An article about a memorial being built to commemorate Australia'a war service nurses. It is due to be opened in October 1999 to mark the centenary of Australian miltary nursing. In attendence at the ceremony, amongst a large group of Australians, were Vivian Bullwinkel, Wilma Young and Pat Darling - three nurses who survived the 1942 Japanese invasion of Singapore and three and a half years as prisoners-of-war. Mrs Eve Ainsworth, from Lower Mitcham, South Australia became the first woman delegate of the Returned Services League (RSL). Eve joined the RSL in 1944, after serving at the 2/2nd Australian General Hospital (AGH) at El Kantara during the Middle East campaign in WW2, then at the 2/11th AGH in Warwick, Queensland. She has held office in the Returned Sisters' sub-branch for 28 years in various roles. The letter to editor is written from L. D. Emerson-Elliot. The writer commends Australian nurses who shared in the danger of air and ground attacks in Singapore by the Japanese in 1942. They go on to detail the a particular incident when the ship they were on was under heavy air attack. The captain sent them to check on the nurses and their charges. Through the horror of blasted metal, blood and shattered bodies the nurses were quietly and steadfastly continuing their work. The writer states that Sister Anderson received the George Medal for that day, but that they believe that all nurses who have served in wars deserve a memorial. The group officer of the Diamond Creek Fire Brigade, Mr Tom Harrington, said tonight that he thought it was a "miracle" that no-one lost their lives in the fires. A relief centre for the homeless was set up by the Diamond Valley Shire Council. Mr Harrington said that the first fire call in the town was received at 10.45 am. During the recent refurbishment of our Local History Centre we came across a roll of 35mm colour negatives which at some stage had been exposed to water or similar resulting in the individual strips sticking to each other and the old paper film processing envelope. The situation looked hopeless but one of our members had an idea on how to salvage them; after all, we had nothing to lose. In the end we were able to separate the film strips and remove most of the paper residue except some of the adhesive. The film was scanned and even though suffering from various light issues; fading, possible exposure problems and a yellow shadow cast by the adhesive residue, the detail and historical information they contain has been rescued. These images are all centred around the intersection of Beard Street and Main Road Eltham.
