Built for William and Anna-Maria Greenlaw in the early 1880s, and with interiors decorated by the Paterson Bros, Villa Alba remained in private ownership until 1949. From 1950, the house was owned by a number of institutions. By 1984, the Villa Alba Preservation Society had been formed, and three years later, the Mount Royal Hospital granted a 25-year lease to Kew Council. In 2004, the title to Villa Alba was passed by the Victorian Government to The Villa Alba Museum Incorporated. The Museum, at 44 Walmer Street, Kew, is now a cultural institution committed to the collection, study and display of 19th century interior decorative finishes, and the components of 19th and 20th century interior decoration. This is one of a number of historically and aesthetically significant photos of the interiors and exterior of Villa Alba when it was still owned by the Mount Royal Hospital, showing twentieth century accretions and deterioration of the historic fabric of the building. This was a benchmark survey against which future conservation and restoration activities can be measured. In December 1987, Mockridge Stahle & Mitchell Pty Ltd Architects prepared ‘Villa Alba Survey: A Report on the fabric for Mount Royal Hospital’ of which this photograph is a part. Photo of numerous pipes, all installed during the period when the house was owned by the Royal Women's Hospital as a home for nurses (1950-1974). The pipes extended from a bathroom installed at the end of the first floor hall, running along the box gutter to the rear of the building. This Field Survey was commissioned by the Melbourne Board of Works and was used to position the Maroondah Aqueduct bridge north of Greensborough at its crossing point on the Plenty River. It incorporated the use of wrought iron water pipes and therefore is of lighter construction than other similar bridges in the district. Samuel Cross worked for the Hamilton Waterworks Trust and his invention relates to a box joint in two sections and is particularly useful for repairing a pipe containing fluid under either high or low pressure in which a leak, blow out, or burst occurs. Samuel Cross' invention is mentioned in the minutes of the Hamilton Waterworks Trust, copied pages can be found in the supplementary files. Cross' invention helped to prevent water loss whilst a pipe was being repaired. Hamilton Waterworks Trust was an early predecessor to Glenelg Water which later merged with Portland Coast Water and South West Water to form Wannon Water. The patent is significant because the invention was revolutionary for the early Victorian 20th century engineering, and it is still being used today.A3 sheet, printed on both sides, folded into A4, printed in black and white, contains 4 photographs.water pipes, water supply, engineering, samuel cross, hamilton

Newsletter No., 229, August 2016 Heritage Excursion - Maroondah Aqueduct Walk - Saturday 3rd September The Maroondah Aqueduct was once a major link in Melbourne’s water supply system. It was built between 1886 and 1891 to transfer water from the Watts River near Healesville to the Preston Reservoir. It was 66 km in length, made up of 41 km of open channel, 10 km of tunnel through hills and 15 km of pipeline across stream valleys known as inverted siphons. The section of the aqueduct through the Eltham area has been abandoned since the 1980s but the open channel has largely been retained. A recreational path follows the aqueduct reserve. For our excursion on 3rd September we intend to walk along the section of the aqueduct adjacent to Allendale Road. This is a section not visited on previous excursions and includes the transition from open channel to the inverted siphon across the Diamond Creek valley. Apart from the aqueduct itself the main feature of the walk is the extensive views across Eltham North and Diamond Creek. Along the way we will talk about the history of the aqueduct and the area. This easy walk is about 3 km return and will take 2 to 2.5 hours. It will start at 2pm at the junction of Allendale Road with Godber Road and Zig Zag Road North, officially Diamond Creek, but on the northern boundary of Eltham. (Melway ref.12 B10). Cocks Pioneer Gold & Tin Mines NL sluicing works, open cut hydraulic mine. Cocks Pioneer Electric Gold & Tin Mine Company was formed in 1899. The company's first power station, located at the eastern end of the valley began operating with its 340 Kilowatt steam-powered generator. By 1909, from 2,500,000 cubic yards worked, reported recovery was 17,284 ounces of gold and 224 tons of tin ore. By 1909, Cocks Pioneer’s power plant had become inadequate and uneconomical. The barge was floated downstream about a mile, but lost time caused the operations to cease. Following