The availability of reliable regular and frequent public transport was very important to the land speculators of the 1880s. Charles H James, an early land speculator, had large holdings in the Shire of Moorabbin at Black Rock, Sandringham and Mentone. In 1884 he was advertising the auction of 109 blocks of land at ‘Picnic Point’ in the Brighton Southern Cross.[1] He provided free railway passes and conveyance to the grounds to prospective buyers. A proposal to extend the Brighton Railway to Sandringham and Black Rock seemed remote in 1884 so James acted to resolve the lack of public transport by forming his own tramway company. From the discussion between the Council and James it was agreed that the Council would apply for permission to construct a tramway on Beach Road. By February 8, 1889 the horse drawn trams were running from Cheltenham Station to Rickett’s Point and from Sandringham Station to ‘Blackrock Corner’. Although stricken with financial problems for its entire existence, Beaumaris Tramway Company continued until 1915.Black and white image of two horses. harnessed to a double decker tram, being pulled along the tram tracks laid in the street. The Beaumaris Tramway Company commenced operations in 1887 between Sandringham and Cheltenham railway stations, and managed to survive until 1914. The tramway was operated by Charles Henry James in an attempt to sell land developed by him at Black Rock, Sandringham and Mentone. Set of 14 black and white photographs of the use of former sleeper transport car, W2 485 - see page 80 of Destination City 5th Edition for more details of the tram. Tram body being used to train emergency staff how to recover a tramcar that had been tipped over onto its side. DC5, notes it was stored at Preston workshops and later "used an instruction car to train emergency crews in the righting of the overturned trams. It was overturned several times in this role." Note: - would have been at the time, probably the only way to do this, as mobile cranes were only just starting to be developed. Truck is an AEC built Matador truck. The MMTB Timetable details the trips from Elsternwick or Point Ormond for each day of the week. The sheet records the time of the last tram, 1036pm, driver G Loft No. 2480, and the tram as X2 677 on 22-10-1960. The donor advised that the MMTB following the practice adopted for the Bourke St changeover in 1940, the MMTB chose to pull the tram service before the last advertised trip for the day. Those present to ride the last started early and rode up and down for quite a few runs, then, on one arrival at Elsternwick Station, the Inspector (known as grasshoppers or Braids) on board instructed the driver to keep going and we rode through to GH Depot without paying another fare. They noted a half-cab bus, destination 'Clifton Hill', lurking ready to take up the running. The donor reported (and as you will see from the endorsements on the timetable) “I circled the time of the last run and got the signature and badge number of the driver. Newspaper Clipping undated from an unknown newspaper about the operation of a horse tram on the South Melbourne Football ground loop during the Moomba Festival. Noted the tram has been restored in the colours of the Royal Park (Zoo) line. Has a photo of a horse drawn tram with two horses and conductor, and family dressed in either period costume or a reproduction of a very old photograph. On the rear of the Newspaper is an item about people trying to save the horses that pulled the garbage trucks in the City of Port Melbourne. This probably dates the Clipping to the mid 1950's. 1037 - Newspaper clipping from The Sun (Melbourne), April 15, 1972 in the Magazine section of the newspaper, called 'Then and Now' about the closure the following day of the Bendigo tramways. Gives an outline history of the tramway system, and two stories about the tramways, one about a driver named "Hellfire Jack" and an accident between a tram he was driving and a horse pulled dray loaded with tomatoes. Clipping from The Courier, Ballarat, 24/8/1971, about the first stage of Ballarat's changeover from trams to buses passes uneventfully yesterday with only minor difficulties being reported. Quotes Transport Regulation Boards Regional Office, Mr. A. Stott, a few parking problems with cars in bus bays, demand for timetables. Also has a quote from the director of Davis Bus Lines, about minor problems - passengers asking questions. Has a photograph of the SEC linesman dismantling overhead in Victoria St., as a trail. A gang from Melbourne will come to Ballarat early in September to pull down all the lines.
