The letter was addressed to Howard Nicholl, the Director of Flagstaff Hill at that time. The following information was gleaned from the contents of the letter and the labels attached to the photograph:- The photograph of the Cottage was taken in about 1917. The woman is Gertrude Shade, married to James Shade, who was the Warrnambool Town Council's Officer responsible for keeping records of Shipping activity entering and leaving the busy Port of Warrnambool. The couple and their children, Janet and William, were residents of the Assistant Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters at that time. The family is pictured in the garden on the west side of the building. A washhouse, these days referred to as a laundry, is behind the building and had already been removed when the Flagstaff Hill Planning Board had access to the site in 1972. The corrugated iron veranda was replaced in the 1980s with a smaller covered entry. Janet Shade married the man who lived across the road, Stewart Lindsay, in 1935. Stewart was employed by Nestle at the age of sixteen, working in the export department. He was acting Manager when the Manager became ill, supervising the loading of dairy products and biscuits into the holds of the waiting ships, where they were then exported to Indonesia. Many of the ships were registered in Liberia and the seamen were called 'lascar seamen, or Indian Sailors. Janet and Stewart had a son, John Stewart Lindsay, who was a Pharmacist, a member of the Warrnambool City Council, the Mayor of the City of Warrnambool, a former Director of Flagstaff Hill, and Chairman of the Flagstaff Hill Advisory Committee. This photograph has significance as a historical record of the Warrnambool Lighthouse Kerr'er's Quarters in 1917. The photograph connects the cottage to local families, to local industry, to the Port of Warrnambool, and to overseas exports from Warrnambool. Photograph from c. 1917 depicts the western side of the Warrnambool's Lighthouse keeper's Quarters constructed in bluestone, which was where the Assistant Lighthouse Keeper resided. The image shows the corrugated iron lean-to, and other rooms that were added to the original building after 1872, which were removed in the 1970s due to their poor condition. The members of the family pictured were residents at the time; Gertrude Shade (Mrs James Shade), her daughter Janet and her son William. Inscriptions are on the reverse and the accompanying envelope. Potatoes form the staple produce of the district, and the richness of the soil can be estimated by the fact that the Government Statistics for 1875 give as the average yield a return of Seven Tons to the acre. ...This document, also referred to as a word picture or Tablet, is framed in glass and timber with gilt trim, is handwritten with colour highlights. The penned letters rest on ruled guide lines, decorated where the lines intersect. The writing gives a description of the state of Borough of Warrnambool around 1875; its location, the area it covers, its population, Harbour and facilities, public buildings and institutions, imports and exports, financial worth, number of houses, connection with other areas of the Colony. A possible reason and origin for the document is found in an article ‘Link with US Exhibition’ from the Warrnambool Standard of December 19, 1981, written by local historian Bruce Morris. The writer mentions that the Warrnambool Borough Council met on 15th June 1875 and recorded a letter from G.C. Levey , secretary to the Melbourne group of commissioners representing the Colony, and Victoria in particular, for the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition of 1876. The letter asks Council to provide “statistics as to the population, social condition and commercial and industrial state of the district in and around Warrnambool.” A sub committee was formed for the project. The Mayor, Cr. Thomas King, wrote and signed a Report, presented to the council on July 14, 1875, in which “The Committee … begs to recommend that a Tablet be prepared setting for the particulars respecting the following matters relating to the Borough”. The matters included area, population, annual income, churches, schools, other public buildings, societies and companies, general description of houses erected, and returns of exports and imports for 1874. The minutes note that the Report was adopted. The article above also notes the opinion of Warrnambool printers who have examined the document; it is almost certainly to be an old lithograph, which means there could be several copies. It is possible that there may be a copy in Melbourne and another in Philadelphia. It is interesting to note that (1) the quoted location co-ordinates are for an “Unnamed Road, Packsaddle NSW 2880, Australia”, and that the DMS co-ordinates for Warrnambool’s Council Offices differ, being 38.23.9.12 South, 142.28.52.887. (2) the date for “Exports and Imports for the Year Ending 