To enhance communication between RVIB head office and the various talking newspaper sites around Victoria, a newsletter was established. In 1983 the Swan Hill Guardian became the first Talking Newspaper produced by the RVIB. In the three years since then 18 other rural newspapers followed and in 1986 there was a concerted push to add Melbourne papers to this network. RVIB Auxiliaries raised monies for the organisation at a grassroots level, via a variety of meetings, fundraisers and events. Cyril Hayward came with his wife Joyce to Warrnambool from England in 1955. For 30 years he and his wife were dominant figures in the performing arts organizations in Warrnambool. Cyril Hayward was a leading figure in the Warrnambool Theatre Company as an actor, stage manager, electrician, technician and the person who did any other job that needed to be done. He was a Life Member of the Theatre Company and President of the Warrnambool branch of the Victorian Arts Council, organizer of the weekly talking newspaper for the visually impaired, a tutor for the local Adult Literacy Scheme, a founding member of the Warrnambool Probus Club and was on the building committee for the development and building of the Performing Arts Centre in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool City Council gives Citizenship Awards annually.This is a significant item because it was an award received by Cyril Hayward, a prominent person in the Warrnambool Arts scene for 30 years.This is a bronze-coloured medallion presented to Cyril Hayward as a citizenship award in 1982. It is circular in shape with the crest of the City of Warrnambool on one side and a laurel wreath with inscriptions on the other. It has a ring at the top for hanging the item. It is in a black leather box lined with red velvet and white silk and includes a small metal stand to display the medallion. Minnie Mary Fimmel (1880-1965) was born at Kewell, near Minyip and married carpenter John Thomas Francis Moroney in 1897. His death left her a widow with two children. Minnie re-invented herself as Marie Minnie Dalley and commenced menial work in Melbourne. Known as ‘Ma’, she became a financially successful businesswoman, eventually owning various properties around Victoria including a ‘machinery factory’. She was much ‘talked about’ in the newspapers for her benevolent actions, particularly towards women. For this community service she received an O.B.E. in 1949. Aged 74, she became the first female mayor of Kew. Ma Dalley refused to accept a formal presentation of the honour at a ‘return ball’, insisting that the money be donated to St George’s Hospital, Kew. She continued to financially donate to various charitable organisations. Her piéce de résistance was a staggering £250,000 personal donation to further the building of St George’s Hospital. This booklet (fourth edition) was written in Warrnambool in 1910 by William Britton Harvey. The book has the sub-title ‘A Study in Nature and Character – Being a Quiet Talk to an Imaginary Audience of Young Men and Young Women’. Born in Britain, William Britton Harvey was the Editor of the Warrnambool Standard newspaper from 1905 to 1919. It was he who initiated in Warrnambool the scheme known as the Annual Hospital Egg Appeal, a community activity that was later adopted by most hospitals in Australia. William Britton Harvey wrote other small books of a similar nature to ‘Human Pearls in a Beautiful Setting’. This book is important because it was written in Warrnambool in 1910 by William Britton Harvey – a prominent person in Warrnambool at the beginning of the 20th century. It is a good example of the type of didactic book written 100 years ago with the purpose of encouraging high moral conduct in the youth of the day. This is a small soft cover booklet of 32 pages. The cover is cream with a woven pattern and the lettering on the front cover is gold. The cover has one gold line separating the name of the book from that of the author and the letter ‘H’ has an ornamental border. The cover overlaps the pages. The pages are a cream colour with blue printing. There are six black and white illustrations. The cover is torn at the edges and there is some silverfish damage on the back cover. This book was written by Charles Haddon Spurgeon (1834-1892), a famous and influential English Protestant preacher who attracted a great following in the 19th century, not only in England, but throughout the British Empire and U.S.A. He reached the masses by producing many religious tracts, costing one penny, and publishing his sermons and his John Ploughman books with their simple homilies. These books were sub-titled ‘Plain Talk for Plain People’ with the copy we have being the second in the series labelled ‘140th thousand’ and published in 1892, the year of Spurgeon’s death. It appears that Spurgeon’s books were in many a home in Warrnambool in the 19th century. This book is of great interest as one which was familiar to many residents of Warrnambool and district in the 19th century. Charles Spurgeon was apparently widely known to Warrnambool residents in the 19th century. The Warrnambool Examiner newspaper frequently carried news items about Spurgeon’s eloquent preaching and the crowds he was drawing. It also published some of his sermons from time to time and reported at length his final illness and death. One of the unidentified photograph albums in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society contains a photograph of Charles Spurgeon and his wife. This is a book of 158 pages with some of the pages missing at the end. The book is coverless and held together with string and a piece of glued paper. The airliner, Miss Hobart a four engine DH86, went missing in the vicinity of Wilsons Promontory on a flight from Launceston to Essendon on the morning 19 October 1934. The Desoutter VH-UPR was one of the planes involved in the search.