testing, a new mine was established by diverting Reid's Creek at a cost of £25,000. Settling dams were built, one of which held 1,935,900 cubic feet. Sold earth banks, built against a wall of stringy bark saplings constructed and laced with vertical props, were built. In 1914, the company was reformed as Cock’s Pioneer Gold and Tin Mines NL, another power station was constructed at the western end of the township, near the junction of Clear and Reid's Creeks. From 6,800,000 cubic yards of material processed, the returns were 64,397 ounces of gold and 855 ton of tin. Cocks Pioneer mine then moved the barge downs stream and continued sluicing. In 1929 Cocks Pioneer Electric Gold and Tin Mining Company ceased operations due to a drop in values. Cock’s Pioneer Gold and Tin Mines NL carried on large-scale hydraulic sluicing operations until 1941. mines, mining, gold, tin, gold mining, tin mining, sluicing, men, cocks pioneer, el dorado, eldorado

This photograph depicts Cocks Pioneer Gold & Tin Sluicing Company, N.L. (no liabilities) site No.3 and is looking from the east side of the site. The image is captured within a small valley creek bed and presents the conditions in which mining was evolving in the early 1900s. In the foreground are remnants of components such as flume pipes, timber and iron pieces, mixed with rocks and rubble. These appeared to have connections to the small processing sluice plant featured in the background. The scale of the processing plant appears to be relatively small with the structure resembling a shack or cottage built from iron and positioned upon a floating pontoon. This is known as dredge sluicing, essentially a floating factory, that was capable of covering large areas of the lake and dams. As this dredge was compact it could maneuver in tight spaces, which larger structure could not. The size of the figures at the front opening, which appears to be a doorway, indicate the scale of this very modest production plant. Scaffolding on the roof and to the left process alluvial from the stream floor into sluicing boxes, which filtered deposits passing over a series of ripples to collect the heavier material such as gold. For around the last 70 years, a familiar sight on the Western Highway at Stawell West has been the Roadhouse/Service Station known as ‘Winston Lodge.’ The building was constructed on Crown Land over the years 1950-1952 by local builders, Mr. Bobby Briggs and Mr. Clem Faulkner for Mrs. Winifred Jenkins. Briggs and Faulkner also handled the construction of the new E.S. and A. Bank building in Main Street. Mrs. Jenkins realised that a stopover was needed in Stawell for both truckies and travellers alike. The family believe that the daughter of Mrs. Jenkins, Lyla drew up the plans for Winston Lodge in an exercise book and the construction was erected from these primitive sketches. Winston Lodge finally opened for business on Saturday March 1st 1952 after many delays due to building material shortages and was an immediate success with local farmers and interstate truckies. The conditions were basic, but the food was excellent in the style of the period – soups, roast dinners and hot apple pies with fresh cream from a dairy on Halls Gap Road. All the cooking was done on a wood fired double oven stove with water pipes running through the firebox to provide the hot water for the Lodge. The name Winston Lodge is quite a story. The family of Mrs. Jenkins believe that a financial backer of the construction was a family by the name of Johnston. So, a combination of WINifred and JohnSTON became Winston Lodge. It was not named after the English Prime Minister of the day Sir Winston Churchill but maybe Winifred Jenkins was a supporter of the PM. Winifred eventually sold the Lodge in December 1957 and in the years since there have been many owners/proprietors and the building has been saved from demolition on more than one occasion. One of the proprietors was a Mr Len Hall, who at the time, was also the proprietor of the Café at the Stawell Drive- In Theatre where he served T-Bone steaks, hamburgers, hot dogs and fish & chips to the theatre goers. It was reported in the Stawell Times and Pleasant Creek Chronicle on Saturday March 5th 1960 that a sign had been erected at Winston Lodge to mark the opening of Stawell’s first Motel. Some small Motel units had been constructed on the Eastern side of Winston Lodge to cater for the travelling public and also for the truckies who had stopped for a meal and a comfortable bed. Even though the name ‘Winston Lodge’ disappeared from the front of the building in 2020 when renovations took place, it will always be referred to locally as ‘Winston Lodge.’ Two Black and White Photographs One building Lodge.
