The Australian Red Cross was established in 1914 as part of the British Red Cross and the Warrnambool branch was established in the same year. The local Warrnambool branch volunteers were mainly women who held sewing meetings, organized parcels for the soldiers abroad during World War One, undertook First Aid courses to be of assistance in hospitals and raised funds for the Red Cross, especially the local branch and the Melbourne branch. The Red Cross was formed in the 19th century as a service organization dedicated to helping those in need. The Australian Red Cross was established in 1914 and the Warrnambool Red Cross was established in the same year. Wangoom Red Cross was established at a later date. The recipe booklet was a means of funding the organization and utilizing the culinary knowledge and skills of the local women. Wangoom is a small settlement on the northern fringes of the city of Warrnambool. This booklet is of some interest as an example of the fund-raising methods used by the Wangoom Red Cross. It also shows the type of cakes and ingredients popular in 2013 (eg blueberries, muffins, mud cakes )These are three A4 pages folded to make 12 pages of printed recipes. The printing is black type on white paper with black and white sketches related to cookery. These are plans for alterations to the residence and surgery of Dr Angus in Koroit Street, Warrnambool (Birchwood). Dr William Roy Angus (1901-1970), after several years practising as a doctor in South Australia and northern Victoria, came to Warrnambool in 1939, purchasing the practice of Dr John Hunter Henderson (Birchwood). Dr Angus was a dominant figure in medical and community circles in Warrnambool for 30 years, becoming an important ophthalmologist in his later years. Birchwood, with its beautiful gardens, lawns and tennis court was suitable for entertaining and many distinguished people, including Vice-Regal personnel and representatives of the Red Cross stayed at the house. It was also a meeting place for representatives of the many organizations with which Dr Angus was associated (over 20 groups including the Good Neighbour Council, the Boys’ Club, the Food For Britain appeal, the Historical Society, Rostrum and the National Fitness Council). Birchwood or earlier buildings on the site was used as a residence/surgery by many doctors in Warrnambool, going back to the 1860s and Dr Angus and his family lived there from 1939 to 1967. In 1998 Birchwood was demolished and a new Warrnambool Police Station was built on the site. These plans are of interest as they show the 1939 alterations to the building known as Birchwood in Koroit Street Warrnambool. We have a good floor plan and a drawing of the front of the building so we know what it looked like in the late 1930s. Both Birchwood and Dr Angus are important in Warrnambool’s history. These are four sheets showing alterations for the residence of Dr Angus (Birchwood) in Koroit Street Warrnambool. This is a program of a concert organized by the Soldiers’ Christmas Comforts Group and the Red Cross in Warrnambool to raise funds for the soldiers on active service in World War One. The concert was held in the Warrnambool Town Hall in September 1916 and featured a Melbourne artist, Horace Wood, who gave several violin solos and the local Warrnambool orchestra of Miss Gertrude Rooney. The Rooneys were early settlers in the Dennington area and had the property, ‘White Rock’ in Dennington and a produce store in Warrnambool. Miss Gertrude Rooney was an accomplished musician and was prominent in musical circles in Warrnambool during the first half of the 20th century. This program is of interest as an example of the fund raising activities in Warrnambool during World War One and of the type of entertainment offered at concerts at that time. There are many well-known names listed among the orchestra members at the back of the program. This is a sheet of buff-coloured paper folded in two to make four pages. Large stores were also built near where the present railway station is situated to hold produce and carriages. These documents relate to contracts between Marion Gauley ,contractor of Warrnambool and the borough of Warrnambool for the operation of horse work with the tramway. John McDermid sadler,and William Stevens farmer of Russell's Creek are acting as surety for the contract.The tramway was an important part of Warrnambool's infrastructure and history and the documents also include names of local people. According to these documents , the horses were required for many different tasks in the operation of the tramways including the moving of freight, removal of sand from the area, shunting of trucks and ballasting and repairing lines when necessary.The contractors had a list of conditions imposed including the provision of six horses of strong working ability and sufficient finances. The contract period was for 1 year and payment was monthly in arrears and hours of operation were from 7 am to 6 pm. These are two programmes of the Civic and Memorial Official Service held in the Warrnambool Town Hall on 26th May 1918. The service was held for two purposes. One was to celebrate the gazetting of Warrnambool as a city, two days earlier, on 24th May 1918. The other was to offer prayers and remember those on active service in World War One and those who had died in the war and to pray for the war to end. (World War One came to an end in the November of 1918). The service on 26th May in Warrnambool was conducted by the ministers of churches in Warrnambool and attended by the Mayor and Councillors and Council workers. A collection was taken up at the service for the British Red Cross Society. The Mayor at the time was William Swinton.This program is of considerable interest as it brings to our attention two events of importance in our history – Warrnambool becoming a city in 1918 and the city’s involvement in World War One and the long-term effects of this war on all settlements in Australia. It also highlights the importance at the time of the Christian religions in Australia.These are two copies of the programme of the 1918 Warrnambool Civic and Memorial Service. The programme is one sheet of buff-coloured paper