This photograph, taken by The Advocate, shows Ron Edwards, President of the Sunshine RSL, holding a memorial dedicated to Walter “Wally” Peeler, Victoria Cross recipient and former Sunshine Harvester Factory worker, and local resident.Walter “Wally” Peeler (1887–1968) was a Victorian soldier and one of Australia’s most highly decorated servicemen. Born at Barkers Creek near Castlemaine, he worked locally before enlisting in the First World War in 1916. Serving with the 3rd Pioneer Battalion, he earned the Victoria Cross for exceptional bravery at Broodseinde Ridge in October 1917, where he led assaults on multiple German machine‑gun posts. After the war, Peeler returned to Victoria and later worked at Sunshine Harvester Works, linking him directly to the industrial heritage of Melbourne’s western suburbs. He re‑enlisted during the Second World War, served in the Middle East and Java, and endured years as a prisoner of war under Japanese captivity. From 1934 to 1964, Peeler served as a long‑standing Custodian of the Shrine of Remembrance, becoming a familiar figure in Victoria’s commemorative life. He died in 1968 and is remembered through numerous memorials, including at the Australian War Memorial and in his home district around Castlemaine.Ron Edwards & Wally Peeler Memorial Sunshine RSLsunshine rsl, dickson street, sunshine, walter peeler, ron edwards

The Sunshine RSL Memorial Bowling Club emerged as the bowls arm of the Sunshine Returned Services League, functioning as a social, recreational, and commemorative space for veterans and the wider community. It developed separately from the older Sunshine Bowling Club and became a long‑standing post‑war community institution in its own right. The Sunshine RSL fire was a major incident that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 5 March 2026, causing extensive damage to one of Sunshine’s key community institutions. Firefighters were called to the Dickson Street premises at 5:14am and found the rear section, the kitchen and bowling club room fully ablaze. The blaze was brought under control by 6:37am. The kitchen, bowling room and poker room were destroyed and minor heat and debris damaged to the bowling greens. Some bowling memorabilia was lost, though most military memorabilia were not stored in the affected area. A few days later, ABC News reported that investigators determined the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion in a clothes dryer, even though the dryer was not operating at the time. The effects of the fire to the Sunshine community were emotional, social, cultural, and practical. The club was a key meeting point for hundreds of people.5351.01 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 01.jpg 5351.02 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 02.jpg 5351.03 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 03.jpg 5351.04 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 04.jpg 5351.05 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 05.jpg 5351.06 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 06.jpg 5351.07 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 07.jpg 5351.08 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 08.jpg 5351.09 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 09.jpg 5351.10 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 10.jpg 5351.11 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 11.jpg 5351.12 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 12.jpg 5351.13 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 13.jpg 5351.14 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 14.jpg 5351.15 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 15.jpg 5351.16 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 16.jpg 5351.17 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 17.jpg 5351.18 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 18.jpg 5351.19 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 19.jpg 5351.20 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 20.jpg 5351.21 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 22.jpg 5351.22 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 - Greens Were Not Damaged Photo 22.jpg 5351.23 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 - Greens Were Not Damaged Photo 23.jpg 5351.24 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 24 - Meeting With Keilor RSL To Discuss Way Forward After Fire.jpg 5351.25 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 25 - Site Cleared 1st April 2026.jpg 5351.26 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 26 - Site Update 9th April 2026.jpg 5351.27 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 27 - Site Update 9th April 2026.jpg 5351.28 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 27 - Site Update 26th May 2026.jpg 5351.29 - Sunshine RSL Fire 5th March 2026 Photo 27 - Site Update 29th May 2026.jpgsunshine r.s.l., dickson street, sunshine, sunshine rsl

