An Australian food production company specialising in ham, bacon and smallgoods, had factories in Brisbane, Sydney and Freemantle before buying the factory of Roberts Osborne Co. in Golden Square in 1913. Over 5000 pounds was spent refurbishing the factory to bring it up to current health and safety requirements, including the installation of electricity. In addition the company established retail outlets at Bath Corner and Hargreaves Street. The company arranged for the Golden Square railway station to be used to offload stock rather than the Bendigo station. The company was well known for its "Rex" brand of goods. In Bendigo the company even sported its own cricket team. Despite the plans claims that it is a subdivision near the Richmond Bridge, Section 115 was located at what is now Camberwell Junction. While the plan only lists government roads rather than named streets, the section was located on the east side of Burke Road, stretching up the hill from the current Junction. Research on Trove, conducted by Kerry Fairbank, discovered an advertisement for unsold lots in Section 115 which clarifies the extent and location of subsequent land sales in the original section. The original article can be viewed through the link in the catalogue record. The interesting link to Kew is the reference to James Beavan as the purchaser of lots 14 and 15. The historian Gwen McWilliam has notes that a Mr Beavan changed his name from Bevan. The Bevans were descendants of the Derricks family of Kew. This subdivision plan is the earliest original map or plan in the collection which shows parts of what is now the City of Boroondara, dating from circa 1853. It provides important information for researchers on subsequent subdivisions following the original land sales in [Camberwell] Boroondara. The site, on the east side of Burke Road is a highly-significant and historic site. This is believed to be the only extant copy of the subdivision in public collections.A small plan on parchment listing 28 lots, between one and two acres each, for sale in Section 115 in the Parish of Boroondara, dating from 1853 when the portion was subdivided.Obverse: Lot 16 "Joseph Duval", Lots 14 & 15 "James Beavan". These ink wells have been used in the Warrnambool business of Swintons Pty Ltd in the mid 20th century. William and Ann Swinton migrated to Australia in 1854 and for a decade William Swinton worked as a builder and carpenter in the Warrnambool area, erecting many buildings, including the Wangoom Presbyterian Church. In 1865 he opened a store in Timor Street, Warrnambool, selling groceries, hardware, glassware and china. By 1888 the business was known as William Swinton and Sons. Branch stores were opened in Cudgee, Nullawarre, Wangoom, West Warrnambool and South Warrnambool. After William Swinton died his son became the first managing director of Swintons Pty Ltd. In 1934 the business split, with George Swinton and Sons selling clothing, furnishings and glassware and Swintons Pty Ltd selling produce, seeds and hardware. Today the Swinton family still operates a store in Timor Street, selling furniture and bedding. These ink wells are of interest as examples of the office equipment used by the firm of Swintons Pty Ltd in the mid 20th century. The current Swinton store in Timor Street is the oldest family business in Warrnambool and, with the name Swinton associated with businesses in Timor Street, it is amongst the oldest family businesses in Australia. These are two black Bakelite ink wells. They have a rectangular-shaped base with a curved top with a rectangular-shaped container at the top for holding ink. Peter’s Project is an organization set up to raise funds for a Regional Cancer Care Centre in Warrnambool. The project was initially set up by Vicki Jellie in memory of her husband, Peter, who died of cancer some years earlier. The main aim was to build a centre for the treatment of cancer in Warrnambool so that many cancer sufferers did not have to go to Geelong or Melbourne for treatment. Government and local Council funds have been obtained for the project with the general public contributing to an appeal for $5 million. This target has been reached and the building is currently being erected. This DVD is of a May 2013 Win TV telecast of interviews and information regarding the public appeal.This DVD is of some interest as it indicates the results of one person’s campaign and the community’s response. The campaign has been very successful and will have far-reaching results. This is a plastic DVD, yellow-coloured on one side and silver on the other. This is one of the earliest surveys and maps of Warrnambool harbor, Lady Bay. Being done in 1853, it shows the depths of the bay area marked in fathoms, currents and directions and areas of rocks around mouth of the Merri and the Western side of the bay as well as a large sand spit to the middle right of the beach region.. It also marks the large areas of seaweed and fuci in the outer bay area. It has the area of Pertobe Lagoon marked and shows the early tracks to the town. The engraving work was done by Tulloch and Brown, with Tulloch being one of the earliest engravers and lithographers in the state of Victoria. He arrived in Melbourne in 1849 and set up business with James Davie Brown in 1853 with Brown being a map engraver. They were awarded bronze and silver medals for their work at the Victorian Industrial Exhibition. He also worked in the vignettes on the Proeschel Map of Victoria.This map is of high historical and comparitive significance as it shows the Lady Bay area prior to the changes that have occurred in the last 160 years with the building of the breakwater. The issue regarding access to Lady Bay remains a current one. The engraver D Tulloch engraved some of the earliest scenes of the goldfields in Ballarat and as such has left a record of a very early and important era in Australian history. This Warrnambool Botanic Gardens Study and Report was funded by the National