This is a programme, produced in-house for the Annual Display in 1955 of the Warrnambool Wesley Girls’ Gymnasium Club. It shows that the instructress was Mrs V. Last and the pianist, Mrs B. Utting. There were 29 items in the display with the performers in various age groups. Gymnasium Clubs for both boys and girls, organized by the Warrnambool Methodist Church, were well-established in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It is not known when these clubs ceased to operate but church youth clubs of various kinds continue to operate and gymnastic exercises of some sort would still be one of their activities. The first Wesleyan church service was held in Warrnambool in 1847 and the first chapel was opened in 1851. By the early 1900s the church was known as the Methodist Church and in 1977 after a merger with some other Protestant Churches the church today is known as the Uniting Church with the Warrnambool Uniting Church now located in Koroit Street. This programme is of interest as an example of the type of recreational activity sponsored by churches in the 1950s in Warrnambool. Gymnastic Clubs continue to be a popular activity for youth. This is a sheet of paper folded in two. It is buff-coloured (now faded) and has black typed material on the four pages. The current school, Albion Primary School, No 4265 opened in 1926. It was built on a site once owned by John Fitzgerald (1850s). The land was later acquired by H. V. McKay who had transferred his Sunshine Harvester Works to the area in 1905 - 7. In 1920, the Albion railway station was moved nearer Ballarat Road at the request of Mr McKay. More people came to live in the area including soldier settlers.Albion Primary School's mission is to 'Aim High' in all we do so that our students grow to be socially capable, reach their full academic potential and become caring, respectful community minded people. Albion Primary School is located in a residential area in Albion, a small pocket of the local government area of Brimbank, approximately 10 kilometres west of Melbourne and was established in 1926. Our current enrolment is 199 students. We have a rich cultural diversity amongst our school community. The school is set around a courtyard with spacious playing areas including a grassed oval, running track, games courts, an adventure playground, sand pit, jumping pits, shady courtyard and garden areas, a vegetable garden and fruit tree orchard. This banner was constructed by a group of Deacons and Deaconesses at a National Diaconate Conference held in Melbourne in February 1993. The banner was originally held at Catherine Ritchie House. It is significant because it was put together by a group of Deacons who were ordained in December 1992 and Deaconesses who gathered for the biennial National Diaconate Conference which was held in Melbourne in February 1993 prior to the formal establishment of DUCA (Diaconia UCA, the national body of Deacons and Deaconesses in the Uniting Church in Australia). This conference happed at a time leading up to a special service in Wesley Uniting Church in Melbourne when 12 Deaconesses were ordained as Deacons in Feb 1993. The Rev. Dr Robert Gribben was born in 1943 in country Victoria where he was educated through primary and secondary state schools. He entered Queen’s College in 1961 in order to study degrees in law and arts, but after two years discontinued his legal studies and completed his Bachelor of Arts whilst beginning his candidature for the Methodist ministry. In 1965 he and his wife Susan became engaged, but before he could begin his theological studies he was offered the opportunity to undertake his theological studies in Cambridge University in Wesley House. After Susan completed her law degree with honours at Melbourne University, she followed Robert to England in June 1967, and they were married in June 1968 as Robert was completing his Cambridge B.A. He’d received notice that his first Methodist ministry appointment was to be in “Portland No. 2”, but as they had six months before he was to take that up, they moved to India where Robert worked for the Student Christian Movement and Susan for the Church of South India sorting out their legal records. Robert’s placements that followed in the Methodist Church were Portland and Heywood and Highbury Grove Kew, and in the Uniting Church as chaplain of Ormond College, Trinity Church North Balwyn, General Secretary of the Victorian Council of Churches, Wesley Church Melbourne, and Professor of Worship and Mission at the UCA Theological Hall and UFT. He formally retired in 2008. He has been involved with, lectured in, studied at, worked for, chaired committees or directed at one or more times — La Trobe University, Christian Television Association, Australian Consultation on Liturgy, UCA Assembly committees, Lincoln College, England, Brugge Catholic Faculty, Oxford Institute for Methodist Theological Studies, Graduate School in Ecumenism at Bosse, the English Language Liturgical Consultation, World Methodist Council, World Council of Churches, Christian Unity Working Group, the Victorian Casino and Gambling Authority, Centre for Ecumenical Studies, Cambridge Society of Australia, Fellow of the School of Historical Studies Melbourne University, Queen’s College Council, Fellow of Queen’s College, Editor of the Australian Journal of Liturgy, Professorial Fellow of Charles Sturt University, President of the Cornish Association of Victoria, and member of the Council of the Genealogical Society of Victoria. He has written some seven books and edited both editions of Uniting in Worship. Reverend Denis Oakley was ordained in 1972 and served at Casterton, Tally Ho Boys Village, W/S 1975-1990, SE and Brighleigh. In this article Reverend Oakley was coordinator of the Inquiry Task Group for the Children's Welfare Association of Victoria. Cato College had agreed to merge with Wesley College in 1989, and Renton, who was in 1987 the chaplain at Wesley College Glen Waverley, had accepted the appointment to be Principal of Cato College in 1988, its last year of separate existence, and then Head of the Cato or Elsternwick Campus from 1989. Cato College in 1987 had Miss Dulcie Brookshaw as acting Principal. John Norman, who had been Principal of Cato, left in 1986. Robert Renton had been ordained in 1974 as Presbyterian minister in North Essendon, then was chaplain at Penleigh & Essendon Grammar School from 1975 to 1985. He continued at Wesley College as Head of Campus firstly at Elsternwick and then Prahran until 2007. For 12 months he was acting Principal of Wesley. After retirement at the end of 2007 he took up the placement of Presbytery Minister Administration at the Presbytery of Port Phillip West, and retired permanently on February 28, 2017, aged 71. Rev.