30th June 1875” is different to the period mentioned by Cr. King in the sub committee’s Report of recommendation “returns of exports and imports for 1874”. The information required to have the figures for the end of June 1875 would need to have been compiled very quickly for the Tablet to be ready for the opening of the Philadelphia Exhibition on 10 May 1876. At first, it carried tea from China. Later, it was used to transport wool from Australia. It became famous for its speed and held the record for the fastest voyage from Australia to Britain for ten years. Later, a Portuguese company bought the ship and renamed it Ferreira. After that, a retired sea captain purchased it to use as a training ship in Cornwall. When the captain died, the ship was given to a training college in Greenwich in 1938. In 1954, it was placed in dry dock at Greenwich, where it remains on display. The Cutty Sark is a special ship because it carried wool from Australia to other parts of the world. Models like this one help us imagine what sea travel was like before steam-powered ships were common, and they show us how trade, travel and migration changed over time. The Cutty Sark is also famous for being very fast. It set a record for the journey from Australia to Britain and kept that title for ten years. Today, people still recognise its importance because it has been carefully preserved and is on display at the British Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Its story has also made it a favorite subject for people who enjoy building ship models. Flagstaff Hill Warrnambool ...Peck, Stow & Wilcox was founded in 1870 by the merger of three different industrial tool manufacturers specializing in tin-processing equipment. Their factory complex was at 217 Centre Street in Southington, Connecticut. The company grew rapidly, and was by 1890 producing a diversified array of tools. It was also the town's largest employer. The plant was substantially enlarged in 1912, which is the period when most of the buildings surviving in 1989 were built. By that time, the complex was operated by Ideal Forging. That company went bankrupt in 2003, and the plant was acquired by real estate developers not long afterwards. Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and VillageFunctional object - Safe, W. Marr, Circa 1855
... exported to colonial Australia, giving significance to the safe as an item that was high in the list of the needs of the early Australians and their businesses. The safe has local historical significance as it was used by the original Bank of Australasia in Portland, which was built in 1855 and went on to become the ANZ Bank, still in operation today. The bank was an integral part of the establishment and growth of commerce in Colonial Victoria. flagstaff hill warrnambool ...This strong, heavy bank safe was made by W. Marr in London. It was formerly owned by the ANZ Bank in Portland, Victoria. Portland’s ANZ Bank was originally a branch of the Bank of Australasia, which first came to Australia in 1835, opening in Sydney. Portland’s Bank of Australasia began in a bluestone building built on the north corner of Julia and Bentinck Streets by stonemason William Robb in 1855, around the time of Australia’s Gold Rush. Eventually, in 1951, the Bank of Australasia merged with the Union Bank to become the Australia & New Zealand Bank, known as the ANZ. Portland’s branch of the Bank of Australasia then moved into the old Union Bank building at 44 Percy Streets; both bank buildings were built around the same. The maker of this safe, W. (William) Marr, obtained a patent in 1834 for what is believed to be the first fire-retarding patent, building this into the lining of strong boxes. Others made further design improvements such as hardening the metal plates used to make the boxes. In about 1840 Thomas Milner, a Sheffield tinsmith, made the earliest safes that could safely protect their contents from a surrounding fire. This was achieved by including tubes of a substance between the inner and outer walls of the safe that would react to the heat and the contents would put the fire out. In 1851 an Exhibition at London’s Crystal Palace included fire-proof safes from different vendors. William Marr was listed under Fireproof Box Makers in the 1842 London Trades Directory, at 33 Broad Street, and 52 Cheapside. William Marr & Son were appointed to supply Her Majesty’s National Debt Office and other departments in 1860, with the address 9 Walbrook, Vulcan Safe Works, Skin Yard, Bankside, Southwark, London. 