Estate Grants Program of the Australian Heritage Commission and the City of Warrnambool. It was monitored in progress by a Steering Committee consisting of representatives of the Botanic and Public Gardens Advisory Committee, the Warrnambool City Council, Friends of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens and National Estate Grants Program representatives and community representatives. The Warrnambool Botanic Gardens were first sited close to the Hopkins River in 1859. In 1869 the gardens were relocated to the present day location in Botanic Road. This plan is of some importance as it gives an overview of the history and current condition in 1995 of the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens and draws up a plan for its future development. It is useful for research and for consideration by the City Council today of policy making and further development of the gardens. This is a publication containing a master plan for the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. It has a section on acknowledgements, a summary, eight chapters, and 14 appendices. The pages are bound with plastic rings, the front cover is plasticized with an aerial photograph of the Botanic Gardens and surrounds and the back cover is lightweight cardboard. The raffle was conducted from 3 different selling points. The names on the roster are a who's who of the RSL at the time, except for two names all the sellers were WW2 era members being a list of President current, ex Presidents, Life members, Committee and notables. Portraits were taken professionally often on important occasions. As graziers from a prominent family in Redbank, Walter and Ada Ryder were well known and respected.Walter and Ada Ryder were pioneer high country graziers and cattlemen. Ada (nee Sullivan)'s family lived at Redbank. Their children were Walter, Victor, Beatrice, Vera, Lorna and Dorothy. Walter 1872 - 1954; Ada 1887 - 1983 Walter was a son of John and Annie Ryder - Walter's parents being one of the first settlers in the valley. According to Ada Ryder's notes and John Cooper's notes, Ryders were followed by Higginsons followed by Coopers in about 1867/8. Ropers held Mullindolingong Station/Mt Yorke Station, but had managers on the station before actually taking up residence about 1867/8. Whilst the Sullivans lived at Redbank (now known as Coral bank), the Ryders lived at Tawanga (correct spelling in those days) on Ryders Lane, Tawonga where John and Annie first built and lived; Walter and Ada then occupied the family home, followed by Vera Hore (nee Ryder) and the current owners Kevin and Rhonda Ryder.Black and white photo of an elderly man and woman both well dressed. On Feb 3rd 1948, the Mt Beauty State School was opened with 28 pupils in all grades up to VII. Classes began in the SECV Recreation Hall, which was converted to classrooms during the school week and returned to a recreation hall on weekends for motion pictures and social occasions for SECV workers and their families. A new school building was opened in 1950 on the current school site, with an enrolment of 170 primary and secondary students. A further extension of 4 buildings was added in 1951 with a population increase to 303 students. In May 1953, the status of the school was raised to Higher Elementary School with a total of 403 students. In 1958, the school population rose to a high of 617 students with 436 in primary and 181 in secondary. In 1964, the status of the secondary section of Mt Beauty HES was raised to a High School and was moved to separate facilities in the west of town in September 1964 Pictorial history of children who attended Mt Beauty Higher Elementary School in 1960. Many of the students would have had parents working on the Hydro-Electric Scheme in and around Mt Beauty. 'Operation Key Hold' was set up in June 1994 to establish a security network whereby (with written permission) members of the public could leave their house key at the Hospital in a safely, locked cupboard to be assessed by approved authority in case of emergency. This is similar to the emergency button (hung around the neck) which sounds an alarm at a central location and alerts appointed acquaintances for assistance - used currently (2015) Operation Key Hold was initiated in Mt Beauty for people at risk of being unable to call for assistance. The letters and notices are examples of setting up a community organisation which began in 1994 locally and became State wide later in the form of a distress alarm which worked by radio contact to a central location. Typed and hand written papers including letters and notices of varying sizes referring to the setting up of 'security network' whereby a house key is left (with written permission) at the Hospital in a safely locked cupboard. The current (2015) Mt Beauty Tourist Centre site was to be upgraded into a 'Sports Tourism Cluster' with funding from the Government and the Alpine Shire with 'In Kind' assistance from Falls Creek Resort management Board, Parks Victoria and the Local Community & Tourism Industry. This project didn't go ahead.The Mt Beauty town was handed over to the Alpine Shire in the 1960's after completion of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. These people had leases or licences giving the reader an insight into the number of people in the area and an understanding of the size of their holdings. Infrastructure is also given including shops, schools, churches etc. Presumably it was used by the Ryder family.This map gives an historical insight into the parish of Mullindolingong as it names people and the infrastructure - roads, buildings etc. as it was in 1906. This enables the reader to compare the area at the time with other times and other places and to have an understanding of the early settlers in the area.This is a very old paper or parchment map with wooden rods top and bottom. The Yackandandah and District Historical Society decided to write up a history of the school which had begun as a Church of England School from 1855 to 1872 before the commencement of the current primary school. After the State Electricity of Victoria completed the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme in 1961 the township of Mt Beauty was sold. Mount Beauty High School was proclaimed in 1963 with 213 pupils, 12 staff members. The enrolments and staff numbers increased as the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme continued to be constructed . 