The new facility named Hopkins Barracks was officially opened by HRH Prince Charles on 31 October 1985. Alfred Frederick Samuel Genton was born in Switzerland around1869 and arrived in England date unclear. By 1901 the Kelly’s Directory of Birmingham had listed the Genton & Kessler company as manufactures of all kinds of ship & railway lamps, fog horns and general ship fittings with their factory listed as the Bingley Works King Edward Place Birmingham UK that is listed in 1896 as being was owned and run by J E & H Player. Then in February 1905 it appears the partnership of Alfred F S Genton & Julius Rudolf Kessler was dissolved and Alfred F S Genton continued to carry on the business on his own. T. & C. Clark & Company Limited, based at Shakespeare Foundry, was founded in 1795 by Thomas and Charles Clark and grew to be one of the largest iron foundries in Wolverhampton. The firm was the pioneers of Enameled Cast ironware and the founder Charles Clerk went on to became mayor of Wolverhampton in 1860 after also serving as a Councillor, Alderman, and later Chief Magistrate. The company exhibited many products at the International Exhibition of 1862 at South Kensington, alongside the gardens of the Royal Horticultural Society. The company was also awarded the silver medal for its products at the International Paris Exhibition in 1878. The company's product range included thousands of items, both domestic and industrial. T & C Clark pioneered the use of enameled cast ironware, after taking out a patent in 1839 guaranteed to be free of lead or arsenic. In the late 1940s and 1950s the company produced acid-resisting enameled cast iron boiling pans; steam-jacketed pans; stills; square and rectangular tanks; open and closed mixing vessels; flanged pipes; bends and tees; laboratory equipment; small scale plant; evaporating bowls; beakers; sulphonates; and glass-lined mild steel tanks for beer, mineral water, and food. The item is a kerosene marine ships lamp used onboard ships and smaller vessels for general lighting and navigation the subject lamp was made in Melbourne by a known maker James Paterson. The writer at this time cannot ascertain any significant historical information regarding the company or its founder, however lamps made by James Paterson of Melbourne are rare and regarded as collector's items and would command significant sale prices. All that is currently known is that the James Paterson Lamp manufacturing company were located at 30 Little Collins St Melbourne, and were active in Dec 1885 & in 1886 from newspaper articles of the time. Gould manufacturing company was founded in 1848 at Seneca Falls, New York when Seabury S. Gould purchased an interest in Downs, Mynderse & Co. and the firm became Downs & Co. Wooden pumps were produced at the time in an old cotton factory building. In 1869, the name of the company was changed from Downs & Company to Goulds Manufacturing Company. Seabury S. Gould was regarded as a man of unusual vision, and as the founder of Goulds Manufacturing Company he was keen to start producing cast iron pumps. An iron pump, he believed, would overcome all the disadvantages of a wooden pump. It would be strong and efficient and provide fresh flowing water for the pioneers. He ran the company until after the American Civil War and because Goulds Manufacturing had a foundry, they also produced all kinds of cast iron products such as corn shellers, bells, sad irons, sinks, tools, and a line of fire engines. From 1848 to 1964 a Gould family member had always been President of the company. However, the company ownership in 1964 was transferred from family-owned stock to public offerings and employee ownership of stock. The subject item called the "N e w Deluge" was an improved bilge pump for vessels having not more than 25 feet depth of hold. It was also used by contractors for pumping out excavations and was well adapted for irrigation use. This hand pump was designed to be used where a hand pump of large capacity was desired. During World War I Tilley lamps were used by the British armed forces, and became so popular that Tilley became used as a generic name for a kerosene lamp in many parts of the world, in much the same way as Hoover is used for vacuum cleaners. During the 1920s the company had diversified into domestic lamps, and had expanded rapidly after orders from railway companies. The company was originally founded by Frederick Perkins a Russian immigrant schooled in Germany as a machinist and tool and die, maker. Frederick came to the United States in the early 1890s and soon became employed as a machinist for E.W. Bliss & Company in Brooklyn, New York. In the early 1900s, he and a partner began operating a business, F. Persky & Company, Lantern Manufacturer, out of the basement of his house. In 1907, Frederick's son Louis joined him in the business, and together they enlarged both the product line and the manufacturing facilities. By 1912, they had seventeen employees and made a wide range of marine lanterns and products. The business continued operating until 1913 when Frederick became president of National Marine Lamp Company, based out of Forestville, Connecticut. Frederick and Louis left that company in 1916 and moved back to Brooklyn, New York, where they started Perkins Marine Lamp Corporation. Five generations later, PERKO is still a privately owned, family-operated corporation. Perkins Marine Corporation was initially known as Perkins Marine Lamp, Inc. The original focus was on the manufacture of hand-formed sheet metal products for the marine market. The first “Perko” catalogue was published in 1916. It included a full range of kerosene and electric lanterns for small and large boats, ventilators, chart cases, signalling devices, mooring buoys, pumps and a variety of spare parts. These products, fabricated from brass, copper and galvanized sheet metal, began a reputation for producing high-quality products. In 1922, the "PERKO" trademark was instituted with each new product utilising the latest, sophisticated metal manufacturing technology.A significant item from an American manufacturer that specialises in making marine products and is still in business today under the same trade name. Vehicle - Furphy water cart, J. Furphy & Sons, 1942
