This mobility aid was housed under the old stage area of the Soldiers Memorial Institute building in Pall Mall Bendigo. When the renovations to the building began in late 2016 the Aid was removed and restored by the Bendigo District RSL Men in Sheds program and is now on display in the same building now called Bendigo Military Museum. The Soldiers Memorial was the HQ of the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch. It is not known the origin of the Aid but it was most likely used by disabled Bendigo RSL members post WW1.Three wheeled Mobility Aid. Front wheel is 41cm dia pneumatic, 32mm wide, rear wheel 68cm dia, width 52mm wide. The right wheel axle has a sprocket & chain assembly, the left is free wheeling, both have mud guards. Frame is tubular steel painted reddish colour, the seat and back rest are brown leather, seat sides are timber, there are two timber platforms in front, the top one is adjustable the bottom one is fixed. The chair is steered via a long metal handle fixed to the wheel frame. Mr Ernie Fitzgerald of Tarrawingee, traveled to Wangaratta, a distance of 14 Kilometres on Market days for his provisions. He was pulled along by his one of two dogs attached to a hand held leather strap (recounted by a witness who remembers Mr Fitzgerald's weekly visit to Wangaratta for supplies at The CoStore). This vehicle remains in possession of his family. This was an unique mode of transport in the 1930's, the witness was a child at the time and remembers Mr Fitzgerald and his dogs and the cart quite clearly. This is a unique mode of transport for the area, is documented and still in existence. Legacy raised funds from the sale of Christmas cards for many years. In 1989 they chose artwork by a Junior Legatee (name not known at the moment) to feature on the cards. Also a photo of a girl in a motorised wheel chair selling the Christmas cards and Legacy puddings in a street. Photos were taken by Susie Howard who was publicity officer for Legacy at the time. Her parents lived at the Crest, Panton Hill where they ran the school. Barrie, Billies brother married Pam Chevallier a relation of the Chevalliers, they were later divorced, then he married Helen Kohn with whom I nursed, she was in Elizabeth Cottee' s [Exon' s ] group at the Alfred. Elizabeth WEBBER nee EDDY. c1851 - 1928, the daughter of James & ... EDDY was born in Cornwall cl 851. At the time of her marriage she was living at her father's home in Ballarat where James EDDY was a ginger beer manufacturer. Elizabeth, who was 21 years of age exchanged marriage vows with the Reverend Samuel Phelp WEBBER on 4th April 1871. The groom who had left Cornwall in April 1869, was 29 years of age.| The wedding rites, performed by the Rev. Richard WARREN, were those of the Bible Christian Church which at a later date combined with various branches of the Wesleyian to become at the end of the 19'h century, the Methodist Church of Australia.| During Samuel's ministry, he and his wife moved around Victoria - in the goldfields of Ballarat & Sandhurst, later named Bendigo; Horsham and Daylesford and a city parish in Fitzroy. He was also (sic) President Conference B.C.C.| Samuel died during the summer of 1897, on the 14th February, St| Valentine's Day.| It is thought by a family member that this couple had five children, three girls and two boys.| After his death, Elizabeth who was confined to a wheel chair lived with her children. While visiting a daughter in Adelaide she died on Christmas Eve 1928.| Elizabeth,' with a younger daughter made baby wear to augment their income. This daughter's daughter, Beryl married W. A spokeshave is a hand tool used to shape and smooth woods in woodworking jobs such as making cart wheel spokes, chair legs, paddles, bows, and arrows. The tool consists of a blade fixed into the body of the tool, which has a handle for each hand. Historically, a spokeshave was made with a wooden body and metal cutting blade. With industrialization metal bodies displaced wood in mass-produced tools. Being a small tool, spokeshaves are not suited to working large surfaces. The name spokeshave dates back to at least the 16th century, though the early history of the tool is not well documented. The name spokeshave reflects the early use of the tool by wheelwrights. The first spokeshaves were made of wood usually beech with steel blades, before being largely superseded by the development of metal-bodied spokeshaves in the latter half of the 19th century, though many woodworkers still use wooden spokeshaves. Due to their widespread use and versatility vintage wooden spokeshaves remain commonly available and relatively low in price. Spokeshaves consist of a blade or iron secured to the body or stock of the tool, which has two handles one for each hand. The bottom surface of the tool is called the sole. The blade can be removed for sharpening, and adjusted to vary the depth of the cut. An early design consisted of a metal blade with a pair of tangs to which the wooden handles were attached, as with a draw knife. Unlike a draw knife, but like a plane, spokeshaves typically have a sole plate that fixes the angle of the blade relative to the surface being worked. There are a wide variety of different types of spokeshave, suited to different trades and applications. A now vintage tool made by an Australian manufacture in NSW who specialised in making pruning shears, hacksaw frames and heel shaves under the Erskin brand name. This tool is now sought after by collectors even though it was probably made in the first quarter of the 20th century. Like a plane, spokeshaves typically have a sole plate that fixes the angle of the blade relative to the surface being worked. By the twentieth century metal handles and detachable blades had become the most common. Preston Tools was an English tool making company also known as E.P. Tools and Edward Preston Tools. Edward Preston Sr. (1805-1883) was first listed as a plane maker at 77 Lichfield Street in the 1833 Birmingham Directory but it is believed he may have started business there as early as 1825. Around 1850 his son, Edward Preston Jr. (1835-1908) left school to join his father's business and he later started up his own "wood and brass spirit level manufactory" at 97-1/2 Lichfield Street by 1864. By 1866 Edward Jr. had added planes, routers, joiners, coach, gun, cabinet and carpenters tools to his line, and the following year he moved his shop from his father's address and relocated to 26 Newton Street, before moving again to a much larger premises at 22-24 Whittall Street. This wooden spokeshave was used in the making of ship model Sovereign of the Seas. It would have been used to shave and shape wood in a similar way that a plane would be used. Its name comes from its use for shaping curved objects such as wheel spokes, oars, paddles, chair legs and bows. It is part of a collection of objects used by Jim Williams, maker of fine ship models from about 1930-1955. Most of the components for the models, as well as many of the tools, were handmade by Jim Williams. Jim’s family has donated the ship model “Sovereign of the Seas” and many tools, accessories and documents used in the making of this and other ship models have been donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village. Ship model of HMS Sovereign of the Seas, scale model of 17th Century English war ship, was handmade and carved from plans, enclosed in airtight glass case. All components of that model, including even the smallest pulleys, were hand crafted using tools designed and made by Jim. Outstanding details include functional rigging and moving cannons. The hobby is often chosen by serving and retired mariners who appreciate the connection with maritime history. This spokeshave was used by local Warrnambool man, Jim Williams, who was employed at Cramond and Dickson clothing store, and then at Fletcher Jones menswear for 27 years. It was used in making components for the model of the historic ship, the Sovereign of the Seas. The Sovereign of the Seas was a historic 17th century English war ship with important maritime heritage. Spokeshave; two-handled, medium coloured wood tool, slightly curved centre. The front has two blade screws protruding from it, the back has a flat ‘sole’ with removable brass blade attached by screws. This spokeshave is part of a collection of tools and accessories once used by Jim Williams, maker of a series of ship models 1930-1955 including “HMS Sovereign of the Seas”.
