On the morning of 7 February 1966, Private John Densley, aged 20, was hit by a Viet Cong sniper’s bullets — one entered his neck and the other his abdomen, puncturing his liver. John’s condition was critical. He was a good candidate for the little-known Australians Dangerously Ill Scheme (AUSDIL), which allows for a soldier to be supported by a family member when doctors believe it will aid the soldier’s recovery. The Army had only flown next-of-kin out of Australia once before, but in Vietnam, Brigadier OD Jackson approved the idea and in Australia the Minister for the Army, Malcolm Fraser, took charge. John’s mother, Christina, had never been out of Victoria, let alone on a plane. But in less than 48 hours, she was issued with a passport and visas, had numerous vaccinations, and was flown Qantas first class to her son’s bedside in Saigon at the Australian Government’s expense. John and Christina Densley were both cared for in Vietnam by Red Cross member Hilda Zinner, who was awarded an MBE in recognition of her contribution to the welfare of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and their families. Military payment certificates, or MPC, was a form of currency used to pay U.S. military personnel in certain foreign countries. It was used in one area or another from a few months after the end of World War II until a few months after the end of U.S. participation in the Vietnam War – from 1946 until 1973. MPC utilized layers of line lithography to create colorful banknotes that could be produced cheaply. Fifteen series of MPCs were created. However, only 13 series were issued. The remaining two were largely destroyed, although some examples remain. Among the 13 released series a total of 94 notes are recognized.The 5 cent note is purple, The 10 cent note is green, the 25 cent note is red and the dollar note is mauve.
