Portrait of King George V (Duke of Kent) 1935Presented to the 6th Battalion Royal Melbourne Regiment by an Allied Battalion the Royal Fusiliers as a toke of friendship and esteem. This Portrait would have hung pride of place in the officers mess from 1935-? The portarait is also signed by the artist, an M.C reciepient, as well as the the reigning monarch, and colonel in chief of the presenting unit. It is supported by a letter from the colonel of the Presenting unit, Maj Gen Hill CB.CMG.DSO, and as such is hghly provinanced Colour print of His Magesty King George V wearing the unaiform of the the Royal Fusilliers, Read coat with decorations and blue sash under a navy blue over coat. The print is signed in lead pencil by the artist and by King George V on the lower edge. A regimental badge is present in the top right of the image. The picture is framed in a pewter coloured frame with ornate leaf mouldings in the corners. On the lower edge of the frame is a plaque which states " From the Colonel and Officers of the Royal Fusilliers 1935" Also included with the portait is a letter on Royal Fusiliers letterhead dated October 23 1935 " From - Maj-Gen. W.P.H. Hill. CB. CMG. DSO., Colonel. Rodaughan, 26 Old Lilydale Road, Ringwood East in response to requests for information associated with Lilydale Railway Line history.The line from Hawthorn to Camberwell opened on 3 April, 1882, Camberwell to Lilydale opened on 1 December, 1882. Box Hill, Ringwood and Croydon stations opened on 1 December, 1882. Croydon was originally called Warrandyte station until the name was changed to Croydon on 1 August, 1884. Nunawading was originally called Tunstall and opened on 4 June, 1888. The name was changed to Nunawading on 1 November, 1945.

Our collection includes a number of documents on the history of the line including a film Heritage on the Line produced in 1992 and Down the line to Upfield by Jon Saul and Wendy Moore. 3rd edition 1994 and Northern Suburbs Transport Plan prepared by the Upgrade Upfield Coordinating Committee 1994. / The Upfield Line Heritage Study by Andrew Ward (1990) can be found on the Merri-bek Council website. / The Lonie Report prepared by the State Government in 1988 recommended conversion of all or part of the line to light rail. Some proposals involved replacing the Sydney Road trams with light rail, freeing up the rail reservation for a freeway, while others proposed installing the light rail on the rail reservation from Upfield to Park Street, where the line would divert to join the Royal Parade tram line. / Our collection includes documents on the community campaign to save the line from the Cain Government in 1989-90 and the Kennett Government in 1992-93. The Save the Upfield Line Campaign was set up and composed of local residents. We have a collection of their minutes and campaign materials. Brunswick Council was also actively involved in campaigning to save the line and set a Council and community committee to work on this. We also have minutes of its meetings and some Council reports on the issue. / In 1995 the State Government finally agreed to retain and upgrade the line. Added to VC EJ July 2025

Several items were given by a seafarer, Mr Nicholas Garlick (1926-2009) into the care of Father Brady who retired from St Pauls Cathedral, Melbourne in 2018. Father Brady later donated the collection of objects, documents and an extensive collection of cruise ship menus (1937-end of 20thC) to the Mission via the intermediary William Hastie, volunteer at the Mission for Seafarers. This bronze sculpture of King George V was created to commemorate the King’s 25th year on the throne. It shows the King wearing the full robes of the Order of the Garter. Sculptor Victor Greenhalgh modelled the artwork in Ballarat and sent in to Italy for casting in bronze. The work is set on bluestone with a granite backdrop and features a drinking fountain and a seat. This menu appears to have been produced for the 1947 Maiden Voyage of the S.S. Athenic travelling between London and New Zealand via Curacao and Panama. This was possibly the first voyage on this vessel early in his career for engineer G. W. Duncan and therefore a souvenir. The commander of the vessel was D. Aitchinson. Also of interest given that the UK was still very much governed by post WW2 rationing, is the range of food available for the farewell dinner listed.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources.