1n 1870 the address for William Marr listed under Safe Makers and Agents in the London Trades Directory was 67 Cannon Street. The manufacturer, W Marr, is significant as an inventor of a way to make a strong box fireproof, then patented his secure safe. This invention indicates that security of money was of great importance in the mid-1800s as it continues to be today. The secure safe would have given much comfort to those with investments and savings, as well as to the bank itself, the custodian of other people's money. This safe was made in London and exported to colonial Australia, giving significance to the safe as an item that was high in the list of the needs of the early Australians and their businesses. The safe has local historical significance as it was used by the original Bank of Australasia in Portland, which was built in 1855 and went on to become the ANZ Bank, still in operation today. The slotted design of the cardholder allows a card to stand vertically, and the base is made wider to stabilise the holder. It could be used for holding items such as place cards, menus, and table numbers. ABOUT THE SS EDINA: - The three-masted, iron-hulled screw steamer SS Edina was built in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1854 by Barclay and Curle and launched on the Clyde on May 4th, 1854. The 322-ton, three-masted ship was 171 feet long, 23 feet 6 inches broad, and 12 feet 7 inches deep (52.12 L x 7.16 B x 3.84 D metres). The traditional figurehead of Edina, the ‘fair maid of Judea’, adorned its bow. The Edina later became famous worldwide for being the longest-serving screw steamer. (The term screw steamer comes from being driven by a single propeller, sometimes called a screw, driven by a steam engine.) During its long working life, SS Edina had its accommodation enlarged for war service, was completely overhauled and serviced several times; boilers were replaced, masts were reduced to one, and later added then reduced, a Poop Deck, Forecastle and additional accommodation were added, the hull was gutted completely, new decks and bulwarks, saloon was redecorated and upgraded, and several changes of commander. The busy vessel also survived several mishaps at sea. SS Edina’s interesting history includes English Channel runs, carrying stores and horses to the Black Sea in the Crimean War as HMS Edina 1864-55. The vessel then sailed to Europe and the UK before being sold and used for further service in 1861 as a blockade runner in the American Civil War. The vessel later served as a coastal trader in the western district of Victoria and Queensland, then carried gold, currency, and gold prospectors from Australia to New Zealand. SS Edina was an escort vessel to H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh during his visit to Australia in 1867. SOME EVENTS in the life of SS EDINA: - The SS Edina had voyaged to Australia under sail. Owners Leith, Hull & Hamburg Steam Packet Co. sold the SS Edina in March 1863 at Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne, to Stephen Henty of Portland, Victoria; Edina was perfect for working the West Coast cargo and passenger run between Melbourne and Portland, via the Port of Warrnambool, and Port Fairy. It first visited Warrnambool on April 4, 1863. SS Edina briefly worked the run from Australia to New Zealand, then returned to the West Coast run; the cargo included bales of wool produced in the western district of Victoria. In 1867-68, Stephen Henty sold SS Edina to the Warrnambool Steam Packet Company to continue trading along the coast of western Victoria. Captain John Thompson was the commander, and John Davies was the Chief Engineer. In 1870, SS Edina was in Lady Bay, Warrnambool, when a gale sprang up and caused a collision with the iron screw steamer SS Dandenong. SS Edina’s figurehead was broken into pieces and was never replaced. The Edina was refitted that year for use as a coastal trader in Queensland for a period, named R.M.S. Edina. It then went to Melbourne and carried cargo and passengers between there and Geelong from 1880 to 1938, with modifications in 1917; the ship was extensively overhauled, radically changing its appearance. It returned to having two masts, and the funnel, bridge, engines, and promenade deck were upgraded, and the saloon reupholstered. By 1924, Edina had made over 12,000 journeys, carrying over one million travellers between Melbourne and Geelong. In 1937, Australian Steamships Pty Ltd advertised in The Argus its Bay Excursions on the SS Edina from Portarlington and Geelong; it promoted, “Splendid Beaches, Excellent Bathing Facilities, and Light Refreshments available on board”. After several collisions, the SS Edina was taken out of service in 1938 and sold by its owner, Howard Smith Ltd., to a Williamstown shipbreaker, Mr George Burton. The Melbourne Harbour Trust permitted Burton to strip the hull and sell all parts at auction. The fittings were sold by auctioneers J.W. Styles & Son, c. 1938, on site at the Port of Melbourne and became widely dispersed. Victorian Lighterage Pty Ltd. purchased the hull, removed the engine and superstructure, and repurposed it as a ‘lighter’ named Dinah. It was loaded with wool and general cargo, then towed behind small tugs around the bay between Melbourne and Geelong. In 1957, after 104 years of activity, the SS Edina was broken up on