The competition was to increase awareness of the pioneering of Phillip Island. 155 entries were received and winners were compiled in the booklet. Art competition winners were Open- Frances Reith and Maree Chaston. Secondary- Neil McRae and Shannon Condick. Primary- Laurie Chisholm and Paul Matthews. Essay Competition winners were Open- Patsy Hunt and Audrey Nicol.. Secondary- Judy Nicol and Cameron Ashe. The Ventnor School had its beginning in the Ventnor Hall, which was built by parents of the children. It was opened on 5th May 1915 and Miss Ruby Bright was the first Head Teacher. Later an area was purchased from Mr Thomas Jones and a new school was erected at a cost of £790.2.6. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.Two photos: a) Two graves - William Jenner & Elsie Myra Jenner. William died Oct 1957 aged 73 and Elsie died April 1968 aged 82. - William Raymond Jenner - son of William & Elsie - died Oct 1951 aged 42 years. b) Close up of William & Elsie grave. William had a farm at Ventnor, grew onions and chicory and was always willing to help out or lend any farming machinery. William was a member of the Ventnor School committee and Ventnor Hall committee. The first church services were held at the McHaffie home in Ventnor once a fornight, the Preacher coming over in a whaleboat from the mainland. Land was reserved for the Church in 1869 and the first services were held in the new church in 1870. The Parish Hall was built in 1935. The short history in the pamphlet was based on material collected from Minute Books, Preachers' Books, Registers of Services, Documents and memories of those who have been closely associated with the Church over many years.A pamphlet produced by the St Philips Church of England for the Centenary - 1870 - 1970. Goulter Prahran. The sepia photographs depict people of different ages.
