This photograph, taken by The Advocate, shows Ron Edwards, President of the Sunshine RSL, holding a memorial dedicated to Walter “Wally” Peeler, Victoria Cross recipient and former Sunshine Harvester Factory worker, and local resident.Walter “Wally” Peeler (1887–1968) was a Victorian soldier and one of Australia’s most highly decorated servicemen. Born at Barkers Creek near Castlemaine, he worked locally before enlisting in the First World War in 1916. Serving with the 3rd Pioneer Battalion, he earned the Victoria Cross for exceptional bravery at Broodseinde Ridge in October 1917, where he led assaults on multiple German machine‑gun posts. After the war, Peeler returned to Victoria and later worked at Sunshine Harvester Works, linking him directly to the industrial heritage of Melbourne’s western suburbs. He re‑enlisted during the Second World War, served in the Middle East and Java, and endured years as a prisoner of war under Japanese captivity. From 1934 to 1964, Peeler served as a long‑standing Custodian of the Shrine of Remembrance, becoming a familiar figure in Victoria’s commemorative life. The Sunshine RSL Memorial Bowling Club emerged as the bowls arm of the Sunshine Returned Services League, functioning as a social, recreational, and commemorative space for veterans and the wider community. It developed separately from the older Sunshine Bowling Club and became a long‑standing post‑war community institution in its own right. The Sunshine RSL fire was a major incident that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 5 March 2026, causing extensive damage to one of Sunshine’s key community institutions. Firefighters were called to the Dickson Street premises at 5:14am and found the rear section, the kitchen and bowling club room fully ablaze. The blaze was brought under control by 6:37am. The kitchen, bowling room and poker room were destroyed and minor heat and debris damaged to the bowling greens. Some bowling memorabilia was lost, though most military memorabilia were not stored in the affected area. A few days later, ABC News reported that investigators determined the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion in a clothes dryer, even though the dryer was not operating at the time.The effects of the fire to the Sunshine community were emotional, social, cultural, and practical. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 1991, record the dedication of the Memorial Gardens at the Sunshine RSL Dickson Street, Sunshine by RAAF Chaplain Wing Commander Peter Davidson from Base Williams, Laverton. The garden features a propeller, a gun, and an anchor, each symbolising one of the three branches of the Australian Armed Services. George Zachary Parnis migrated to Melbourne from Malta in 1964, arriving with his brother Manny. George was 19 years old at the time. The family later became well-established in Melbourne’s western suburbs. George Zachary Parnis became a councillor of the former City of Sunshine (Victoria), active in local government before the council’s amalgamation in 1995. ANZAC Day 2021 The Ukrainian Association Sunshine (UAS), joined other community organisations in commemorating ANZAC Day on April 25th 2021. UAS members gathered at the Sunshine RSL cenotaph for the Dawn Service during which, President Andrew Makohon and Oksana Makohon laid a wreath on behalf of the Ukrainian Community. Members and families later gathered at the UAS Hall in Ardeer for a flag raising ceremony and breakfast. Our youngest members took part in raising and then lowering the Australian and Ukrainian flags to half mast, learning about the significance of the ceremony and the importance of Australia’s National Day of Remembrance. This type of wrench or spanner was used as a service tool for H. V. McKay Pty. Ltd. manufactured agricultural machinery. This specific tool belonged to Albert (Bert) Montgomery of 11 Kamarooka St, Albion. Bert Montgomery was born in Sunshine and in 1910 was apprenticed as a carpenter with Sunshine Harvester Works, where he worked as a wood machinist. On 19 August 1914, while still an apprentice, he enlisted in the First AIF. He left McKay's and started business as a builder probably just prior to WW2. After the war he joined the Shire of Braybrook as Assistant Building Surveyor until he retired. In 1962 Bert and his friend Jack Causon (proprietor of an Anderson Road second hand store that previously was Les James grocery) were on a fishing trip to Lake Tooliorook (aka Ettrick) near Lismore, Victoria. This tool serves as a reminder of the large H. V. McKay agricultural manufacturing works that once existed in Sunshine. Two-up is a traditional Australian gambling game played with two coins tossed in the air, and players bet on whether they will land two heads, two tails, or odds (one of each). It’s one of the most iconic pieces of Australian cultural history. Two-up became famous among Australian soldiers in World War I, especially at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. It was simple, portable, and boosted morale. After the war, it became a symbol of mateship and remembrance. Two-up isn’t just a game, it’s a ritual of Mateship, Luck and Chance, Remembering diggers and Community gatherings. Because of this, Two-up is legally allowed to be played in most Australian states on ANZAC Day, even where gambling laws would normally prohibit it.Two‑up has a surprisingly rich little history in Sunshine, Victoria, because of the suburb’s strong links to WWI and WWII service, the RSL, and the old industrial workforce culture where the game stayed alive long after it faded elsewhere. Two-up was played in lunchrooms at the large factories throughout the district, such as at H.V. McKay’s Sunshine Harvester Factory, ICI & Wunderlich. It was played at private gatherings in back sheds, houses, paddocks, behind buildings and hotels around Albion, Braybrook, Matthews Hill, Sunshine & Sunshine North, and informally at the early Sunshine RSL. As the game was illegal, there are many reports in the local papers of places being raided by the police and fines being imposed by the courts on players that were caught playing the game.
