The photograph looks northward over Lonsdale Street with a W class tram in the distance along with several motor vehicles. A passenger safety zone with flashing lights is in clear view along with Christmas decorations hanging from the span wires. During the 1960s, L class trams were brought back into revenue service because of a shortage of rollingstock. Because the W class tram in the distance does not appear to be fitted with side lights, this suggests the photograph is from the 1960s. Book sewn with string in 36 page sections, blank end papers, board covers with stipple paper out sides and Rexene cloth binding. Comprising plain paper end papers and 104 printed pages (52 leaves), with each sheet printed in black on feint ruled paper for recording the hours worked and other details of drivers and conductors employed by ESCo. Printed for daily use, with Day and date page headings - made out for the 1930's. Text generically printed feint ruled paper. Ticket - light brown paper, "Combined Fare Ticket" - MMTB, over printed with a red 5d, and Ticket Number A B 425191. with conditions of travel on the front. On the rear is printed in red ink is an advert for B. Matthews Pty Ltd, with head office at 102-110 Toorak Road, South Yarra, advertising a Motor Funeral Service. Dean Filgate advised 24-12-2020: Unfortunately an un-used example, from the same block that most collectors obtained one for their collection ! There are genuine used examples of similar 6d (purple overprint) tickets, however I cannot find my "files" about these: there were at least two places this type of ticket was used in the early to mid-1930s. One was a "Combined Fare Ticket to and from the City via The Coburg Electric and Brunswick Cable Cars", the other was used on the Glen Huntly lines to enable passengers to pay only once for their journey to the City, as until 1934 trams from Glen Huntly Depot did not run direct to the City - you had to transfer trams at Elsternwick or Ripponlea.trams, tramways, melbourne, tickets, mmtb, advertisements