folded in two to make four pages. There is blue printed material on three of the pages. This stencil has been made to imprint the label, 'Britain Relief Appeal' on to parcels and packages sent to Britain in the late 1940s and the early 1950s from the City of Warrnambool. Britain endured severe rationing of food, clothing, petrol and furniture from 1940 because of the outbreak of World War Two and this rationing continued in some form after the war up to 1954. Australian towns and cities established organizations such as Food For Britain and sent regular parcels of food and clothing to Britain during those times. The British Relief Appeal in Warrnambool (via the Warrnambool Food For Britain committee) was sponsored by the Warrnambool City Council, Toc H, Australian Red Cross, and various local charities and businesses. The Warrnambool & District Historical Society has in its collection over 100 letters sent by grateful British recipients of these parcels to the senders, the employees of the local Warrnambool business, Swintons Stores.This stencil is of interest as a memento of the effects of rationing in Britain in post-World War Two times and the close ties that existed between Australian towns and cities and their British counterparts.This is a rectangular-shaped metal stencil, originally painted black, with cut-out letters in the centre. The Mepunga & District Racing Club was formed at a meeting of sportsmen from various hamlets east of Warrnambool held at the Allans Forest State School, Mepunga West. The club was formed to conduct picnic race meetings in aid of charity and patriotic funds. On the committee were two representatives from Allansford, Cudgee, Mepunga, Nirranda, Nullawarre and Panmure, with Mr. W. Bant of Panmure elected as president. The club held its first race meeting, at Warrnambool, on 22 April 1944 in aid of district Red Cross Funds. It held four annual picnic race meetings from 1944 to 1947. These cycling medals were awarded to W. S. Toyne. Two of these medals are time medallions relating to the Warrnambool to Melbourne Cycle Race. This race was first held in 1895 and continues to the present day. It was originally a handicap race from Warrnambool to Melbourne but after 1938 it became a Melbourne to Warrnambool race. After 1995 it became a scratch race and today the distance is shorter with the race starting from Avalon. It is the second oldest one-day cycling race in the world and the longest one-day cycling race in Australia. All riders who complete the race in a given time are awarded a Time Medallion. The race was sponsored by the Dunlop company from 1901 to 1927. In 1923, 123 of the 196 riders, who started at 5:30am completed the 165 mile road race and were awarded the time medallion. W. S. Toyne was listed among the some of the first cyclists to go through Camperdown at 8:16am. It was reported that over 50,000 spectators witnessed the progress of the race. These cycling medals belonged to a cyclist, W. S. Toyne, who completed in a significant sporting event in Warrnambool in 1923 and 1924. It is presumed that the 'A.C.F.' on two of these badges stands for 'Australian Comforts Fund'. The Australian Comforts Fund was one of two wartime welfare groups recognized by the Australian Government. The other was the Australian Red Cross. The Australian Comforts Fund was established in 1916 to co-ordinate the welfare efforts to assist Australian servicemen and women in World War One. It was dissolved in 1920 and re-established in 1939. It was staffed largely by women volunteers and supplied such articles as singlets, socks, pyjamas, toiletries, writing materials, tobacco and Christmas hampers to servicemen and women. It also offered recreational facilities and rest rooms etc in Australia for service personnel. It was closed in 1946. This badge has been issued by the Victorian branch of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of OddFellows. This is a benefit society owned by members who assist other members in times of illness or unemployment. Originally founded in Manchester, England, the M.U.I.O.O.F. started in Melbourne in 1840. The Warrnambool branch was founded in 1860. These badges appear to have been issued as part of Wattle Day celebrations in the period 1910 to 1919. The use of wattle as an Australian symbol was strong during the pre-Federation and Federation days and was particularly promoted by the Australian Natives Association, a prominent campaigner for Federation. This field First Aid kit is a mixture of items, some prepared for use in wartime, including World War One and some for use in peace time emergencies. The calico bag, produced by the Red Cross in Kalgoorlie, W.A., has been used by the State Emergency Service and at a later date by a scout group. The name, ‘S. Dempster’ is on the striped calico bag. Samuel Dempster was born in Ireland and was living at Panmure when he enlisted. He was attached to the 6 Ambulance training. He served from 1942-46 This is a calico shoulder bag with the shoulder strap adjustable with the use of metal clips. This exercise book contains the Minutes of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill Employees Patriotic Fund. This fund was established in 1915 in a scheme whereby employees of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill donated 2½% of their weekly wages to the fund to assist with the war effort during World War One. The money received was given to such charitable causes as the Red Cross, the Belgian Fund, the Babies of France and the Local Distress Fund. The Patriotic Fund was discontinued in 1919This Minute Book is of interest as an example of the local campaigns organized in Warrnambool to assist the war effort in World War One. It includes the names of office-bearers of the group and lists the type of activities in which they were engaged. Therefore it is of benefit to researchers. This is an exercise book with a green and black mottled patterned cover with red binding on the spine. A printed label on the cover has been torn away. The first Grand Annual was held in 1872 as the Warrnambool Handicap Steeplechase. Mudeet won the race in 1960 with Warrnambool jockey E Byrne. This book contains the Minutes