This horse-drawn, two-wheeled Furphy Farm Water Cart was made during the Second World War. The jinker (cart with tank) was purchased by Friends of Flagstaff Hill in 2014. The support of local individuals, organisations and businesses enabled its restoration and later its installation alongside the existing late-19th century water pipe stand and 1940s hand pump. The basic stand including axle and wheels is original to the tank. The group of items is now a working display in the Village, in acknowledgement of one of Friends of Flagstaff Hill’s long serving members, Bob Crossman. The display was officially opened on March 31, 2018. The pump is used to draw water from the lake, through the water pipe stand and into the Furphy tank. The cast iron tank ends on this 1942 cart advertise Furphy’s products and include two shorthand massages, transcribed "Water is the gift of God but beer and whiskey are concoctions of the Devil, come and have a drink of water", and "Produce and populate or perish" next to the image of a stork carrying a baby. The first expression may reflect the family’s Methodist beliefs. This second sentiment was previously expressed by the 1934 Australian Minister for Health and Repatriation, who used the saying “Populate or perish” in his campaign against the falling population. The letters “ S - - - - - L” originally showed the complete word “SPECIAL”, but the central letters were lost in the restoration of the tank. A message on the hub warns the owner to “KEEP THE BOLTS TIGHT”. JOHN FURPHY (1842-1920) John Furphy opened his business as an engineering blacksmith and wheelwright in Kyneton, Victoria, in 1864 after serving his apprenticeship there with Hutchinson & Walker, a firm of blacksmiths and implement makers. He was founder of the first blacksmith’s and wheelwright’s shop in the newly surveyed town of Shepparton in 1873. The firms J. Furphy & Son’s and Furphy Foundry continue even now after five generations. He was also heavily involved in the Methodist church there for many years, holding various roles including lay preacher. Furphy invented many farming tools and machines including a patented grain-stripper, and won awards at the 1888-89 International Exhibition. Furhhy’s most famous invention is the Furphy Farm Water Cart, designed in the 1880s, at a time when water for most households, farms and stock was carted on wagons in wooden barrels. Furphy’s water cart was easily pulled by a single horse. It reduced time and effort, so people soon saw the advantages. It became so popular that the Furphy Foundry was built to keep up the supply, casting moulds for the parts and ends. The cast iron ends of the tanks were originally plain but soon carried the maker’s name and location. From 1895 Furphy began advertising his foundry’s products on the ends than in 1898hae added his own poem – "Good, better, best - never let it rest - till your good is better - and your better – best”. Many variations of inscriptions were used over the years and by the 1980s there was a map of Australia and the firm’s logo. Sometimes limited editions were made for special events too. The word ‘Furphy’, is often used in Australia to mean an embellished story or rumour, said to have originated during the First World War when the Furphy water carts were used to supply water to military camps in Australia and overseas, including Gallipoli. Troops would gather around the carts and naturally share news with each other and the cart drivers, who would then spread the sometimes unreliable news from camp to camp. Production of cast parts, and the famous ends, ceased in 1983 and was replaced by hot dipped, galvanised parts, lighter and more cost effective. The water tanks are still produced and old ones can be reconditioned too, using the traditional methods. The Furphy Farm Water Cart is of historical significance as it represents a famous Australian time-saving and energy-saving invention of the 1880s, replacing the labour intensive activity of collecting and dispensing water from barrels and casks on the back of carts. The water cart’s connection with manufacturing companies J. Furphy & Sons and Furphy Foundry are significant for being early Australian businesses that are still in operation today. Furphy carts are of military significance for the role they played during World War I in Australia, Europe and the Middle East, Including Gallipoli, to supply Australian troops with fresh water. Water card, named Furphy Farm Water Cart. A wooden framed, two-wheeled, horse-drawn cart permanently fitted with a horizontally mounted, cylindrical metal tank (or barrel) that has an inlet and an outlet. The tank is made of rolled, sheet steel with a riveted seam, and cast iron ends with cast iron ends. The spoked metal wheels have fitted flat iron tyres and metal hubs. A metal pipe is joined to the outlet. The tank is silver coloured, the ends, wheels and trims are crimson, and the script lettering on tank sides is black. There are inscriptions on the tank, ends, and hubs. The water tank was made in 1942 in Shepparton, Australia, by J. Furphy & Sons and has a capacity of 180 gallons (848 litres). A flat-wick lamp is a simple type of kerosene lamp, which burns kerosene drawn up through a wick by capillary action. A flat-wick lamp has a fuel tank (fount), with the lamp burner attached. Four prongs hold the glass chimney, which acts to prevent the flame from being blown out and enhances a thermally induced draft. The glass chimney needs a "throat," or slight constriction, to create the proper draft for complete combustion of the fuel; the draft carries more air (oxygen) past the flame, helping to produce a smokeless light which is brighter than that produced by an open flame. The lamp burner has a flat wick, usually made of cotton. The lower part of the wick dips into the fount and absorbs the kerosene; the top part of the wick extends out of the wick tube of the lamp burner, which includes a wick-adjustment mechanism. Adjusting how much of the wick extends above the wick tube controls the flame. The wick tube surrounds the wick, and ensures that the correct amount of air reaches the lamp burner. Adjustment is usually done by means of a small knob operating a toothed, metal sprocket bearing against the wick. Sailed on board its maiden voyage to Australia via Casablanca Morocco where she collected her first load of phosphate. We sailed to Geelong via the Suez canal and the Port of Aden (Yemen) and Freemantle.
