The accounts records in the Medical Accounts book start in February 1929 and refer to many of Warrnambool’s local names and addresses. The ledger book belonged to Dr John Hunter Henderson who conducted his medical practice from his home and surgery at Birchwood, 214 Koroit Street, Warrnambool, from 1904-1939. This particular accounts book spans from February 1929 to May 1931. Dr Henderson retired in 1939 and moved to Melbourne. His home, medical practice and many of his surgery’s items, including the Medical Accounts Book, were transferred to Dr William Roy Angus in that same year. The patients’ addresses on page 1 of the ledger include John Lee of St Marys Road, Wangoom. John Lee’s name has two entries on this page. He Grandfather, also John Lee, was a notable pioneer of the district. JOHN LEE John Lee was born in 1884 and died in 1948. His father (1845-1892) and grandfather (1814-1887) were also named John Lee. John Lee’s Grandfather, Grandmother, Father and Uncle arrived in Australia from Ireland in 1852. The colonial family settled in St Marys Road, Wangoom, Victoria and have a long association with the district. John Lee, born in 1814, is proudly listed amongst the names on the commemorative Warrnambool Pioneers Board, having arrived in Australia In 1852. In 1855 John’s Grandfather John Lee, aged 41, was head teacher of the Tower Hill School on the south bank of Tower Hill. Two years later, in 1857, the north bank of Tower Hill was surveyed and named the township of Koroit. In November of that year John Lee continued on as head master, now at the newly built Tower Hill Lake National School Number 618, on land that is now Victoria Park Recreation Reserve, on High Street, Koroit. John died in Warrnambool in 1887 but even 50 years later an ex-student wrote a letter to The Age newspaper, recalling memories of John Lee, his head master of the 1860s at the Tower Hill Lake Common School in Koroit. DR WILLIAM ROY ANGUS Doctor Angus had previously practiced in Nhill. The accounts book and many more items of Dr Angus were donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the family of Dr Angus, Surgeon and Oculist. The Medical Accounts Book is part of the “W.R. Angus Collection” that includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material once belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) as well as Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr John Henderson from 1904+1939 and Dr Angus until he retired, from 1923 - 1969. The Medical Accounts Book is significant as a record of the names, addresses and health of the people in Warrnambool and District in the early 20th century. The Book is significant for its early 20th century association with two local doctors, Dr John Henderson and Doctor William Roy Angus, whose practices span from 1904-1969. The Book is also significant historically for its association with the ancestors of patient John Lee, whose Grandfather is recognised on the Warrnambool pioneer Board as one of the early pioneers in Victoria, arriving in 1852. The book belonged to Dr John Hunter Henderson. It is part of the W.R. The photograph, created in 1998, is a copy of the original one, depicting a nurse in uniform at the Mental Hospital in Beechworth, with a fern house behind her. In the background, the two-storey building is in view, along with the covered walkway. The institution had to operate with serious shortage of female nurses for long periods of time. During the 1880s, small houses (cottages) were built to offer accommodation for the nurses living in the hospital and in 1937 began the construction of a nurses` hostel. In 1962 the upper level of the Nurses` Home was converted into a Nurses` Training School. The Mayday Hills Hospital was constructed between 1864 and 1867, with buildings created in a number of periods. It formally opened on 24 October 1867 and, along with the Ovens Hospital and the Benevolent Asylum, made Beechworth a prominent social welfare centre in Victoria. The need for an institution of this kind was arisen due to the increased number of people with mental disturbances (induced by the harsh living conditions on the goldfields) and the remoteness of the district from Melbourne. The two-storey buildings, designed in Italianate style, and the three-storey towers at the front, were influenced by the asylum at Colney Hatch in England. Large masses of granite were excavated for its foundation and around 250 workmen were employed for its construction. The building, divided into six sections, was comprised of dormitories, doctors` rooms and plenty ancillary rooms and facilities, such as laundries, reading rooms, a concert hall and cooking areas. The site was chosen for its panoramic view of the countryside, the hilltop atmosphere and the native fauna, all contributing to the cure of patients. The Hospital was originally named the “Ovens Lunatic Asylum” but, during the centenary celebrations in 1967, the name was officially changed to “Mayday Hills Hospital”, showing the gradual shift in the perception and understanding of mental health conditions over the last decades. The Hospital lies on the traditional land of the Kulin Nation.This photograph is historically significant as it provides an insight into the everyday life of staff living within the walls of the Mayday Hills Hospital. The original owner of the beautiful wardrobe was William Swinton Jr. (1860-1929) and was later given to a friend of the Giles family. It is part of the Giles Collection. William Swinton Jnr. was a Warrnambool Councilor 1903-20 and Mayor 1917-19, during which time Warrnambool declared a City (1918). William's father, William Swinton Snr. (c.1831-1901) arrived in Warrnambool in 1854 from Edinburgh, Scotland. He established the Swinton store in Timor Street in 1865 where it is still located. William Snr's grand-daughter, Doris Swinton (1904-1986) was one of Australia's most highly decorated nurses of World War 2 and for 16 years matron of the Warrnambool and District Base Hospital. There is a street in Warrnambool named after the Swinton family. These items mostly came from the simple home of Vera's parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton), whose photos are in the parlour. They married in 1880. Henry Giles was born at Tower Hill in 1858. He was a labourer on the construction of the Breakwater before leaving in 1895 to build bridges in N.S.W. for about seven years. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook. She attended Mailor's Flat State School where she was also a student teacher before, as a family legend has it, she became a governess at "Injemiara" where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family of six, some of whom were born at Mailor’s Flat and later children at Wangoom, lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane in 1940. This album contains a collection of family photos, greeting cards and hand drawn floral emblems. Among the photographs are two which have details on them: a young girl named Margaret Clarke aged 8 1870 and another of Charles Alexander Clarke. The photographers are from many places including Britain, Melbourne, Portland and a number by Daniel Clarke of Warrnambool. Daniel Clarke was one of Warrnambool’s more important photographers, operating a business for thirty years in the town. He also worked as an artist and taught art in local schools. He painted a number of versions of Tower Hill. He died in 1918 at the age of 91.This album shows a collection of photographs and cards which were important to families in the later part of the 19th century. It has artistic and historical significance, with the photographs in particular depicting many different styles of clothing and household details of the time. This record was made by a local business existing in the 1960s and early 70s, Warrnambool Recording Enterprises. This business used a local landmark, the Tower Hill State Park, as its logo and label. The recording is of the 1971 production of ‘H.M.S. Pinafore’ by the students of Warrnambool Technical College. This school was established in 1913 in Timor Street and in 1973, as Warrnambool Technical School, was relocated to Caramut Road and re-named Brauer college in 1990. The Timor Street site is now the South West TAFE College. This record is of interest as a memento both of the Warrnambool Technical College’s musical performance in 1971 and of the production of records such as this one by a local business, Warrnambool Recording Enterprises in the early 1970s. This is a 33.3 R.P.M. record with a part-image of a guitar and a yellow label in the centre with black printing and typing. It is in a paper sleeve which is tattered with the bottom section mostly missing. The cover does not appear to belong to the record. This item is part of the Giles Collection, dating back to the late Victorian era, from the 1880s to the early 1900s, in which Queen Victoria ruled England. The queen’s influence was felt throughout the world, including in the United States and Australia where Victorian values shaped society and style, especially in home décor. This period’s distinct style presents an eclectic mix of highly ornamented furniture, wallpaper, and knick-knacks. Particularly in terms of furniture, and the characteristic floral patterns and rich, contrasting colours, wall hangings that enjoyed the height of their popularity during the Victorian era were of the spiritual type with either embroidered or punched paper religious motto or bible quote. Mottoes were commonly hung high up on the wall or in an area of prominence, to remind the viewer of their important message, such as “He Leadeth Me” and “Honesty, Industry, and Sobriety.” Short and pithy, they embodied the ideals of Victorian society. Technological advances contributed to the boom of religious mottoes whereas before the Industrial Revolution home décor of this sort was handmade and therefore minimal, now consumers could purchase and fill their homes with all sorts of mass-produced ephemera goods similar to the subject item. Many of these mass-produced period pieces still exist today, often in their original frames, ceramic, enamelled or paper formats. Flagstaff maritime museum has many examples of mottoes on display that serve to reflect the period in which values of home, faith, and Christianity were very prominent in everyday Victorian society. The subject item is believed to be a "Chinese style stoneware liquor bottle used to store "Tiger Whiskey" (rice wine). These Chinese liquor bottles are made of glazed pottery known as brown stoneware and have been made throughout the centuries by many makers until well after American Prohibition. Later varieties from the mid 20th century are commonly found in the USA with the raised lettering "Federal Law Forbids Sale Or Re-use of this bottle" a sure sign of post-1934 manufacture. This example is interesting as it has a British Minton mark of two triangles on the base indicating a date of 1879 and was likely exported to Australia by Minton. These ceramic bottles virtually always have irregularities and flaws which indicate a product has been hastily manufactured, in any event, this is a fine example of a relatively common item that may have been copied by Minton and sold as a decorative domestic item for display or mass produced for storing liquor.