These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, record the dedication of the Memorial Gardens at the Sunshine RSL Dickson Street, Sunshine by RAAF Chaplain Wing Commander Peter Davidson from Base Williams, Laverton. The garden features a propeller, a gun, and an anchor, each symbolising one of the three branches of the Australian Armed Services. The propeller is from a RAAF Dakota, the gun is an Ack‑Ack from the Second World War, and the anchor was supplied by the Royal Australian Navy. These gardens are important because they form a physical, symbolic, and ceremonial space honouring all three branches of Australia’s armed services, created and dedicated by the local veteran community, and used as a focal point for remembrance in Sunshine.Anchor, propellor and gun launch in the gardens 99 Dickson Street Sunshine RSL 559.1 6854.01 - Sunshine RSL Dickson Street Sunshine Anchor, Propellor And Gun Launch 1991 Photographs.JPG L - R Bob Brown (Wing Commander No 1 Stores Tottenham), Richard Wright (Sunshine RSL President), Mrs Lucy Heap (Member of the State Executive of the RSL), Peter Davidson (RAAF Chaplain Wing Commander, Base Williams, Laverton) 6854.02 - Sunshine RSL Dickson Street Sunshine Anchor, Propellor And Gun Launch 1991 Photographs.JPG L - R Mrs Lucy Heap (Member of the State Executive of the RSL), Richard Wright (Sunshine RSL President)sunshine rsl, dickson street, sunshine

The Sunshine RSL Memorial Bowling Club emerged as the bowls arm of the Sunshine Returned Services League, functioning as a social, recreational, and commemorative space for veterans and the wider Sunshine community. Unlike the original Sunshine Bowling Club in the McKay Gardens, the RSL club developed post‑WWII, reflecting the growth of Sunshine’s veteran community and the expansion of the RSL’s social facilities. The club’s biggest on‑field success has been its long-term involvement in pennant bowls, the main competitive format in Victoria. Over the decades the club has been successful in winning a number of premiership flags. These photographs at the unveiling of the Division B Premiership Flag for the Season 1988 - 1999.Bowls Premiership Flag Sunshine R.S.L. 180.1sunshine rsl bowling club, sunshine rsl, dickson street, sunshine

ANZAC Day 2021 The Ukrainian Association Sunshine (UAS), joined other community organisations in commemorating ANZAC Day on April 25th 2021. UAS members gathered at the Sunshine RSL cenotaph for the Dawn Service during which, President Andrew Makohon and Oksana Makohon laid a wreath on behalf of the Ukrainian Community. Members and families later gathered at the UAS Hall in Ardeer for a flag raising ceremony and breakfast. Our youngest members took part in raising and then lowering the Australian and Ukrainian flags to half mast, learning about the significance of the ceremony and the importance of Australia’s National Day of Remembrance. Lest We Forget.

