The corps was born just after Federation, though Australian nurses had already served in the Boer War. Since then, whenever Australia has fought, the nurses have been there to treat the wounded. The Australian Army Nursing Service Reserve, the original title of the Corps, got underway in 1902 as a voluntary body supplying trained nurses in times of emergency.
