... Victoria Journal 1857-1867... diary entries. The entries date from 1857 to 1867. Victoria ...This diary relates to the property Kenilworth which is situated near Cavendish, 16 miles from Hamilton on the Wannon River. It was taken up by Thomas Norris in 1839 and originally carried 800 cattle and 20000 sheep on 63000 acres. By 1858 it was in the hands of John Mackersey and Thomas Bostock. In 1859 it belonged outright to John Mackersey who was there until 1870. He was considered a worthy son of a Presbyterian minister and was well regarded in the district for his contributions in church, sport and sheep breeding... However he did not do well and lost the property before going to New Zealand in 1870.This diary has detailed entries over a number of years which provides an insight into life in the 1860’s. It has a significance for Warrnambool as John Mackersey and Augustus Bostock were at one stage business partners.Hard green cover with gold lettering. 534 pages of facsimile copied diary entries. Booklet, Beyond the Point, 2007
... of Irish ancestor, John Logan, Hopkins Point, Warrnambool, Victoria..., Hopkins Point, Warrnambool, Victoria, 1857-2007, by Margaret ...This book was written in 2007 by Margaret McOrist to mark the 150th anniversary of the arrival in the Warrnambool area of John Logan. It is a sequel to a 1991 book, ‘Clotted Cream and Mangels’ which told the story of John Logan and his wife Mary Gardner. They lived at Hopkins Point, Warrnambool and the book, ‘Beyond the Point’ tells the story of the Logan descendants. When the farm land was sub-divided and sold the nearby beach was named ‘Logans Beach’. This book is of considerable interest as it tells the story of the descendants of important early settlers, John Logan and Mary Gardner. The area where they first settled is now of major interest as Logans Beach (named for the Logan family) is the well-known whale watching area. Southern Right Whales return to this beach each year and the females calve and remain up to three months at this beach, making it an important ‘whale nursery’. This is a soft cover book with black plastic ring binding and clear plastic sheets covering the front and back paper covers. The front cover has a reproduction of an 1891 map of Warrnambool and district with the title of the book and other information superimposed on the map. The back cover is black. The book has 101 pages and contains information on the Logan families who lived at Tooram in Allansford and their descendants. There are many black and white and colour photographs, diagrams, maps and family trees. Front Cover: ‘Beyond the Point, 150 years since the arrival of Irish ancestor, John Logan, Hopkins Point, Warrnambool, Victoria, 1857-2007, by Margaret McOrist’. john logan and mary gardner, hopkins point, logans beach, tooram, history of warrnambool -

Or from such of its close vicinities as might be supposed to affect the direction or richness of the lead. This system tended greatly to equalise the uncertainties of deep sinking. It also enabled those who had spare means to invest them wit probable advantage in these shares, and this furnish the requisite capital to their poorer neighbours, by which these were in a position to meet the heavy preliminary expenses of deep sinking . . . Dr Joseph Toscano The Victorian Land ...The Victorian Land Convention, ''A Vote, A Farm, A Rifle'' 15th July - 6th August 1857 Direct Democracy In Action 1857 - 2007. This booklet was published to mark the 150th anniversary of the Victorian Land Convention. The Land Convention, held in Melbourne in 1857 opposite Victoria's newly built Parliament House, was a far more revolutionary act than the 1854 Ballarat rebellion. The effects of the Land Convention influenced parliamentary debate for nearly two decades.