the banks of the Maribyrnong River, Footscray, Melbourne, and used as landfill. A piece of the hull with Victorian Heritage significance is buried in the river. This card holder is made from wood from the SS Edina and is significant for its association with that vessel. The SS Edina is heritage listed on the Victorian Heritage Database VHR S199. She had endeared herself to the people of Port Phillip Bay as a passenger ferry, part of their history and culture. She played a significant role in the Crimean War, the American Civil War and the gold rush in New Zealand. She also served Western Victoria for many years in her cargo and passenger runs. The SS Edina is famous for being the longest-serving screw steamer in the world. After spending her first nine years overseas, she arrived in Melbourne, and her work included running the essential service of transporting cargo and passengers between Melbourne and the western Victoria ports of Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Portland. The SS Edina was purchased in the late 1860s by local Warrnambool business, the Warrnambool Steam Packet Co. and continued trading from there as part of the local business community. The SS Edina’s original ‘fair maid of Judea’ figurehead was broken to pieces in a collision with another vessel (the SS Dandenong) in a gale off Warrnambool, Victoria, in 1870. They were manufacturers of pewter ware, electroplated Britannia metal, silverware, and electroplated nickel silver. Their products included hundreds of items for use in the kitchen (e.g. bowls, cutting tools) and the dining room (e.g. tea services, cocktail shakers, and mixers) as well as items such as candlesticks. They were a world leader in manufacturing shooting accessories through the nineteenth century and exported powder flasks in large quantities to America, They were known as whistle makers, which like most of their products were of outstanding quality. They were located first at Silver Street (1806), Cornish Place (1822) Sheffield. Their registered trademark since 1879 was a Trumpet with a Banner hanging from it. Although registered in 1879, the "Trumpet with Banner" logo was used at times before registration and appears on some of their silver plate pieces. They were one of the foremost names in EPNS and sterling silver tableware including silver tea services and hollowware pieces. They also made silverware serving pieces and had a wide catalogue of patterns. Their tea sets and hollowware pieces produced in silver are now very valuable as antiques. The firm continued to be a family-run enterprise until 1976. ... exporting their products all over the world. Its designs are still in use today, demonstrating the longevity and significance of the Burleigh Ware trade mark. Flagstaff Hill Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village Warrnambool ...Burleigh Pottery, also known as Burgess & Leigh, is the name of a pottery manufacturer in Middleport, Stoke-on-Trent. The business specialises in traditionally shaped and patterned domestic earthenware of high quality. The business was established in 1851 at the Central Pottery in Burslem as Hulme and Booth. The pottery was taken over in 1862 by William Leigh and Frederick Rathbone Burgess, and traded from that date as Burgess & Leigh. The trademark "Burleigh", used from the 1930s, is a combination of the two names. Burgess and Leigh moved to different works, first in 1868 to the Hill Pottery in Burslem and then in 1889 to the present factory at Middleport, which at the time was regarded as a model pottery. Its scale and linear organisation was in contrast to other potteries' constricted sites and haphazard layout of their working spaces. In 1887, Davenport Pottery was acquired by Burleigh primarily for its moulds. These historic moulds are still used today in the production of Burleigh ware. Leigh and Burgess died in 1889 and 1895, respectively, and were succeeded by their sons, Edmund Leigh and Richard Burgess. On Richard's death in 1912, the business passed entirely into the ownership of the Leigh family. In 1919, it became a private limited company, Burgess & Leigh Ltd. The years between the wars are often regarded as the company's "golden age", with many extremely talented designers and artists such as Harold Bennett, Charles Wilkes and Ernest Bailey. Perhaps the best known was Charlotte Rhead, who worked between 1926 and 1931, noted particularly for her work in tubelining. By 1939, the factory was employing over 500 people. The business took great pains, from as early as 1897, to build up a thriving export network, concentrating primarily on the Empire, later becoming the Commonwealth and American markets, and focusing later on Europe. After a run of financial difficulty, the company was sold in 1999 to the Dorling family, Rosemary and William Dorling, and traded as Burgess Dorling & Leigh. In 2010, it was acquired by Denby Holdings Ltd, the parent company of Denby