These labels or stickers were produced as part of the celebrations and promotional material to be used during the period 1979 to 1982 when Warrnambool was the official Premier Town in Victoria. The title was awarded by the Premier of Victoria with scores allocated for heritage and environment, community participation, industrial and commercial development, tourism, land use and public works and community facilities. Warrnambool won the inaugural award in 1958, in 1979-82 and in 1988-91.These labels are of minor interest as reminders of one of the times when Warrnambool was awarded the title of Victoria’s Premier Town.These are eight green labels on a perforated sheet. This Holiday Guide was produced by the Warrnambool Standard with several articles contributed to the supplement by Sally Clark, the Warrnambool Tourist Promotion Officer. Holiday Guides were produced each year to assist and promote tourism in the area. The fact that Warrnambool had won the Premier Town Award for the years 1979-1982 was an added reason for tourists to come to the region and this fact was used as an advertising tool. Warrnambool won the Premier Town Award in 1988 for the third time. This Holiday Guide is of some interest as it shows what was considered the best places for tourists to visit in the Warrnambool region in 1980. The advertisements are also of some value for recording the business life of the city in 1980. This is a collection of sixteen tourist guides dating from the mid 1970's to 2013. These contain listings of businesses, accommodation, eateries and events in Warrnambool and district. They also include maps of Warrnambool and surrounds, advertising and photographs of various attractions. While mainly covering Warrnambool a small number of the guides cover the South West Region. These records of two songs sung by John and Mary Kopke, has been made as a souvenir of Warrnambool during the time it won the Premier Town Award 1979-1982. This award was given to a town or city that showed excellence in official environmental practice. The promotion song, ‘City By the Sea’ celebrates Warrnambool and mentions the May Racing Carnival with its Grand Annual Steeple Race, the Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycle Race and Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum. The other song is about the Mahogany Ship, a ship that was first found wrecked on the coast near Warrnambool in 1836. There were many sightings of the wreck until the 1890s when it disappeared. There has been speculation ever since about the ship’s origins – Spanish? Portuguese? Chinese? The search for the wreck continues. This record is an interesting one – a memento of the celebrations in Warrnambool during the time it won the Premier Town Award 1979-1982.
