Photograph - Black and white of ESCo tram 8 towing a former horse tram as a trailer. Tram 8 has been fitted with windscreens and is in a one-man operation configuration with the rear entry closed off. There are passengers in the tram but there do not appear to be any in the trailer. Given that the weather blinds of tram 8 are drawn or closed, it is likely a winter day, and possibly the trailer is being used as the bicycle transfer car between the depot and the city office. The photographer is not known. The tram carries approx. 4 cubic metres of water. Built by the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board in 1934 using the cabs from a C class tram (No. 32). It was transported to the isolated Footscray system a number of times to clean the rails there. In 1961 it received additional body bracing and repainted in the diagonal black and string (light cream) stripes. The tram became 8W during 1975 as the then new Z class trams came into service. By the early 1990's the need for the tram and the other similar cars used to "scrub" the surface of the rails was no longer. The tram was stored at Malvern depot for many years before being donated to the Ballarat Tramway Museum by the Public Transport Commission in September 1999. Good detailed side view of tram, showing arrangements of blinds, seats etc. Has "Suttons Pianos" advertisement on side and "Pictures Coliseum tonight" ad on the inside middle window. Tram has been converted to have windscreens. Three ladies on the front seat section of the tramcar. Date unknown. Post 1912. Tram still has magnetic brakes. The step section by the seats has not been covered over with sheet metal to prevent people standing on the steps, as shown in later photographs. Passengers could often transfer from one service to another - eg changing from a tram to a bus, without having to pay a second fare. A transfer ticket would be issued on request and this along with the original fare ticket would be shown to the conductor or bus driver at the time of transfer. Check tickets would be issued by a conductor to record that the person had shown a periodical eg scholars ticket. This enabled passenger counting as well.