Pottery.Burleigh was a significant company producing pottery over many generations and exporting their products all over the world. A larger factory was needed so the first of three stages of a factory was built. During the Second World War Rossi Boots was a major supplier to the military making hundreds of thousands of boots that saw service in various theatres including New Guinea. The war years saw the number of employees peak at around five hundred. As methods of manufacturing footwear changed as petroleum-based products such as glues, rubbers and plastics have replaced the traditional ones of leather, nails, and threads. More modern machinery was introduced to directly mould soles to the bottom of the boot. At the end of 1987, the company moved from Unley to Hilton this move allowed production to be carried out in a more modern, fit-for-purpose factory. Since then the company has continued to change; introducing computer-controlled machines for cutting, sewing, and attaching soles. These changes occurred whilst many of Rossi's competitors moved offshore. Whilst the introduction of these machines reduced the number of local staff, it has enabled Rossi Boots to continue to manufacture in Australia. In March 2019 Rossi Boots relocated the factory, warehouse, and headquarters from Hilton to Kilburn, South Australia. This move to a new, expansive location allows Rossi Boots to continue manufacturing in South Australia housing all operations under one roof. THE CUTTY SARK: - The Cutty Sark was built in Britain in 1869 and was one of the last great sailing ships. This postcard features a photograph of a model of the sailing ship Cutty Sark, making it significant because of its connection to this well-known vessel. The famous tea clipper transported wool from Australia to markets around the world. Models such as this one help us understand what sea travel was like before steam-powered ships became widespread, while also illustrating how trade, travel and migration developed over time. Cutty Sark was also celebrated for its speed. It broke records on the voyage from Australia to Britain and held this distinction for ten years. Its importance is still recognised today, as the ship has been carefully preserved and is now displayed at the British Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Its remarkable history has also made it a popular subject for model ship enthusiasts. The postcard is also valuable because it shows a model of Cutty Sark built by the renowned C. N. Longridge, who was not only a respected surgeon but also a skilled model maker and author of detailed maritime works. A further connection is found in the printer, B Matthews, who photographed and printed collections featuring famous people, model ships and maritime scenes, adding another layer of historical interest to the postcard. In 1954, it was placed in dry dock at Greenwich, where it remains on display. The postcard is important for is connection with the vessel, Cutty Sark, a special ship because it carried wool from Australia to other parts of the world. Postcards like this one help us imagine what sea travel was like before steam-powered ships were common, and they show us how trade, travel and migration changed over time. The Cutty Sark is also famous for being very fast. It set a record for the journey from Australia to Britain and kept that title for ten years. Today, people still recognise its importance because it has been carefully preserved and is on display at the British Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Its story has also made it a favourite subject for people who enjoy building ship models. The postcard is important to Australian history, as it shows the Cutty Sark at Sydney on one of its voyages, in the command of Captain Richard Woodget, a respected mariner and master of sailing ships.Postcard: Black and white postcard of a photographed image of a 3-masted sailing ship, sails half-lowered. Andrew Mason had been given the photograph by Mr. Mac Fordham, who was the Chief Engineer of the SS Edina. Both men had been Engineers in WW I. The configuration of the SS Edina in the photograph is post 1890. ABOUT THE S S EDINA The three-masted iron screw steamer SS Edina was built in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1854 by Barclay and Curle. She was adorned with the figurehead of ‘fair maid of Judea’. The many years of service made SS Edina famous worldwide as the longest-serving screw steamer. (The term screw steamer comes from being driven by a single propeller, sometimes called a screw, driven by a steam engine.) SS Edina’s interesting history includes English Channel runs, serving in the Crimean War carrying ammunition, horses and stores to the Black Sea, and further service in the American Civil War and later, serving in the western district of Victoria as well as in Queensland and carried gold, currency and gold prospectors Australia to New Zealand. SS Edina had