1. The Annual Report gives details re Accommodation, Grounds & Buildings, Equipment, Curriculum, Activities, Advisory Council, Cafeteria, Staff and Thanks. 2. In 1972, 27 teachers (names & subjects) are listed as well as other staff. The Reports are similar to that in 1970Mt Beauty High School grew quickly and then declined in numbers as the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme was constructed from the late 1940s to the 1960s. On the 2nd April 1948 the SECV noted the Eucalypts in the area of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. The Forestry Officer was an employee of the SECV and would have given advice in his area of expertise. This chart may have been used with regard to logging and enabling those involved in the identification of the trees.The last row has the heading "Localities and Remarks" and includes those found around the KHES eg. "Tawonga Gap. West Kiewa. Bogong Creek & up to 5 mile peg on Kiewa Valley Road. 7-12 Mile on Mt Buffalo Rd." Vacuum cleaners have been part of the household for many years. Beginning as simple tools blowing the dust to the current sucking up the dust and being powered by electricity. From the shape of a barrel to those that stand upright, from being fitted onto a 'sled' to those with wheels and from heavy to light.Used by a resident in the Kiewa Valley Electrolux cannister steel vacuum with leather handle at the top, the electric socket (and cut power cord attached) at one end and the cloth covered hose at the other end. Two steel extension handles, hose and cord works. Parts with combination dusting and upholstery tool and hardwood floor dust mop and refrigerator crevice tool. This book provides in chronological order the development of the Kiewa Hydro-electricity scheme from the first concept (1911) to final construction work (1961). It covers the first attempt to utilise the power of the Victorian Alps water system. It started from a private syndicate and developed to the current State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The incentive for the Hydro scheme was to make money and not as an alternative to the carbon producing coal fired power plants. These coal fired power plants were increasing in numbers to service an ever increasing demand made by population expansion, especially in cities and large rural settlements. This demand spiraled up after World War II when there was a tremendous spike in immigration numbers due to refugees and displaced persons in Europe. The ability to utilise the untapped water provided by the winter snow fields, for a higher yield in electricity, was a powerful incentive to overcome the physical hardships in this remote Alpine region. Future power requirements may initiate the re-installation of the other two power stations(Pretty Valley and Big Hill) covered in original Scheme. This publication not only covers the development of the Kiewa Valley region with respect to population (within a socio-economical framework) but also the subtle but yet strong physical changes of a relatively pristine alpine region. The demands that an ever growing regional population places on the environment is clearly documented in print and black and white photographs. The working and living conditions of those who constructed and gave life to this hydro scheme is well documented in this book. It may be viewed as spartan now but was relevantly good at that moment in time, especially for those workers fleeing a devastated European environment. The successful planning and consideration to minimising any intrusion upon the natural alpine forests and high plains can viewed as an example (compared to the Tasmanian Hydro schemes) of how future hydro schemes (an inevitable requirement) will proceed. Most rural towns (in the early 1900s) were built by unencumbered rural based citizens, with the exception of Mount Beauty and Falls Creek. These two settlements were brought into life by a State (Victorian) Authority for a specific function and program. They were a gated community, that is, only open to construction workers involved with the hydro scheme. All facilities within these communities were provided by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The impact on the social, financial and individual independency of the community, by the transition from the S.E.C .environment to one of local government (Shire of Bright), had in some cases a severe impact.This hard covered book has a green cover with pictures on the front and back covers. The P.S Pevensey was built in 1910 in Moama by the Permewan Wright Co. Initially she was a barge, called the Mascotte, but by May 1911 she had been converted into the P.S.Pevensey. Initially the P.S.Pevensey was used as for transporting wool from the Murrumbidgee River Stations. In 1932 the P.S Pevensey carried the largest load of wool ever from the Murrumbidgee River. This record was 2600 bales of wool. She was destroyed by fire at Koraleigh Landing later in 1932, but was soon rebuilt.By 1939 she was running a regular service between Morgan and Mildura. By 1958 it was reported that she was moored above Renmark and not working. In 1967 she was sunk by vandals. In 1968 she was bought by Bill and Norm Collins. They refloated her, restored her and moored her at Mildura. The City of Echuca bought the P.S. Pevensey from the Collins Family in 1973, for $20,000. The P.S. Pevensey came to Echuca Wharf in July 1973 along with Kevin Hutchinson OA., a shipwright who stayed with the P.S. Pevensey for the rest of his