Photograph looks southward along St Kilda Road from its intersection with City Road and Alexander Avenue, but trees obscure the view towards the Shrine of Remembrance, which may be under construction (1927-34). Tram rails and overhead can be seen turning from St Kilda Road into City Road. Several W class trams and a tramways Thornycroft "J" bus can be seen. The bus appears to be broken down with the bonnet raised with at least two employees standing beside the vehicle. Hand copied letters from the files of the Shire of Ballarat East and City of Ballaarat. 1 - dated 31/8/1880 asking for the concession to construct tramways in their district and one dated 19/10/1880 to the City of Ballaarat for the same purpose. Included is a letter dated 30/9/1880 from James Roberts, Supt trams to J. Smith recommending the type of car currently in use in Sydney as the "Yankee" car manufactured by Brill of Philadelphia. 2 - copy of letter dated 6/9/1880 about horse tram rails and support systems - signed by Jas R Davies. The article and photo report on the poor condition of roads in particular Hayden's Road and the former, short lived Victorian Railways Beaumaris - Black Rock tram line. Has two photos showing the road condition. The second photo shows sleepers from the former tram line and a badly worn road surface that had been placed on top. The item by a staff reporter likens the road to wartime battle fields.
