It raised funds to benefit returned soldiers who had fallen on hard times after the war and during the Great Depression. It continued on during WW2 and into the 1950s. This badge is c1940. The tin hat badge was modelled on the British steel combat helmet known as the Brodie helmet, designed and patented in London in 1915 by John Leopold Brodie. Colloquially, it had many names including the shrapnel helmet, battle bowler, Tommy helmet, tin hat, dishpan hat, tin pan hat, washbasin, and in the United States the doughboy helmet. The German Army called it the Salatschüssel (salad bowl).Tin Hat Day was a significant annual event over several decades. Costumes were reused in different years. These costumes include a beefeater, an English soldier with a bear skin hat, a soldier with a tin hat and a girl in a floral dress. The floral dress costume was used in a scene set in Holland with wind mills in other photos but this could be a different year. It is possible this was taken at a rehearsal by a newspaper and used in promoting the event. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. They all appear to be c. 1920s. 2717.1 Bombala was at the terminus of a railway line in NSW, and also road routes. 2717.2 shows the intensive labour force involved with agriculture in the 1920s eg. beans. 2717.3 shows the man-made entrance to Lakes Entrance, with the Steam Ship Wyrallah sailing through. This ship was a regular coastal trader from Melbourne to Lks. Entrance. She was sunk in 1924 when run down by the SS Dilkerra at Pt Phillip Heads, with a loss of 6 lives.These photographs are significant because they show different aspects of East Gippsland locations c.1920s.3 b/w photographs/postcards 2717.1 shows the street with buildings, some two-storey on both sides of the street. A number of cars and people are in the street. 2717.2 shows a flat paddock with rows of a crop (probably beans), and 20-30 people, men, women and children. Many of them carry baskets or tins and wear hats. Hat Box ...This hat box could have been used for either a man’s or a woman’s hat in the days when it was the custom for both men and women to wear a hat when outside the house or on social occasions. It would have been used in the home or for travel, especially when on board a ship. Hat boxes today may still be used but are usually made of cardboard or other less durable material.This box was acquired over 40 years ago from a local person. It is retained for display purposes.This is a round metal box with a circular base and a lid affixed with a metal hinge. The lid is wider at the front of the tin allowing for extra height for the stored item. The lid had a metal clip handle and there is a front metal clip for closing the box.
