Tin Hat Day was established in 1922 after the end of WWI. It raised funds to benefit returned soldiers who had fallen on hard times after the war and during the Great Depression. It continued on during WW2 and into the 1950s. This badge is c1940. The tin hat badge was modelled on the British steel combat helmet known as the Brodie helmet, designed and patented in London in 1915 by John Leopold Brodie. Colloquially, it had many names including the shrapnel helmet, battle bowler, Tommy helmet, tin hat, dishpan hat, tin pan hat, washbasin, and in the United States the doughboy helmet. The German Army called it the Salatschüssel (salad bowl).Tin Hat Day was a significant annual event over several decades. Badges such as are not rare; they were sold in large numbers but as ephemeral items relatively few of those sold were retained.A round metal badge with a domed centre, mimicking a stylised tin hat. This is an example of posters with a patriotic theme the purpose of which was to raise money for goods for service personal overseas, during WW2. "Tin-hat" badges were sold for 1 and 2 shillings and 1pound. The 'tin-hat' appeal was conducted from 4 Sept - 17 Sept in 1943. Organised by the Returned Soldiers League. A poster is superimposed on a hidden print. This badge was produced by the Returned Services league War Comforts Fund in World War Two to provide comforts for the soldiers serving abroad. The appeal was held annually throughout the war. A steel helmet, popularly called a tin hat, is used as protective headwear by military personnel and civil workers in times of emergency and disasters. Steel helmets were first used in World War One, with the Allies troops using a design produced in London by John Brodie in 1915. This helmet was constructed in one piece pressed from a single thick sheet of steel and variants of this design have been used by military personnel ever since. It is not clear whether this particular item comes from World War One or World War Two. This steel helmet is retained as a good example of the protective headwear worn by Australian military personnel in World Wars One or Two.The crown of his helmet or tin hat is of an oval shape and it has a short flattened brim. It is a green helmet, in the shape of a kettle hat. It is a tin hat or Brodie helmet. It is On the chin strap, there are the initials C.G.H and the service number V156143. There are size stamps on the back of the suspension webbing as well as on the underside edge of the helmet. The size is 7 1/4. On both chin strap luggs, it is engraved with MKIII 1941. Colloquially called the 'Tin Hat' this helmet was designed by John L Brodie in response to the French helmets. It was easilly pressed from a single sheet of steel and saw service with all British Empire/Commonwealth Forces. War Savings Cards were a popularist and accessible means of encouraging the ordinary citizens and children to contribute to the war effort by buying stamps to adhere to cards such as this. The stamps were valued at 6d and were of a blue and white image of a WW2 Spitfire plane. In addition there were war savings certificates, a type of promissory note, which were sold to hundreds of thousands of Australians during World War I and World War II.A beige card (unfolded and unused) printed in navy blue. The front is illustrated with the Australian coat-of-arms, space for the owner's personal details, information about the collection of war saving stamps, and the words "Sixpence a day keeps invaders away". On the back is "Don't be an onlooker - be in the fight". A photo of junior legatees in costume for an Annual Demonstration, the date is unknown. Costumes were reused in different years. These costumes include a beefeater, an English soldier with a bear skin hat, a soldier with a tin hat and a girl in a floral dress. The floral dress costume was used in a scene set in Holland with wind mills in other photos but this could be a different year. It is possible this was taken at a rehearsal by a newspaper and used in promoting the event. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. Dawn Service 25 April 1936 “And in the morning, we will remember them” A ghostly crowd of predominantly men gather before the Shrine of Remembrance at the Anzac Dawn Service on 25 April 1936. The picture was taken just before the Two Minutes’ silence. An estimated 8,000 were in attendance. These 3 photos are of locations in East Gippsland. They all appear to be c. 1920s. 2717.1 Bombala was at the terminus of a railway line in NSW, and also road routes. 2717.2 shows the intensive labour force involved with agriculture in the 1920s eg. beans. 2717.3 shows the man-made entrance to Lakes Entrance, with the Steam Ship Wyrallah sailing through. This ship was a regular coastal trader from Melbourne to Lks. Entrance. She was sunk in 1924 when run down by the SS Dilkerra at Pt Phillip Heads, with a loss of 6 lives.These photographs are significant because they show different aspects of East Gippsland locations c.1920s.3 b/w photographs/postcards 2717.1 shows the street with buildings, some two-storey on both sides of the street. A number of cars and people are in the street. 2717.2 shows a flat paddock with rows of a crop (probably beans), and 20-30 people, men, women and children. Many of them carry baskets or tins and wear hats. This hat box could have been used for either a man’s or a woman’s hat in the days when it was the custom for both men and women to wear a hat when outside the house or on social occasions. It would have been used in the home or for travel, especially when on board a ship. Hat boxes today may still be used but are usually made of cardboard or other less durable material.This box was acquired over 40 years ago from a local person. It is retained for display purposes.This is a round metal box with a circular base and a lid affixed with a metal hinge. The lid is wider at the front of the tin allowing for extra height for the stored item. The lid had a metal clip handle and there is a front metal clip for closing the box.
