Pte W Shirley served with 13 Battalion during WW1. Whilst an inpatient at Lady Davidson Home ex Pte Shirley commuted to Ku-Ring-Gai Chase to cut the Sphinx out of rock as a Memorial to his comrades. The time taken for the project was approximately 1 year 6 months.This is a project of 5756 Pte W Shirley 13 Battalion AIF. The Memorial is dedicated 'To my Glorious Comrades of the AIF'2 x black and white photographs of the Sphinx War Memorial, Ku-Ring-Gai Chase, NSW. The Melbourne Olympic games were mainly conducted at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and were one of the most successful in terms of medals for Australia. Among the medal winners were Shirley Strickland, Betty Cuthbert in Athletics and Dawn Fraser and Murray rose in swimming. The games commenced in November 1956. The games were noted for the 19 Hungarian athletes who applied for asylum with their home country undergoing upheaval at the time. The Melbourne games also enjoyed the advent of television with the technology having recently been introduced to the country. These badges note ten of the many athletes who competed for Australia in 1956. These items are of social significance and interest. This is the twenty-first key presented to Ronald Arthur Edwards in August 1935. The celebration, held at his parents home in Husband Road, Forest Hill, was attended by many well known local people who signed his birthday key. Ronald Edwards was the youngest child of Arthur and Martha Edwards. In 1929 aged 15 he contracted poliomyelitis and became an invalid. Radio was a key way of communicating with the blind and low vision community across Victoria, ensuring that news and information could be shared quickly and publicly. Some centres raised funds to develop their own studios, with local content programs, based in AFB offices. Mildura began 3MPH in 1998 as the result of major fundraising for equipment and support from AFB.
