Print, James Jacques Joseph Tissot, Berthe, 1883
... wangaratta art gallery...Wangaratta Art Gallery 56 Ovens Street Wangaratta high ...James Tissot is most famous for his artwork that depicts the European bourgeois society of the late 19th century. This societal period is often referred to as La Belle Époque, where affluent bourgeoisie living created a complicated mode of manners and dress. This subject matter used in his art made Tissot popular with the bourgeois society, however it made him unpopular with critics who deemed his works as of loose morals due to his subject matter. Tissot’s art style of Realism also put him at odds with his fellow artists and friends such as Degas and Manet who were greats of the European Impressionist movement. This print was made using the printmaking technique of etching, which allowed Tissot to make multiply prints of a particular artwork to sell on mass at a more affordable price to the general population who wished to emulate the bourgeoisie lifestyle of the wealthy.RealismRural City of Wangaratta Collection, Purchased with funds from the Wangaratta Art CouncilA rectangular portrait etching of a 19th century European young lady dressed in her best attire seated in a fashionable manner, printed in black ink on white paper. Textile, Paul Yore, Map, 2012
... wangaratta art gallery...Wangaratta Art Gallery 56 Ovens Street Wangaratta high ...I see my work with textiles as always a negotiation of both the poetic and the political. A medium often relegated to the realm of ‘craft’, I see working with wool as a subtly subversive methodology, and an opportunity to engage in socio-political critique. As a laborious yet cathartic craft, the delicately feminine familiarity and domestic warmth of my hand-sewn tapestries allows me to open up and question traditional notions of masculinity through the enactment of a highly personalized queer ritual. Furthermore, wool carries with it frontier pastoral associations of early colonial expansion, and it is in this context that the work Map, which is based on the ethnographic mapping of indigenous language groups, was envisioned.contemporaryWangaratta Art Gallery Collection. ... wangaratta art gallery...Wangaratta Art Gallery 56 Ovens Street Wangaratta high ...This etching by British engraver Arthur Willmore was created from Russian born artist Nicholas Chevalier’s original watercolour landscape of Bontharambo, Wangaratta (Chevalier’s watercolour is held in the collection of the National Library of Australia). Chevalier moved to Australia during the Colonial period and is famous for his landscape paintings, which were most commonly commissioned by wealthy landowners or merchants wanting to record their material success. Bontharambo is a historic property located in Wangaratta which was made famous by pastoralist Joseph Docker who took up the Bontharambo run in 1838 and has remained in the family since. The historic homestead on the property was built between 1857-1859 and was designed by architect Thomas Watts.ColonialWangaratta Art Gallery CollectionA rectangular landscape etching of the homes on Bontharambo station printed in black ink on off-white paper.Obverse: N. Batik has a long history in the world and is believed to have originated on the island of Java in Indonesia. The designs traditionally used in batik are imbued with meaning and powerful symbolism to reflect the culture and beliefs of the place where it was made and for whom it was made for. Upton has instilled her piece such meaning and symbolism by depicting eucalyptus leaves and gumnuts which evokes a sense of belonging and pride.Rural City of Wangaratta Collection, purchased with funds from the Wangaratta Art CouncilA rectangular design of gumnuts on silk created through the batik technique using natural dyes in shades of red, brown, and greenwangaratta art gallery, christine upton, batik, gumnuts, flora, australian flora, textile -

Painting, Lorna Chick, Up Where The Eagles Nest, 1969
... wangaratta art gallery...Wangaratta Art Gallery 56 Ovens Street Wangaratta high ...Lorna Chick was a local artist whose works depict farming and community landscapes, which reflected her main occupation of living and working on the family farm with her husband and two sons. Chick was a naïve artist who used the aerial viewpoint as a constant device in her landscapes. Her naïve art style allowed her to distort the common notion of landscape paintings being horizontal viewpoints, bringing a different understanding to her artwork.naïve artRural City of Wangaratta Collection, purchased with funds from the Wangaratta Art CouncilA rectangular aerial landscape oil painting of a farming community overlooked by eagles painted using vibrant coloursObverse: LORNA CHICK ©wangaratta art gallery, lorna chick, landscape, farming, eagles, north east victoria, painting -

