In December 1854, troops of the 12th and 40th Regiments marching to suppress the Eureka Stockade would have used this route before stopping at the Rockbank Inn, which was located on Beatty's Road, further west towards Melton. This excerpt is the final stanza of the classic poem and hymn "The Spacious Firmament on High" (often titled Ode or Ode to Creation), written by English essayist and poet Joseph Addison in 1712. • Inspiration: Based closely on Psalm 19:1–6 ("The heavens declare the glory of God..."). • Meaning: The poem reflects Enlightenment-era natural theology, arguing that even though the planets and stars move through the silent vacuum of space without literal spoken words or sound, their orderly mathematical precision speaks to human reason as a silent, eternal song praising their Creator.Traditional child's sampler on ecru linen embroidered in green, red and black threads and stitches. Small external border in a traditional design of strawberries. Alphabet and numbers at top in cream thread. Small border separates a central verse in black with large potted ? wisteria in eyelet stitch. Flanked by two potted flowering trees and smaller tree motifs." What though in solemn silence all Move round this dark terrestrial ball What though no real voice nor sound Around their radiant orbs be found In reason's ear they all rejoice and utter forth a glorious voice For ever singing as they shine The hand that made us is divine". The Australian White Ibis is commonly known by the colloquial names "bin chicken" and "tip turkey" in Australian culture. These nicknames have arisen based on the presence of this bird at garbage locations where it is often seen rummaging through the waste. The Yindjibarndi people of the central and western Pilbara call this species mardungurra. This bird is located throughout the wetlands of eastern, northern and south-western Australia. Initially, it was not seen in urban areas, however, the species has been able to adapt and reduce fear of humans due to the lure of food found in human garbage. They commonly feed on terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates alongside human scraps. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This Australian White Ibis has white and cream plumage on its body and a black neck, head, bill and legs/feet. The bill on this particular species has a distinctive long shape which is down-curved. It is a fairly large variety of the Ibis species. This specimen has been stylised in a standing position and is positioned on a wooden platform. 5 C. / White Ibis / See catalogue / Page 32 /taxidermy mount, taxidermy, animalia, burke museum, beechworth, australian museum, skin, reynell eveleigh johns, bird, ibis, bin chicken, white ibis, australian birds, australian white ibis
