This sewing machine screwdriver likely belonged to Ruby May Selina Wallace (1891-1973) of Inglewood, Victoria. It was donated by an Emerald resident. Several items of clothing owned by Ruby or her mother Ellen Dowsett (1858-1953) are also in the Emerald and District Museum collection; the sewing machine associated with this screwdriver likely played a part in the maintenance, repair and possible creation of several of those items. Sewing machine screwdrivers are still used in the operation and repair of modern sewing machines, but it is rare to find bent wire versions like this item, which was also designed for an older model of sewing machine. This tool is representative of the processes of making and maintaining clothes in early 20th century domestic life, is no longer in common manufacture in this form, and was involved in the creation of several items in the collection.This screwdriver made of bent metal wire consists of a loop (ideal for holding during operation), a shaft bent in a rounded right angle, and a flat head pointing perpendicular to the direction of the loop. The right angle allows for more turning force to be applied through the head of the screwdriver than would be possible with a straight version, and makes it easier to access certain parts of the sewing machine.N/A1920s, textiles, clothing

This pair of fire fighters beaters were donated by the Emerald Fire Brigade which was established on 14 March 1941 as the Emerald Bush Brigade. Originally its equipment was stored at Madigan's butcher's shop near the corner of Monbulk Road. The Brigade's first fire station was built around 1945. In 1966, this station was recorded as containing the fire truck and a Land rover pumper, three radio sets, 40 knapsacks, six lengths of hose, helmets, rake hoes and other hand tools. In 2010, the Brigade moved into a new purpose-built building in Monbulk Road. These beaters date from the 1950s to 1960s.These fire fighters beaters were used by members of a crucial volunteer fire fighting service operating in the Emerald district since 1941.Two Firefighter Beaters each consisting of a long round, red wooden pole with wide heavy-duty textile straps attached to the bottom of the pole. A Textile Designer’s Fabric Sample Book is an important tool for keeping a record of past designs. This is useful in order to showcase a designer’s previous work; functioning like a portfolio or a résumé. They also serve as a source of inspiration, sometimes even providing a template to re-release iconic designs. The National Wool Museum has a large collection of Fabric Sample Books. They reveal the colour and daring designs produced by textile mills across various time periods. This Fabric Sample Book is from the 1920s and gives us insights into design trends that are now over a century old.The cover of this book has a brown/grey marble. It carries many marks and oils from the hands, after more than a century of use. A strip of red tape has been added to the spine of the book in order to give it integrity. The book internally has white pages that have turned a brown/cream with age. These pages have a faint blue line printed horizontally across them, to assist with handwriting. The contents of the pages are fabric samples which have been staple to them, as well as handwriting with a blue ink. The pages also include technical drawings, relating to the fabric samples and how such samples were woven together.textile design, textile manufacture

This sampler booklet was made by Rose Plummer. She was born in Albury in 1886. During late 19th and early 20th centuries, women and girls made handicraft samplers as essential educational tools to learn and display needlework skills and record patterns. These embroidered pieces served as both a "textile Curriculum Vitae" for working-class girls and a public declaration of accomplishment and diligence for girls of all backgrounds. Simple samplers were a standard part of a girl's education and often simply recorded the alphabet, numbers, and more advanced stitches through a process of repetition and imitation. The samplers were also a way to record and share decorative patterns and stitches. They demonstrated a young girl's proficiency in needlework and sewing, essential skills for household linen and mending. For working-class girls, samplers acted as a practical "textile Curriculum Vitae," showcasing their sewing abilities to potential employers for domestic service or related employment. Nino Corda was a Geelong based textile designer who worked at various textile mills between 1957 & 2003. He travelled the world in search of the latest fashions and techniques and developed timeless designs that were much loved by Australians. These items are on rotational display at the National Wool Museum’s ‘In the Factory’ exhibition. For many years, Nino also worked as part of the Honorary Staff of the National Wool Museum. His passion for the world of textiles provided energy and knowledge to the visitors and staff of the museum. Although Nino has now retired from his honorary position and has hung up his Australian Tartan vest, these items will continue to serve the community in sharing the stories of Australian Textile design.Custom made wooden hinged box with a hook latch. Such design magazines were utilised by Australian designers to help inspiration for the upcoming season's fashion.
