Of Maryanne Coutts' exhibition at the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery Maryanne Coutts wrote: 'The same old story' is a curious phrase. As usual I can't tell you exactly in words what the story is,simply that I hope that this body of work evokes characters and implies the actions and interactions that engender a story. For me the story if seeking itself, trying to understand what about itself is repeatable yet malleable, rememberable yet changeable. The Triumph of Gutenberg' celebrates the seemingly ordinary by manifold ways that information is transferred and transformed. It arises from a fascination with the way a thought evolves from one idea to the next, often repeating itself, but sometime making leaps and in the dark mutating. Famed for introducing movable type and the printing press to Europe in 1450, Gutenberg enabled the mass production of books. He has consequently become a symbol for the power of the dissemination of knowledge. Vehicles for repeatability, like printing, are myriad and range from specific codes, such as DNA, to more ephemeral language systems like visual and narrative. Stories are my favourite vessels of memory, of recording. It seems that a story can have certain characteristics that allow it to be recognised as a particular story, indeed, that allow it to be repeated withing different narrations, different readings. As a visual storyteller, I have been curious about how much can change while the story remains the same, Within this visual exploration of what I consider to be a consistent story, conveyed through different media, scales, shapes, and styles, I have allowed mutations, which I hope will illuminate the repetition. In some ways this work is a direct response to Poussin's 'The Triumph of Pan', whose arrangement of figures approaches a kind of formal abstraction. As I worked through the drawing, painting and print that are in this exhibition, I have looked increasingly to more recent interpreters of that tradition like Beckmann, Layered, then, withing this story are other stories, other histories. In a metaphoric sense repeatability and mutability characterize both how the work came into being and how, being something more than paper, canvas and pigment, it can travel audiences' neural pathways as both memories of sights seen, as new thoughts ans/or as old thoughts and memories now mutated. "I am an Australian of German parents born in Persia. I was taught by Peter Rushforth, with a very strong Japanese influence. My work attempts to incorporate these four elements of my history. For form, my influence comes from Art Nouveau, or Jugendstil as it is called in Germany. Techniques are informed by pottery from Japan, China, Korea and Germany. My colours are inspired by the Australian landscape. Using the language of woodfiring, I create a personal vocabulary with new subjects, grammar and syntax, which make each pot a one-off object containing all my diverse influences." In 1964, she obtained a ceramics certificate from the East Sydney Technical College. From 1964-65, she worked with Robin Welch and Ian Sprague at Sprague's Mungeribar Pottery in Upper Beaconsfield, VIC. In 1966 she worked at the Sturt Pottery in Mittagong, NSW under Les Blakebrough. Between 1967 and 1969 Roswitha Wulff travelled overseas, spending 6 monthe with Robin Welch after his return to England and 9 months as a full-time thrower at Briglin Pottery, London, as well as working in potteries in Denmark and Germany. From 1969-70, she worked in North-West Pakistan as a research scholar for the Smithonian Institute and the University of NSW. Returning to Australia in 1970, she set up a workshop in Paddington, NSW, with the help of an Australia Council grant and taught part-time at the East Sydney Technical College and the Willoughby Workshop Art Centre. Since then she has been a lecturer and Head of Ceramics in many institutions, including the National Art School. In the 1990s she moved her studio to Botany Bay, NSW.. While working with the vessel form, she sees her pots as abstract landscapes. Recently she has also been working with wall tiles. During a residency at the Canberra School of Art in 2002, she developed tiles that looked like woodfired pillows with soft rounded rims. The Centre for Environmental Management as established in July 1995 as a strategic development initiative to consolidate the University's position as a centre for industry linked environmenttal teaching, resarech and consultancy. This book was written by Dr J. J. C. Bradfield, (John Job Crew), 1867-1943. Dr JJC Bradfield was a visionary Australian engineer who worked with enormous energy and vision to build the infrastructure which he foresaw that Sydney would need as it grew. As early as 1903 Bradfield was making the case for the Sydney Harbour Bridge, in his presidential address as President of the Sydney University Engineering Society. Bradfield’s proposal — at that stage for a cantilever bridge between Dawes Point and Milsons Point — won the committee’s support and they recommended it be accepted. However, the First World War put a stop to these plans. While a bill to authorise the project passed the lower house of the NSW parliament in 1916, it failed to pass the upper house, on the grounds that funds should not be diverted from the war effort. With the war over, in 1922 the Sydney Harbour Bridge Act was passed by the NSW Parliament. The Sydney Harbour Bridge was officially opened in 1932 after Museum and St James railway stations were built. This book was written from the story broadcast by Dr. J.J.C. Bradfield. As Commander of the Pacific Islands Regiment after WW2 he was presented with a pair of Japanese Artillery Binoculars to bring home as a War Trophy. This is in the collection also. This group of eleven (11) Decoration, Campaign and Service Medals has a very high significance as they relate to both World Wars and service recognition from 1915 through to 1946, 31 years. There is also a full set of miniatures to compliment the main medal set. The “Order of the British Empire”, “Military Cross”, Efficiency Decoration” gained over both Wars and Service are among the highest in the British Empire Awards system and therefore quite rare. The addition of 5 Mention in Dispatches adds to that rarity. The medals are in very good condition with only a small amount of tarnishing. This French Service medal was awarded to F.J. Browne for service in the First World War tending to the wounded soldiers evacuated from France on hospital ships. The places inscribed on the medal are all in the Communaupole (Urban Area) of Lens-Liévin in the Pas de Calais where the broad plain and low hills of Artois saw some of the most savage and bloody fighting of World War I.Francis James Browne died in Sydney 1963. The outside of the presentation case is maroon leather. There is a cream velvet mount for the medal and the inside of the lid of the case is lined with cream satin. "A. MAYEUR" is inscribed on both sides of the medal.
