Photo shows one of the A class tramcars, No. 1, originally built for The Prahran & Malvern Tramway Company in 1910-11, then transported to the isolated Footscray System in 1923-24. Most were withdrawn between 1928 and 1931. Possibly at the Ballarat Rd terminus. Also shows the crew, Conductor and Driver in MMTB Uniforms. Shows the state of the body of that the Ballarat Tramway Preservation Society recovered of the 1887 Horse Tram from the rear of a property in Anderson St Balllarat. The body was built by Duncan and Fraser in Adelaide. Photographed outside the Wendouree Parade depot, late 1887, with 16 workmen standing or lying around the tramcar. Builders Photo. Tram is lettered "BALLAARAT TRAMWAY CO LIMITED". A sign on the advertising board says "Duncan & Fraser, Builders, Ballaarat". The men around the tram are dressed in trade clothes, with aprons, including carpenters, painters and blacksmiths. A double deck horse drawn tram with single saloon. drop ends, stairs, longitudinal seats, sliding doors, wheels of cast iron, hand brakes - see notes. Originally built by Duncan & Fraser in 1887. Rebuilt by BTPS 1991. From the BTM Fleet page on the website: Built in 1887 by Duncan and Fraser for the Ballaarat Tramway Company Ltd. as a double-decked horse tramcar. One of eight cars which ran as trailers behind electric trams at times of heavy patronage, after takeover and conversion of the horse lines by the Electric Supply Company of Victoria Ltd. in 1905. Withdrawn in the late 1920's when the body shell became a residential outbuilding locally, until retrieved in 1985. Fully reconstructed to its original form and placed on a modified Melbourne saloon cable car truck. See attached notestrams, horse trams, tram 1
