The Sunshine RSL Memorial Bowling Club emerged as the bowls arm of the Sunshine Returned Services League, functioning as a social, recreational, and commemorative space for veterans and the wider community. It developed separately from the older Sunshine Bowling Club and became a long‑standing post‑war community institution in its own right. The Sunshine RSL fire was a major incident that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 5 March 2026, causing extensive damage to one of Sunshine’s key community institutions. Firefighters were called to the Dickson Street premises at 5:14am and found the rear section, the kitchen and bowling club room fully ablaze. The blaze was brought under control by 6:37am. The kitchen, bowling room and poker room were destroyed and minor heat and debris damaged to the bowling greens. Some bowling memorabilia was lost, though most military memorabilia were not stored in the affected area. A few days later, ABC News reported that investigators determined the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion in a clothes dryer, even though the dryer was not operating at the time.The effects of the fire to the Sunshine community were emotional, social, cultural, and practical. George Zachary Parnis migrated to Melbourne from Malta in 1964, arriving with his brother Manny. George was 19 years old at the time. The family later became well-established in Melbourne’s western suburbs. George Zachary Parnis became a councillor of the former City of Sunshine (Victoria), active in local government before the council’s amalgamation in 1995. He was the Mayor of City of Sunshine for one term 1993 - 1994. This video records Mayor Cr. George Parnis term of being the Mayor of the City of Sunshine. ANZAC Day 2021 The Ukrainian Association Sunshine (UAS), joined other community organisations in commemorating ANZAC Day on April 25th 2021. UAS members gathered at the Sunshine RSL cenotaph for the Dawn Service during which, President Andrew Makohon and Oksana Makohon laid a wreath on behalf of the Ukrainian Community. Members and families later gathered at the UAS Hall in Ardeer for a flag raising ceremony and breakfast. Our youngest members took part in raising and then lowering the Australian and Ukrainian flags to half mast, learning about the significance of the ceremony and the importance of Australia’s National Day of Remembrance. This type of wrench or spanner was used as a service tool for H. V. McKay Pty. Ltd. manufactured agricultural machinery. This specific tool belonged to Albert (Bert) Montgomery of 11 Kamarooka St, Albion. Bert Montgomery was born in Sunshine and in 1910 was apprenticed as a carpenter with Sunshine Harvester Works, where he worked as a wood machinist. On 19 August 1914, while still an apprentice, he enlisted in the First AIF. He left McKay's and started business as a builder probably just prior to WW2. After the war he joined the Shire of Braybrook as Assistant Building Surveyor until he retired. In 1962 Bert and his friend Jack Causon (proprietor of an Anderson Road second hand store that previously was Les James grocery) were on a fishing trip to Lake Tooliorook (aka Ettrick) near Lismore, Victoria. Their boat capsized and both fishermen were drowned. Bert was a Past President of Sunshine RSL and at that time it was reported that his funeral was the largest that Sunshine had seen. The information about Bert Montgomery was supplied by a Committee member of the Sunshine & District Historical Society Inc. who spoke to Montgomery's daughter, who also donated the tool. This tool serves as a reminder of the large H. V. McKay agricultural manufacturing works that once existed in Sunshine. The tool is associated with the works, and the design is significant enough for images of the tool to be used in an artistic mural, which is painted on the Eastern Pillar of the new H. V. this pocket knife is imoportant because it was used by AB Bloggs (Navy Medal) to splice lines on the HMAS Vampire. Donated by daughter Louise. AB Bloggs died from wounds received during sea battle in April 1942 in the South Pacific. Captain Frank Herbert King was born in the Parish of St. Saviors in the borough of Brougham London March 5th 1875. He was educated in theology at St. Augustine's College Durban University. He went on to serve for 2 1/2 years in South Africa during the Boer Wars and then re-enlisted in the A.I.F.16th November 1916 when he listed his address as "The Vicarage Sunshine Victoria" and listed his wife as "Kathleen King" “Revd McCoy announced his intention of moving to the parish of Deniliquin in October 1915. He was replaced by F.H. King. Though the parish could not house him, he came in November. King was a typical “new broom”. In January 1916, at his instigation, the parish agreed to change its hymn book to Ancient and Modern. This decision could be viewed as a “churchmanship” matter, one of many that happened in these years. He pushed through the building of the vicarage, from tender in January to blessed and occupied by June. At the Annual General Meeting, King described 1915 as a trying time in the church and looked forward to a happier and more prosperous time during 1916. At a special vestry meeting, 3 November 1916, King announced that he had accepted an appointment by the Archbishop for service at the front, and that he had been instructed to prepare to go abroad. It was decided in his absence the parish use lay-readers, with periodic visits by clergy for Holy Communion. On 12 November, King thanked the parish for their loyalty and their devotion to him and the church. In return the parish presented him with a wrist watch. The parish was not formally vacant; just without a vicar. In September 1917, the Archbishop wrote advising that King had resigned. He appointed the Rev. W. Green to the parish, but Green declined.”(1) He was sent to Egypt where he administered to the Australian Stationary Hospital Australian 3rd and 5th light horse brigades. His Army record states he was Invalided and Completion of Duty 12 July 1918. He was later awarded th Order of the British Empire (OBE) 1 “The Junction” a history of St Mark’s Sunshine The picture of Chaplain-Captain F.H. King was carried in the Bible of Sig. H. C. Roussac ( a Gallipoli veteran) during his service with the A.I.F. in France. It can only be assumed that F.H.King had a profound effect on Sig. Two-up is a traditional Australian gambling game played with two coins tossed in the air, and players bet on whether they will land two heads, two tails, or odds (one of each). It’s one of the most iconic pieces of Australian cultural history. Two-up became famous among Australian soldiers in World War I, especially at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. It was simple, portable, and boosted morale. After the war, it became a symbol of mateship and remembrance. Two-up isn’t just a game, it’s a ritual of Mateship, Luck and Chance, Remembering diggers and Community gatherings. Because of this, Two-up is legally allowed to be played in most Australian states on ANZAC Day, even where gambling laws would normally prohibit it.Two‑up has a surprisingly rich little history in Sunshine, Victoria, because of the suburb’s strong links to WWI and WWII service, the RSL, and the old industrial workforce culture where the game stayed alive long after it faded elsewhere. Two-up was played in lunchrooms at the large factories throughout the district, such as at H.V. McKay’s Sunshine Harvester Factory, ICI & Wunderlich. It was played at private gatherings in back sheds, houses, paddocks, behind buildings and hotels around Albion, Braybrook, Matthews Hill, Sunshine & Sunshine North, and informally at the early Sunshine RSL. As the game was illegal, there are many reports in the local papers of places being raided by the police and fines being imposed by the courts on players that were caught playing the game. This object relates to Oliver Charles MURPHY. He was born on 1/01/1879 in Lexton, VIC. Oliver Charles served in the Army (6047) enlisting on, 20/03/1916 in Swan Hill, VIC before being discharged from duties with the 5 BATTALION as a Army Non-Commissioned Corporal / Bombardier (CPL/LBDR) on 23/06/1919. Oliver Charles MURPHY was not a prisoner of war. His next of kin is Mrs Sarah Ann MURPHY - Wife.Badge with motif of the Rising Sun, for use on Australian Army slouch hats. Rising Sun includes rays of sunshine in an arch around a crown, below which there is a scroll bearing text. On reverse, two loops are soldered to the badge and a pin is fed through both loops, used for attachment to slouch hat.
