The 2/6th Commando Squadron (Australia) was one of 12 independent companies or commando squadrons raised by the Australian Army during WW2. The 2/6th served in four major campaigns - Kokoda, Buna, Markham-Ramu and Borneo and was involved in the Battle of Kaiapit. Late in the WW2 hostilities 2/6th Commando Squadron was at Balikpapan and attached to 25th Brigade to provide support to the Brigade - reconnaissance patrols, fighting patrols, ambushes and humanitarian assistance to local inhabitants. The 2/6th Commando Squadron was disbanded in 1946. The Sword returned to Australia with a member of 2/6th Commando Squadron VX132826 W G H Burrell. The Book Purple Devils was written by Syd Trigellis Smith in his retirement, he had served during WW2 with 2/2 Field Regiment in New Guinea.VX132826 W G H Burrell served with the AIF during WW2 in New Guinea and posted to 2/6th Commando Squadron and was on Borneo and at Balikpapan. George Burrell was able to being back the sword at the end of hostilities. Two page document recording anecdotes about Melbourne Legacy Presidents, including Bill Cremor, Syd Birrell, Ray Hall and Cyril Smith, written by Ray Hall's successor in 1935, H.G. Brain. According to his account relationships were not always smooth; not only did Hall chair a fractious Board in 1934, but in 1931 insults were hurled during a meeting (by no less than Stan Savige) which resulted in the immediate resignation of the then President Smith, later retracted. Brain himself upset Mildura Legacy when he put forward his view to the Mildura Annual Dinner that 'the returned soldier section of the population was big enough ... to carry its own welfare activities, and that it ought not to pound the general populace too hard.' He had inadvertently broadcast his ideas over the national network, thinking that the microphone was only for local hearing assistance. More amusingly Brain also tells a story about Cremor when he ran against Harold Holt for the the House of Representatives seat of Fawkner 'in 1942 (?)', and one about Birrell showing a group of the Women's Nationalist League (a conservative women's organisation established in 1904 to support the monarchy and empire) members around the Flemington Saleyards. Program includes message by Mayor, Cr. Lex de Man and artwork by Syd Tunn. During the latter part of 2003 all of the historical societies and similar organisations in the Shire of Nillumbik attended a series of combined meetings arranged by Nillumbik Shire Council. The meetings were arranged by the Council's Arts and Cultural Services Co-ordinator and the Community Events Officer. ..The principal outcome of meetings ..to organise a Nillumbik Heritage Week to run from Friday 26th March to Sunday 4th April. The main event will be a combined heritage "expo" from 26th to 28th March, to be held in the Panton Hill Hall. The theme will be "Dirt Farming" which derives from the subsistence farming activities of the early settlers but could be widened to include gold mining, earth building and even modem day bushland regeneration. It fits well with the name "Nillumbik" which in the language of the Wurundjeri meant the not so good country covering most of our area and contrasted with the rich soil of the Kangaroo Grounds which they called Moor-rul. The following weekend each society will arrange their own separate activities. We intend to have open days at our Local History Centre on both days and this will include a display in the adjoining former Eltham Court House.
