This is used to print or impress the date on the ticket so validating it for use. These machines were developed by the Edmondson Company in the 19th century and Waterlow also produced similar machines. Even the smallest station had one and larger stations often had dozens. The most common variety in the UK printed the date on the ticket by using printers' type and an inked ribbon. Another variety impressed the date of the ticket with special sharp type. This was specially useful in hot climates where the ink dried out very quickly and also had the advantage of avoiding the use of the ribbon and the need to re-wind and re-ink it. This is a ticket dating press which was used at Railway Stations to date and validate passenger tickets. This looks like those made by the company - Edmondson - and used all over the world. There is, however, no maker's mark or stamp on this machine.This tickets press was most likely used at Portland Railway Station.Black, metal cylindrical object. The bottom of the object has a base with a larger diameter than the main cylinder. Along the length on one side of the cylinder is a hinged opening. The flips upwards and sits on top of the cylinder when open. Inside are 3 brass spools on which there is wound black ribbon. Photograph shows tramway traffic inspectors looking at Gibson ticket machine that has caused a strike at the Footscray bus depot over the use of one-man buses. Details of the event are give in the Melbourne Herald 20/11/1953 - see first reference for the Trove link. The strike also stopped the tram services. Des Shooter Union Delegate was suspended over the issue - Reference trove link 2 and 3 for for developments of the story.
