This was the first Ideal Town award, a competition sponsored by the The Sun newspaper with the finalists decided by votes sent in by The Sun readers. Warrnambool won in the large town category. Warrnambool Council and local businesses used the award as a tourist promotion tool. This badge commemorates the awarding to Warrnambool in 1928 of the title of Victoria's Ideal Town. This was an award sponsored by the Sun News-Pictorial Melbourne newspaper and 1927-8 was the first year of the award. Warrnambool celebrated the win with a week's celebrations in February 1928 of street processions and entertainments in the Botanic Gardens . The badge is of considerable interest as a memento of the year 1928 when Warrnambool won the title of Victoria's Ideal Town Circular metal concave badge featuring an image of Thunder Point surrounded by a royal blue border with text. The Florado Festival was held annually from 1957-1966 with its annual parade being most popular. Funds raised were used to help finance the new Olympic swimming pool in the town. The Premier towns is an award given by the Victorian state Government. It recognises positive actions by regional communities to protect and enhance their local environment. It is based on criteria relating to litter prevention and waste management, environmental and heritage management as well as activities among community groups and leadership. Peck, Stow & Wilcox was founded in 1870 by the merger of three different industrial tool manufacturers specializing in tin-processing equipment. Their factory complex was at 217 Centre Street in Southington, Connecticut. The company grew rapidly, and was by 1890 producing a diversified array of tools. It was also the town's largest employer. The plant was substantially enlarged in 1912, which is the period when most of the buildings surviving in 1989 were built. By that time, the complex was operated by Ideal Forging. That company went bankrupt in 2003, and the plant was acquired by real estate developers not long afterwards. Demolition of the premises took place in 2015, after hazardous materials were removed from the site.A large American company that exported it’s goods all over the world and was a major producer of balance scales. The company no longer in existence and its products are now regarded as collectors items.