life. The P.S Pevensey currently works as a Tourist paddle steamer taking cruises from the Echuca Wharf every day. (Ref. Parsons, R. "Ships of the Inland Rivers. P. 116.)This photograph is significant because it shows the wharf in 1973, being converted into a Tourist precinct. The roof of the cargo shed is being repaired. The P.S Pevensey is tied up to the wharf and looks as if it needs more repairs. The buildings in the background are still used as business venues. The Shamrock Hotel can be seen in High Street. The PS Success was built in Moama in June 1977 by GB Air for Westwood & Air. It was built to tow barges of cargo along the Darling and Murray rivers, as well as running as a passenger boat from Swan Hill to Mildura during 1915-16. The Success was the last paddlesteamer actively working on the river when she performed several rescue voyages to flood bound properties along on the Darling River, rescuing sheep and a large cargo of wool. The vessel ended her working life in 1957 and was put up on the bank at Ned's corner, 80km west of Mildura. In 1996, the Pollard family donated the vessel to the Riverboat Historical and Preservation Society of Mildura with plans to restore her to her former glory. This project became increasingly difficult for the dedicated volunteers to handle and the Port of Echuca took ownership in 2009 in the hopes that further restoration work can be done at the Port. The Succes is currently on static display at the northern end of the Port of Echuca. The PS Success had a long, colourful history towing barges on the Murray River and in particular in the Mildura, Wentworth and Ned's Corner regions. She was the last paddlesteamer to be working on the river system right up until the 1956 floods towing the barge Vega, where at one point both boat and barge smashed into trees on a wild, uncontrolled journey downstream where she was damaged and later lay stranded on Ned's Corner.Composite timber hull, 3-inch red gum planks on angle iron frames. The post World War II migration of European "snow skiiers" into Australia combined with the construction of Hydo Electricity Schemes in both the N.S.W.and Victorian Alps regions, opened up these winter snow areas to a greater influx of tourists and holiday adventurers interested in "winter" sports. The ability to project, on a global scale, skiing facilities of international standards to those in the northern hemisphere during their summer has opened up the Australia ski resorts and their facilities to a much greater winter sport orientated population. These cross country skis were purchased by a member of the Bogong Ski Club and were part of a bulk ski stock consignment from Finland in 1966/67. They were introduced into the Victorian Alps to encourage skiers to take up cross country skiing both at Falls Creek and Mount Buller. This initiative spurred on the now annual 42 kilometre cross country "Kangaroo Hoppet" race at Falls Creek. This race is currently the biggest cross country snow skiing race in Australia. These snow skis were made in Finland. They are wooden (hickory) skis and made from four strips (glued and shaped) pieces of wood that are not laminated. There is a painted blue flash on the top of the skis that extends the full length of the skis. The face of the underside of the skis is flat and is coated in black Stockholm tar. Glider or grip wax was applied onto this base. The top body of the skis is tapered from shoe position to both front and back tips.Tapered curvatures from foot radiating to all sides provides the required aerodynamics. This tester was used between 1950 and 1980's. As part of the Occupation, Health and Safety requirements, equipment used to monitor the performance of electricity producing generators, regularly, hand held testers were used to check the insulation and the "earth" pin were up the the required operational levels. As the generators and their ancillary monitoring equipment was spread over a large area and cumbersome to service small hand held devices were required. These had to always be safe for the user to operate. A selected range of high quality meters were recalibrated every two years in the Meter and Calibration Laboratory at Yarraville(near Melbourne) This meter is very significant to The Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme because it was an integral part of maintaining the electricity producing water driven generators of the power stations. The reason why this meter was so essential is that provided the safety check on equipment used to monitor each Hydro Generator that they were complying within the grid network parameters. Grid parameters are set so that if there is an electrical fault on the system, that fault can be attended to with a very small change in the output stability of each generator. It is essential that the voltage of the network remain within the set limits. Generators are at Dartmouth, Mackay, Clover, West Kiewa, Yarrawonga, Cain Curran and three Power Stations in the Thornton area.This hand driven current generator produces 500 volts by winding the handle(on funnel curved side) to keep the voltage constant(one minute per test). The whole body is made from caste aluminium. One of the functions of this meter is to test the isolation resistance of any equipment being tested. This is to see if that equipment is safe to handle(no electrical shocks). The second function is to test the earth pin of any portable electrical equipment. The turn key on one side can direct which function is required(marked insulation or continuity). On the top side(enclosed in a glass fronted marked scale) is a continuity scale(top) and an insulation scale(bottom). This is covered , when not in use by "flip up" lid with manufacturer's details and name of the instrument. Opposite the winder are two screw tight knobs. One marked earth(left side) and one marked line(right side). On the top and next to the glass windowed scales in a post manufacture SEC Vic equipment equipment ID number.