the privilege of being an escort vessel to H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh during his visit to Australia in 1867. In March 1863, SS Edina arrived in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne and was bought by Stephen Henty, of Portland fame, to work the cargo and passenger run from Melbourne – Warrnambool – Port Fairy - Portland. After a short time of working the run from Australia to New Zealand, with passengers and cargo that included gold and currency, she returned to her Melbourne - Warrnambool – Port Fairy run, with cargo including bales of wool produced in the western district of Victoria. The Warrnambool Steam Packet Company purchased SS Edina in 1867; she was now commanded by Captain John Thompson and Chief Engineer John Davies. She survived several mishaps at sea, had a complete service and overhaul and several changes of commanders. In 1870 SS Edina was in Lady Bay, Warrnambool, when a gale sprung up and caused a collision with the iron screw steamer SS Dandenong. SS Edina’s figurehead was broken into pieces and it was not ever replaced. SS Edina was refitted in 1870 then was used as a coastal trader in Queensland for a period. She was then brought to Melbourne to carry cargo and passengers between Melbourne and Geelong and performed this service 1880-1938. During this time (1917) she was again refitted with a new mast, funnel, bridge and promenade deck, altering her appearance. In 1938, after more collisions, SS Edina was taken out of service. However, she was later renamed Dinah and used as a ‘lighter’ (a vessel without engine or superstructure) to be towed and carry wool and general cargo between Melbourne and Geelong. In 1957, after 104 years, the SS Edina was broken up at Footscray, Melbourne. Remains of SS Edina’s hull can be found in the Maribyrnong River, Port Phillip Bay. This photograph of the SS Edina is significant for its association with the screw steamer SS Edina. The SS Edina is famous for being the longest serving screw steamer in the world. After spending her first nine years overseas she arrived in Melbourne and her work included running the essential service of transporting cargo and passengers between Melbourne and the western Victoria ports of Warrnambool, Port Fairy and Portland. The SS Edina was purchased in the late 1860’s by local Warrnambool business, the Warrnambool Steam Packet Co. and continued trading from there as part of the local business community. In 2014 most of their hand tools were still made in Sheffield at the Footprint factory. Footprint Tools can trace its manufacturing history as far back as the 1760s when Alfrid Ridge & Sons was established as a manufacturer of woodworking tools. Ridge was bought by the current owning family in 1932. The Footprint brand originates from 1875 when Thomas R Ellin, a member of a cutlery manufacturing family, started a tool manufacturing business under the brand "Footprint". This subsequently became known as Thomas R Ellin (Footprint Works). This company was bought by the current owning family in 1948 and began to manufacture a range of tools under the Footprint, Domino, Climax, John Bull, and Clinker brands. During World War 2 the divisions of the business were engaged in manufacturing hand tools for British and Commonwealth forces. After the war Footprint continued to grow, manufacture, and expand its range of hand tools for the professional tradesman. In 2008 Footprint moved to a larger factory and invested in new forging equipment, but this process was interrupted by a global recession, and Footprint was unable to generate enough business to cover the cost of the upgrades. In early 2009 the company was forced to liquidate and lay off its staff to pay creditors. The Jewitt family retained the brand and intellectual property, and later that year revived the company under the name Footprint Sheffield and began producing a smaller range of products at first. With the same family of owner-managers, now run by the fourth generation, in 2015 Footprint continues to manufacture most of their products in Sheffield, England, and exports worldwide. This item gives us a look into the history of the beginnings of an early company that made tools in Sheffield England and is still producing tools today.Ring Auger, Double Twist with Lead Screw, bit 1" with round shaft Imprinted 'footprint' trademarkflagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village -

He began by making butter churns in his spare time and his product soon became popular allowing him to establish a viable business. A factory was established in 1875 and he started to make churns of all sizes including up to industrial scale. He exported his products to many countries around the world, Edward Cherry died in 1909 and the business was then run by his son George until he died in 1917. E Cherry's other son Thomas (1861-1945) was also involved in the firm maintaining an interest for several years.
