The Young Workers' Patriotic Guild was formed in Victorian schools in 1916. Each child who raised one pound 'by personal productive effort' received a certificate. The money was used for the war effort. This certificate was presented to Eileen McDougall, a pupil of Lochend School, in 1917 in recognition of becoming a member of the Young Workers' Patriotic Guild.This item reflects the war efforts of Victorian children during WW1.A coloured certificate framed in dark plain wooden frame. The certificate is from the Young Workers' Patriotic Guild, and includes mythical representations of 'Justice' and 'Peace' at the top, together with a female face wearing a laurel wreath. Below the banner headline are two young girls, one shown knitting a black and red sock, and the second holding what appears to be a hammer and a block of wood. The certificate commemorates the work done by a pupil at a Victorian school as a member of the Guild. It is dated 1917, and signed by the Minister of Education, the Director of Education, and the Headmaster of Kennington school. The name of the designer appears at the bottom of the certificate; it appears to be Harold Herbert. Laurel leaves and berries, and the initials 'EVD' [Education Department Victoria] appear at the base of the certificate. The Chapel of Saint Peter was dedicated on September 6, 1917 by His Grace the Archbishop of Melbourne. The total sum necessary for the construction of the chapel was collected by the L.H.L.G and the chapel stands as a tribute to the honoured memory of the officers and men of the Mercantile Marine who lost their lives in the Great War. Note that the building was erected to commemorate fallen Mercantile Marines in the Great War before the war was concluded. This shows that the war and death toll thus far was significant enough at this point that it was having a serious impact on Australian society. This file contains three items concerning Sir John Monash. 1/A two-page letter distributed at a rare book week event on the 22/07/2014 to the Glen Eira Historical Society from Michael Headberry. The letter requests support for the John Monash Sculptural Commission by the Monash Pioneers, who are seeking to erect a bronze full figure portrait of Sir John Monash, Monash University’s namesake. Monash is connected to the city of Glen Eira, as Monash University has a campus in Caulfield and there are a number of streets named after him. The letter discusses the life of Monash and his many achievements. Details in another two pages are also given of the statue to be erected and there are two photos of a wax model of the proposed statue; plus a donation form. 2/An article by Dana McCauley dated 17/05/2015 entitled ‘Push to rename Ports’ about Caulfield lawyer and Liberal Kate Ashmor. The article discusses how she wants the electorate of Melbourne Ports to be named after Sir John Monash due to him being one of the most prominent Victorian Jews. There is a photo of Ashmor in fron of a statue of Monash. Newspaper not known. 3/An article from the Leader on the 30/06/2015 entitled ‘Exhibit’s unique view on Jews in WW1’. The author is unknown. The article discusses an exhibition at the Jewish Museum of Australia about the social history behind the Jewish support of the war effort. Many events like carnivals were held by the Red Cross to raise funds for the war effort and entertain the patients.This badge is a reminder of the Community support for injured soldiers when they returned from WW1 conflict and were hospitalized at Kooyong Military Hospital Caulfield 1914 - 1948 This badge was displayed at the GECC 'Wounded Soldier WW1 1914-1918 Exhibition" 2016 at Glen Eira Town Hall Caulfield A small tin button, with pin attachment at the back. The button was produced and sold as a fund-raiser for the Kooyong Military Hospital during the World War1, 1914-18, at that organisation's Carnival held on March 18th 1916. The front of the button is white with a blue perimeter. A copy of the City of Caulfield's Coat-of- Arms and the words, City of Caulfield, is written on the front of the button, as is the date 18th March 1916. Both the above are written in red. Elizabeth Nelson on eMelbourne has written that: "War Savings Streets were street-based savings groups that participated in the national war savings campaign during World War II. In May 1940 the Australian Government launched its Savings Certificates scheme which encouraged civilians to invest in the national war effort. Organisers of the savings campaign targeted Melbourne's suburbs individually with the aim of enlisting street savings groups. Each street group had a volunteer secretary who regularly sold war savings certificates to, and collected money from, other residents. This item forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Together it forms the largest privately-donated collection within the archives of the Kew Historical Society.An important item of mixed-media commemorating a child's participation in fundraising during the First World War. Dorothy Richardson's brother died in Alexandria after being wounded at Gallipoli. This item formed part of a larger collection comporting service in World War 1.Young Workers’ Patriotic Guild commemorative certificate. The certificate was awarded to Dorothy Richardson, a pupil of Kew Primary School. Forty-two buttons, created to support the war effort, surround the certificate. The Young Workers’ Patriotic Guild was formed in Victorian schools in 1916. Each child who raised one pound ‘by personal productive effort’ received a certificate. The money was used for the war effort.