and financial details from the Allans Forest Red Cross Hospital Auxiliary from 1925 to 1930. Allans Forest is a small locality on the Great Ocean Road about three kilometres from the township of Allansford on the eastern fringe of Warrnambool. The Hospital Auxiliary was formed as an extension of the Allansford group in 1925 to provide support for the Warrnambool and District Hospital. The group raised funds with dances and jumble sales and donated to the hospital such items as groceries (especially home made jams and soaps), hospital linen and baby wear. The hospital would provide tins of fat for the ladies to make the soap. This exercise book is of interest as a memento of the activities of a small group in a small settlement in the Warrnambool area nearly a hundred years ago. It shows the reliance in the past of a town hospital on local groups to provide basic items such as food and linen.This is an exercise book with a dark red cardboard cover and black binding on the spine. This satchel belonged to John Malcolm Fraser (1930-2015), the 22nd Prime Minister of Australia from 1975 to 1983. Malcolm Fraser was educated at Melbourne Grammar and Oxford University and lived for many years on the family property, Nareen in the Western District. He was the leader of the Australian Liberal Party and was the Federal member in the seat of Wannon in the Western District, an area which included Warrnambool. As the Prime Minister he took a particular interest in foreign affairs. This satchel was donated by Malcolm Fraser to a charity auction held in Warrnambool in 1997 in aid of the Red Cross and the purchaser of the satchel at that time has since donated the item to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This satchel is of considerable significance as it belonged to Malcolm Fraser, the Prime Minister of Australia from 1975 to 1983, the local member in the Federal seat of Wannon and a property owner and resident in the Western District of Victoria. This is a brown leather brief case or satchel. The compartment on one side has a metal catch and holders inside for pencils and pens. This side also has another compartment with a zip fastener and two extra pockets with flaps on the top held by metal catches. There is another compartment on the other side with an extra pocket enclosed with a zip folder. There is a leather handle on the top of the satchel and inside one of the pockets is an extra leather strap to extend the handle length. The handle has a maroon-coloured airways tag attached with information on the satchel’s owner. There is some scuffing near the top handle. These labels come from the Warrnambool chemist business of John Sambell/Sambell and Son/Sambell, Son and Granddaughter. John Sambell opened the Hall of Pharmacy in Fairy Street, Warrnambool about 1890. He was a chemist and dentist with previous business experience in Great Britain and Victoria. By 1919 John Sambell’s son, Herbert had joined the business, trading as Sambell and Son (though John Sambell died in 1906) and the shop was located at 151 Fairy Street. In the late 1930s Sambells moved to 90 Fairy Street and was known as Sambell, Son and Granddaughter. Herbert Sambell died in 1943. These labels show some of the many products sold by the Warrnambool chemist business of John Sambell/Sambell & Son/Sambell, Son and Granddaughter, a prominent 20th century Warrnambool business. This is an old tin which has been used as a first aid box by a scout group in Warrnambool. It appears to date from about the 1950s. Today there are two scout groups in Warrnambool and one in Allansford. The Warrnambool Norfolk group has its headquarters at the corner of Raglan Parade and Kepler Street and the Warrnambool Tooram group has halls at the corner of Timor and Banyan Streets and in Otway Road. This tin is of minor interest as an item that belonged to a local scout group in the mid 20th century.This is a rectangular metal box painted cream but with the paint peeling. The metal handle is rusted and there are two metal catches. On the side is a red cross taped on and a red cross painted on the top. There is a black hand-painted name. The Country Women’s Association of Australia advances the rights and equity of women, families and communities in Australia through advocacy and empowerment, especially for those living in regional, rural and remote Australia. The Country Women’s Association of Victoria was founded in 1928 and the Warrnambool Branch was founded in 1931. The branch has given assistance through the years to the Red Cross, Baby Health Centres, the Warrnambool Hospital, bush fire relief, mental health and aged care and it has regular displays of country arts and crafts. In 1961 the C.W.A. Centre and Rest Rooms were opened in Kepler Street, Warrnambool. In 2016 the group celebrated the 85th anniversary of its founding.This booklet is of interest to researchers and others wanting a brief outline of the history of the Warrnambool Branch of the Country Women’s Association. This is a small booklet of 12 pages. The front cover is white with black printing and it has a yellow back cover. The booklet has black plastic spiral binding. The pages contain printed information, photocopies of newspaper articles, a knitting pattern and other photocopied material. These badges appear to have been issued as part of Wattle Day celebrations in the period 19910 to 1919. The use of wattle as an Australian symbol was strong during the pre- Federation and Federation days and was particularly promoted by the Australian Natives Association, a prominent campaigner for Federation. Wattle Day was established in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide in 1910 and the wattle symbol was a strong one for servicemen serving overseas in World War One and wattle badges and pins were used to raise funds for funds such organisations as the Red Cross.These badges are of interest as an example of the strong national sentiment engendered on Australia by World War One..1 circular metal concave badge featuring a cream map of Australia with dark green outline. These badges were issued by the Commonwealth Button Fund to raise funds for the Victorian Red Cross appeal in World War One.
