Newspaper clippings - date unknown. R708 leads a second R class locomotive into Bendigo Station. This entourage was known as the 'Centenary Train' and was occupied by members of the Australian Historical Society who travelled from Melbourne. Rose Series postcard P.10526 titled "Swanston St looking south, Melbourne", from just north of Collins Street. Trams in the view are S class 164 with destination West Preston set for the return journey plus W class 381? bound for Coburg Cemetery. On the left side is a cable tram in Collins Street waiting to cross Swanston Street. An early MMTB bus either a Thornycroft or Tiling Stevens is also heading south in Swanston Street with motorcycle and side car behind it. The cable tram signal is visible just to the left of the bus. This signal would continue to control all tram movements through the intersection until the insulation of modern motor traffic lights around 1929. On the left of photo is the imposing Queen Victoria building demolished in the mid 1960's to make way for the City Square. This collection contains eight archive sheets (Sheet 1 to Sheet 8) of strips of original 35mm black and white negatives of photographs taken during the 1960s and early 1970s by Robert Green, of the Bendigo State Electricty Commission of Victoria Tramways prior to their abandonment The collection also includes two archive quality sheets (Sheet A and Sheet B) of original 35mm colour slides taken by Robert Green during the same period. Sheet B also contains one slide taken by Robert's friend Keigh S King (1928-2019) who was the author of the book 'The Bendigo Tramways an illustrated history, published by the Australian Railway Historical Society Victorian Division Melbourne in February 1972; BHS Item no. 5052. The collection also includes one USB stick which contains images of all photographs described above, except for one colour slide taken by Keith S Kings. Small china pieces carrying scenic views of holiday destinations were a popular kind of souvenir during much of the 20th century. The pictures on the souvenirs ranged across natural beauty spots (beaches, waterfalls, rivers), civic buildings and monuments (town halls, war memorials), and indicators of local progress (commercial centres and occasionally even industrial sites).
