This image appears to show nurses at what is now the Mayday Hills Mental Asylum arriving for work in approximately 1900. These individuals are part of a long history of nursing in Beechworth. Three medical or social welfare facilities opened in the mid-1800s as part of a push by the township to become a regional centre for Government services. These were the Ovens District Hospital (opened in 1857), the Ovens Benevolent Asylum (opened in 1863), and the Beechworth Mental Hospital (opened in 1867 and renamed Mayday Hills Hospital at Centenary celebrations in 1967). It was recognised that the unsettled living conditions, poverty and relative isolation of the Goldfields environment could produce 'mental disturbances' which required local treatment facilities as services in Melbourne were too far away. Carole Woods' publication 'A Titan's Field' describes activities undertaken by patients at Beechworth Mental Hospital as including monthly balls and occasional concerts as well as work to make the facility self-supporting such as farm work and making clothes. She mentions a report in 1870 that the approximately 300 patients were clean and neat with 'no-one in restraint or seclusion' but that by 1905 the organisation had 623 patients which placed strain on building infrastructure such as heating and water supplies, leading to high turnover of nurses and other issues. A program of building works to extend and improve facilities followed over subsequent decades. Lantern slides, sometimes called 'magic lantern' slides, are glass plates on which an image has been secured for the purpose of projection. Glass slides were etched or hand-painted for this purpose from the Eighteenth Century but the process became more popular and accessible to the public with the development of photographic-emulsion slides used with a 'Magic Lantern' device in the mid-Nineteenth Century. Photographic lantern slides comprise a double-negative emulsion layer (forming a positive image) between thin glass plates that are bound together. This photograph was with a number of others associated with Harry Holmes of Ascot, Victoria. The postcard was written on by Harry Holmes who was a member of the Australian Imperial Force based in Egypt at the time. Nurse Kirkham is Laurie Hemsley Kirkham She was admitted to the Suez Public Hospital (Abbassia) post 06 January 1916. She left Australia with a group of South Australian nurses. Egypt was a major base for the AIF from December 1914. A number of campaigns were fought in this theatre. There were two campaigns involving the AIF. Note that not all the fighting was actually geographically in Egypt. (http://www.aif.adfa.edu.au:8888/about3.html) The Nurse Kirkam mentioned by the writer is probably Sarah Alice Kirkham, Staff Nurse with the Australian Army Nursing Service. Nurse Kirkham was from North Perth, Western Australia. She was posted to the Auxiliary Hospital, Egypt on 09 November 1915 leaving for France on 23 June 1916. Samuel Gordon Spittle (8005) enlisted into the AIF on 17 July 1915, a member of the 18th Australian Army Service Corps (AASC). He left Alexandria on 15 June 1916 disembarking at Marseilles 24 June 1916. Harry Holmes was discharged from a hospital in Egypt on 15 August 1919. He was awarded the Military Medal promulgated on 11 December 1919. Before the training of nurses at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (now University of Ballarat) Ballarat nurses trained at the Ballarat Base Hospital. The 1978 Annual report gives the following hospital background: 'The foundation stone for the original 42 bed hospital was laid on the existing site on 25th December, 1855. Ballarat at that time had a population of between 40,000 and 50,000 people, with the demands on the hospital services being mainly for medical care resulting from mining accidents. Medical, Nursing and General care were provided by the resident Surgeon, matron and wardsmen. Financial support depended on donations from churches masonic lodges, the public and bequests. The hospital today provides centralized health services and specialist medical, surgical and ancillart assistance to the communities in the Central Highlands Region. The trend in hospital financing today has changed and is based to a large extent on State and Commonwealth Grants. Contribution from the public remain important particulalry in the purchase of equipement and ultimately the services provided by the hospital. Since 1887 the Ballarat Base Hospital has been an important training centre for nurses. Margaret Stevens was the inaugural Head of Nursing at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education from June 1985 until her retirement in 1989. During the 1980s there was a growing acceptance around Australia that Nurse Education needed to be more science based to allow nurses to cope with the vastly increased appearance of technological devices in the hospital wards. The response was to shift such training into Higher Education institutions. The State Government decided that Nurse Training in Ballarat should move from the Hospital to Ballarat College of Advanced Education. in 1986. Margaret Stevens had been a senior Nurse Educator at the Ballarat Base Hospital for many years and was selected by mutual agreement between the two institutions to devise the new course and plan its implementation so that it would gain the approval of the Nurse Registration authority. In addition to consulting widely with other Nurse Education specialists and supporting departments in Ballarat College of Advanced Education, Margaret negotiated with over 70 medical establishments to work out arrangements by which the students would be placed in work experience as required by the course. She was also involved in the required additional staff appointments and in planning for a new building on Campus. The course was commenced in 1986 and the transition successfully achieved, thanks largely to Margaret's diligence. In 1987 the Review of Registration of Health Practitioners interim report was published by the Health Department Victoria. Margaret Stevens was appointed by the Health Minister to represent the College of Nursing, Australia. This was a landmark review with long-reaching implications. At the time of her death on 23 March 2015 she was a member of the Board of Ballarat Community Health, and was identified as follows R.N.; B.App.Sc (Nursing); Post Basic: DipEd(N); Kellogg Fellow (USA 1984-85), M.Ed. Edith Louisa Cavell (4 December 1865 – 12 October 1915) was a British nurse and patriot. She is celebrated for saving the lives of soldiers from all sides without distinction and in helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I, for which she was arrested. She was subsequently court-martialled, found guilty of treason and sentenced to death. Despite international pressure for mercy, she was shot by a German firing squad. Her execution received worldwide condemnation and extensive press coverage. This uniform was worn by student nurses at the Hillcrest Psychiatric Hospital in Adelaide in the early 1970s. In 1964, Northfield Mental Hospital was renamed Hillcrest Hospital. .1) Mid pink waisted and darted uniform with a front pocket (with H H embroidered) on left breast and side pockets on skirt. Buttoned up the front, with three buttons on top and a placket with four hidden buttons on skirt. There is a hook and eye at the waist and a separate belt with two buttons and buttonholes. Its twisted old trunk is gnarled, its disembowelled carcass plump with cement and now, like many outback legends, its cadaverously pale and very dead. It has stood, an unmolested leafy sentinel, over Barcaldine’s Railway Station depot since the 1880s. It was a living Australian Labor Party memorial and heritage-listed. The double centurion, Oak Street’s most senior resident, was respectfully nursed into its dotage by Barcaldine’s faithful. Countless thousands of travellers photographed it, patted it and peered up at its bushy green tops with dutiful reverence. ... And then, by an act of craven foul play, it was murdered. Allegedly. Cold, hard forensic science pronounced death by poisoning. Sometime around May Day 2007 they reckon.