Textile, John Parkes, Conflagration, 2017
... wangaratta art gallery...Wangaratta Art Gallery 56 Ovens Street Wangaratta high ...John Parkes avoids technology. This work expects the viewer to understand the importance of the hand and time… The blanket and the apron were gifted by friends in Germany. The apron was worn by Helen in her studio practice as a jeweller. The blanket was a find in the cellar of their Munich apartment. The red moleskin cloth was an OP shop find and originally a eucalyptic green. This cloth was discharged and overdyed. Cloth will often sit around the house, unattended, until ideas germinate. Is “Art” about “Art” or about the “Artist”?... There is a Buddhist notion of not writing in the first person, in that the Ego is not employed. There is a Japanese tradition “Boro” in which cloth is not discarded but repaired. These three cloths are now one.Wangaratta Art Gallery Collection - Winner WCTA 2017A square handsewn textile that features a white apron that has red running stitch squares, holes, hand paint stains across with initials in blue thread sewn in the bottom right corner of the apron which is in the center of the work. A brown wool cloth that features rows of white running stitches and red embroidery patches borders the apron, which is bordered by strips of red patterned fabric that has been dyed and features lines of red running stitches.wangaratta art gallery, textile, wcta, john parkes -

Textile, Kate Just, SAFE Banner, 2014
... wangaratta art gallery...Wangaratta Art Gallery 56 Ovens Street Wangaratta high ...HOPE & SAFE presents the material results of Kate Just’s two recent public banner projects in the UK and Melbourne responding to violence against women and current media coverage of this issue. Referencing and reviving moments in feminist history in which collective action and craftwork were deployed to enact change, HOPE & SAFE invokes a utopian reimagining of women’s safety and agency within the urban environment. In 2013, Just travelled around the UK with her KNIT HOPE Project. It involved an invitation to individuals and communities to publicly join her in knitting a night-reflective fluorescent yellow banner that spells the word HOPE in silver block letters. Later, various HOPE walks were taken in public at night with it. Bearing the artist’s daughter’s name, the resulting HOPE Banner manifests the artist’s wish for a brighter future for women broadly and for her own child specifically. Materially and conceptually, the banner entwines dualities of male and female, public and private, individual and collective. The uniquely patterned individual pieces refer to the work of many hands, joined together to form a seamless whole. The durability of the builder’s line and the high-vis reflective material, which is worn by construction workers, police and cyclists, imbues the banner with a level of visibility and authority. The singular large scale photograph HOPE Walk (Leeds) extends these complexities, documenting a moment in which police on horseback, donning coordinated yellow and silver jackets, asked if they could join the ‘protest.’ On return from the UK in early 2014, Just undertook the KNIT SAFE Project in Melbourne. It involved the communal crafting of a sister banner, a night reflective black and silver ‘blanket’ that spells SAFE. The more sombre SAFE Banner operates as a shield or soft monument constructed in the shadow of recent high profile violent deaths of women in Melbourne including Jill Meagher, Tracey Connelly and Fiona Warzywoda. The photograph SAFE Walk (Melbourne) captures a small group of banner holders quietly interacting with each other in the warm glow of a street lamp, projecting an almost fictional ideal of collective resistance to the harsh realities of the world. Also presented in the exhibition is the book HOPE SAFE, documenting the projects in their entirety and featuring an in-depth essay by art critic and historian Dr Juliette Peers. Photograph by Simon Strong. Wangaratta Art Gallery Collection. Textile, Patrick Snelling, 8.9, 0ct 2010 - Mar 2011
... wangaratta art gallery...Wangaratta Art Gallery 56 Ovens Street Wangaratta high ...The textile traditions and aesthetics of Japan have always influenced my textile practice and I have created a construct that reflects the way this work has been developed and assembled. The grouping of hand and digitally printed textile hexagons, represent a meta language of patterns and techniques. There are classical Japanese motifs and very contemporary images that have been captured digitally from my visits to Tokyo and Kyoto. My combining the old and the new forms of textile printing, I am creating a traditional and contemporary conversation between processes. This work was started in October 2010, it was put aside for a few months and then I re-imagined it again with the tragic news coming out of Fukushima and Miyagi provinces.Wangaratta Art Gallery Collection. Her art style in Nocturne can be described as contemporary impressionism, as the use of a tonal colour palette and the style of brushstrokes are impressionistic while the style of the landscape depiction is contemporary. ... wangaratta art gallery...Wangaratta Art Gallery 56 Ovens Street Wangaratta high ...McDonald Smith is famous for paining in the tradition of tonal impressionism, with most of his works painted in oil. This influence of the European Impressionist art style is clearly seen in his artwork Flower Study. The notion of light, an impressionist theme, is depicted by the use of a tonal colour palette and varied brushstrokes. The depiction of a Japanese dragon vase hints at the art aesthetic of Japonisme in the European Impressionist movement, a possible nod of respect to the movement by McDonald Smith.Rural City of Wangaratta Collection, Wangaratta Art Prize 1997.A rectangular still life painting of a bunch of flowers in a vase painted in oil using shades of white, red, green, blue, and yellow.Obverse: P McDONALD SMITH (bottom right corner)wangaratta art gallery, painting, still life, paul mcdonald smith -
