Tarax was an independent Melbourne soft drink manufacturer from 1959 to 1972 (when it was taken over by Cadbury Schweppes). It was most popular as a product in the 1960s when it sponsored by the Tarax Show; a very popular children's television program. In the 1960s Polly Farmer was a star Geelong footballer. He played in a premiership team and was captain for 3 years. The game originally cost 75 cents plus 6 Tarax bottle tops. Lydia Chancellor (1889-Dec 1979) Her parents were George Pethard and Miriam Peatling. George founded Tarax soft drinks in Numurkah in 1898 before moving to Bendigo in 1902 and establishing a brewing factory there. He also built the home "Taraxville" in Panton St. The factory ceased operation in Bendigo during WW1. After the war, the firm was re-established by George jnr, brewing in Melbourne. Lydia married Norman George Chancellor in 1924 but he died 2 yrs later. Lydia returned to Bendigo to care for her mother and began an extensive collection of Toby jugs. She donated 100 jugs to the Bendigo Art Gallery in 1973. Prior to the election of female Councillor's and Mayors, the Mayoress role as wife of the Mayor, was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties. Mayoress's played an important role in civic life through charity work, even stepping in on occasions to undertake Mayoral duties. Roadside buildings, formerly Doney's General Store. Doney's operated from the 1880s through to the late 1960s. It was situated at the head of the present day Research shops on Main Road near the corner of Raglan Road. By the 1960s it was under new ownership. The Store had a residence at the back. Signs promote The Herald and Sun newspapers, four 'n twenty pies, coca cola and more. A public phone box is in the front of the store. Beside the store is possibly an old farm building with more signs advertising honey, Streets, Tarax and a local bottle dump.
