Wallpaper fragment from an early workman's cottage in Weller St, Geelong West built in 1854. This property was refurbished following its sale in the early 1990s. Over time many layers of wallpaper had been pasted to the original paper. The wallpaper was damp and hanging off the walls. It was removed to reveal packing case 'slats' on the stud wall. When the skirting board was removed the original wallpaper was revealed. Although not a Warrnambool artefact, the Weller St property was owned by a local resident. Overall, the wallpapers in the building are a rare surviving example of interior decorations used in educational institutions in Australia. They reflect changing tastes and fashions throughout the twentieth century and serve as evidence of wallpapers that were available and in use in a regional area of Victoria from the 1920s to the 1970s.The wallpapers present in Rooms 143 and 148 hold historic significance as a rare surviving example of interior decoration within Victoria during this period within an educational institution in Australia. They reflect changing tastes and fashions throughout the twentieth century. Additionally, these wallpapers serve as evidence of the styles that were available and used in a regional area of Victoria from the 1920s to the 1970s. Of particular importance are the four layers of wallpaper remaining on the south wall of Room 148, as they represent the most complete sequence of wallpapers used during these fifty years. The wallpapers in Room 143 are also significant; they not only provide further examples, including frieze papers, borders, and wall body papers, but they also contextualise the assortment of wallpapers used in both rooms. To a lesser extent, the wallpapers found in Rooms 144 and 146 offer additional context for the collection of significant wallpapers utilised across this suite of rooms.Wallpaper samples found in the upper six rooms of the front wing of the Creswick Campus Library. The upper-level rooms of the library comprise six spaces, including a WC, a stair landing, and a short hall. Title of property shows the property was owned by Emily Henty in 1894. " Charman Dene" was Alfred Herbert and Edith Blanche Holdsworth’s holiday house. The property was sold following Alfred Herbert’s death in 1929. Mrs Champion later owned the property. Charmandene Guest House was located on the beach front along Lover's Walk. Original design by Dorothy Leviny, aged 25, while she was a student at the Bendigo School Of Mines under the tutelage of Arthur T. Woodward. Woodward, who had come to Australia from Britain, was a renowned proponent of the Arts and Crafts Movement in Australia during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Dorothy Leviny, along with two of her sisters, entered a number of items in the First Australian Exhibition of Women's Work, Melbourne, 1907, and was awarded second prize for one of her wallpaper designs. Dorothy Leviny was the ninth child born to noted colonial silversmith and jeweller, Ernest Leviny, and his wife, Bertha (nee Hudson).This original wallpaper design by Dorothy Leviny is one of few that remain in existence from the early twentieth century showing the influence of the British Arts and Crafts Movement in Australia.Original wallpaper design made by (Bertha) Dorothy Leviny painted in watercolour. This wallpaper section is from the original Warrnambool Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters built in the late 1850s on Middle Island, and the building was moved to Flagstaff Hill in 1871-72. The wallpaper was salvaged from Assistant Keeper's residence (Shipwreck Museum) during heritage works in 2023, to upgrade the ageing exhibition space in the historic building.The wallpaper section is significant for its association with the Warrnambool Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. It is also significant as an example of the paper, method of displaying and pattern on the paper, an indication of the materials and patterns available to decorate homes in those times.Wallpaper sample, irregular shape. One such property was ‘Reno’, which once stood on the east side of St John’s Parade. Its earliest recorded owner was the architect Samuel Cocking who lived there from c.1865 until his death in 1888. The original landholding was bordered by Cotham Road, Glenferrie Road, Wellington Street, and Charles Street. The southern portion of this land included a fine orchard, with many imported trees. The old summer house, at first in the orchard, was later removed to the house garden. The MMBW Detail Plan No.1576 (1904) shows the remaining portion of the original land holding, including a semi-circular pathway at the front, and garden features such as an aviary, a fountain and grotto, and a fernery. None of these are apparent in photographs dating from the 1960s, where the garden, which once included rare plants provided by Baron Von Mueller, surrounds the cottage in a tangled frenzy. Part of a collection of historic wallpapers collected by Phyllis Murphy, most of whose wallpapers were donated to the collection of Historic Houses Sydney. This wallpaper sample, annotated and encased in mylar was used by Phyllis for educational purposes, and donated by her son to Villa Alba Museum's collection in 2025.Mid 19th century architectural frieze wallpaper representing a cornice.