This type of wrench or spanner was used as a service tool for H. V. McKay Pty. Ltd. manufactured agricultural machinery. This specific tool belonged to Albert (Bert) Montgomery of 11 Kamarooka St, Albion. Bert Montgomery was born in Sunshine and in 1910 was apprenticed as a carpenter with Sunshine Harvester Works, where he worked as a wood machinist. On 19 August 1914, while still an apprentice, he enlisted in the First AIF. He left McKay's and started business as a builder probably just prior to WW2. After the war he joined the Shire of Braybrook as Assistant Building Surveyor until he retired. In 1962 Bert and his friend Jack Causon (proprietor of an Anderson Road second hand store that previously was Les James grocery) were on a fishing trip to Lake Tooliorook (aka Ettrick) near Lismore, Victoria. Their boat capsized and both fishermen were drowned. Bert was a Past President of Sunshine RSL and at that time it was reported that his funeral was the largest that Sunshine had seen. The information about Bert Montgomery was supplied by a Committee member of the Sunshine & District Historical Society Inc. who spoke to Montgomery's daughter, who also donated the tool. This tool serves as a reminder of the large H. V. McKay agricultural manufacturing works that once existed in Sunshine. The tool is associated with the works, and the design is significant enough for images of the tool to be used in an artistic mural, which is painted on the Eastern Pillar of the new H. V. Two-up is a traditional Australian gambling game played with two coins tossed in the air, and players bet on whether they will land two heads, two tails, or odds (one of each). It’s one of the most iconic pieces of Australian cultural history. Two-up became famous among Australian soldiers in World War I, especially at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. It was simple, portable, and boosted morale. After the war, it became a symbol of mateship and remembrance. Two-up isn’t just a game, it’s a ritual of Mateship, Luck and Chance, Remembering diggers and Community gatherings. Because of this, Two-up is legally allowed to be played in most Australian states on ANZAC Day, even where gambling laws would normally prohibit it.Two‑up has a surprisingly rich little history in Sunshine, Victoria, because of the suburb’s strong links to WWI and WWII service, the RSL, and the old industrial workforce culture where the game stayed alive long after it faded elsewhere. Two-up was played in lunchrooms at the large factories throughout the district, such as at H.V. McKay’s Sunshine Harvester Factory, ICI & Wunderlich. It was played at private gatherings in back sheds, houses, paddocks, behind buildings and hotels around Albion, Braybrook, Matthews Hill, Sunshine & Sunshine North, and informally at the early Sunshine RSL. As the game was illegal, there are many reports in the local papers of places being raided by the police and fines being imposed by the courts on players that were caught playing the game. Many of the local two-up locations are listed in these newspaper's reports.5347.01 - Court Of Petty Sessions - Sunshine Advocate 1st October 1927 Page 5.pdf 5347.02 - Two-Up, Beer-Up And Betting School - Sunshine Advocate 14th February 1936 Page 2.pdf 5347.03 - Two-Up At Ding Sunshine Station Reserve - Sunshine Advocate 15th November 1935 Page 3.pdf 5347.04 - Young Bloods Playing Two-Up - Sunshine Advocate 24th October 1941 Page 1.pdf 5347.05 - Played Two-Up - Sunshine Advocate 1st May 1942 Page 1.pdf 5347.06 - Two-Up Players Fined - Sunshine Advocate 19th June 1942 Page 1.pdf 5347.07 - Alleged Two-Up School - Sunshine Advocate 15th October 1943 Page 1.pdf 5347.08 - Alleged Two-Up School Case Against Occupier Dismissed - Sunshine Advocate 3rd December 1943 Page 3.pdf 5347.09 - Two-Up Players Fined - Sunshine Advocate 19th May 1944 Page 1.pdf 5347.10 - The Police Infiltrated Two Uppers Landed Cold - Sunshine Advocate 22nd September 1944 Page 1.pdf 5347.11 - Hard Swearing In Two-Up Cases - Sunshine Advocate 15th June 1945 Page 1.pdf 5347.12 - Gambols In Paddock To Escape Gambling Police Raid - Sunshine Advocate 24th January 1947 Page 3.pdf 5347.13 - Obstructing Of Police Brings Fine - Sunshine Advocate 14th February 1947 Page 1.pdf 5347.14 - Charge Of Gambling Fails - Sunshine Advocate 21st February 1947 Page 1.pdf 5347.15 - Police Raid House For 'Swy' Game Occupier And Players Fined - Sunshine Advocate 3rd September 1948 Page 1.pdf 5347.16 - Caught Red Handed At Two-Up - Sunshine Advocate 21st October 1949 Page 1.pdf 5347.17 - Two-Up Players Fined - Sunshine Advocate 25th November 1949 Page 1.pdf 5347.18 - Two-up Players Caught - Sunshine Advocate 20th January 1950 Page 4.pdf 5347.19 - Gave Wrong Name To Police Two-Up Player Fined - Sunshine Advocate 17th March 1950 Page 4.pdf 5347.20 - Youth Won't Work - Sunshine Advocate 27th October 1950 Page 1.pdf 5347.21 - Bing Crosby Caught Playing Two-Up - Sunshine Advocate 13th April 1951 Page 1.pdf 5347.22 - Jotting From the Court Two-Up Player Fined - Sunshine Advocate 23rd November 1951 Page 4.pdf 5347.23 - No Claim Expected For This Money - Sunshine Advocate 11th January 1952 Page 1.pdf 5347.24 - Police Distrurb Two-Up Players In House - Sunshine Advocate 2nd July 1954 Page 1.pdf 5347.25 - The History Of Two-Up Schools In Melbourne West - The Westsider 26th April 2026 Page 15.pdf two-up, two up
