanks for a letter written by the students in support of her work with deaf and blind people. ...In 1948 during her Australian tour Helen Keller visited the west suburban SUNSHINE GIRLS TECHNICAL SCHOOL, to express her thanks for a letter written by the students in support of her work with deaf and blind people. She and her travelling companions presented the school with their signatures. Helen Keller was born on June 27, 1880 and due to an illness at the age of 20 months lost both her sight and hearing. Helen was taught to communicate by Anne Sullivan who wrote words into her hand, and she also learned to speak by touching the throat and lips of people as they spoke. In June 28, 1904 Helen Keller graduated from Radcliffe College with a Bachelor of Arts degree, being the first deaf and blind person to do so. In October 1914 Polly Thomson joined up with Helen and Anne. Helen published an account of her religious beliefs and an autobiography, and in 1930 the three women travelled to Scotland, England and Ireland. In 1931 they participated in the first World Council for the Blind. After Anne Sullivan Macy died in 1936 Helen and Polly continued to travel to several countries. In 1943 Helen visited blind, deaf, and disabled soldiers in a USA military hospital, which she described as "the crowning experience of my life". In 1946 Helen and Polly made their first world tour for the American Foundation for the Overseas Blind and over the next 11 years visited 35 countries. In 1955 Helen became the first woman to be honoured with an honorary degree from Harvard University. In 1960 Polly Thomson died, and in 1961 Helen suffered her first stroke and so retired from public life. In 1964 President Johnson conferred the Presidential Medal of Freedom however she was unable to attend the ceremony. On June 1, 1968 Helen died in her sleep, and her ashes have been interred with those of Anne and Polly at the National Cathedral. Over 1200 mourners attended the funeral. It is significant that Helen Keller actually took the time and effort to visit the Sunshine Girls Technical School to thank the students for their supporting letter. Helen Keller's many achievements show that a severely handicapped deaf and blind person can make significant contributions to society, if they apply themselves and receive assistance from dedicated friends. It was a foundational part of Victoria’s early technical education system and was closely tied to the industrial growth of Sunshine and the legacy of H.V. McKay’s Harvester Works. - Opened: 7 July 1913, following H.V. McKay’s donation of £2,000 and 4.5 acres on Derby Road. - Facilities: The school featured a timber administration building with six classrooms and a large, galvanized iron workshop specifically built for trade apprentices. - Purpose: Designed to train apprentices for McKay’s Sunshine Harvester Works, reflecting the industrial needs of the time. - Initial Enrollment: 70 students, including 44 apprentices from the Harvester Works.Workshop Significance - The workshop was central to the school’s mission: “mente et manibus” — “with mind and with hands.” - It provided hands-on training in mechanical and industrial trades, aligning with the Education Act 1910’s push for secondary technical education. - This made Sunshine one of the first three technical schools established under the Act, and the longest-running of them, operating until 1991. ... On 15 January 2024, the Executive Director made a recommendation (‘the Recommendation’) to the Heritage Council, pursuant to Part 3, Division 3 of the Heritage Act 2017 (‘the Act’), that the Former Sunshine Technical College, at 111 and 129–133 Derby Road, Sunshine (‘the Place’), is not of State-level cultural heritage significance and should not be included in the Victorian Heritage Register (‘the Heritage Register’), pursuant to section 49(1)(b) of the Act. After considering the Executive Director’s recommendation and all submissions received, and after conducting a hearing, the Heritage Council has determined, pursuant to section 49(1)(a) of the Heritage Act 2017, that the Former Sunshine Technical College located at 111 and 129–133 Derby Road, Sunshine, Brimbank City is of State-level cultural heritage significance and is to be included in the Victorian Heritage Register in the category of Registered Place. The Heritage Council has determined to include as the extent of registration the area that was the subject of a nomination accepted by the Executive Director, and has determined, pursuant to section 49(3) of the Heritage Act 2017, to include categories of works or activities which may be carried out in relation to the place, for which a permit is not required (permit exemptions). The significance of this successful appeal was a major win for local heritage advocates (including the Sunshine & District Historical Society, RHSV, and Brimbank Council), who argued that the school’s story is inseparable from Sunshine’s identity. As the site had been under threat, with earlier proposals to demolish the buildings, this determination now gives the site strong legal protection. Developers and government agencies must now work within the heritage permit system, ensuring conservation of key buildings.Heritage Council Victoria Heritage Council Regulatory Committee Former Sunshine Technical College (H2458) 111 and 129–133 Derby Road, Sunshine, Brimbank City, Wurundjeri Country Hearing – 21 and 22 October 2024 Members – Dr Ursula de Jong (Chair), Ms Anna Foley, Dr Janine Majorsunshine technical school, sunshine technical college, sunshine secondary college -
