Kiewa Valley Historical Society
Wheelchair
After WWII demand for wheelchairs increased. The original wheelchairs were driven by the patient's hands pushing the wheels. Later a motor was added. Then the motor and battery were built into the chair under the seat. This was followed by developments in ergonomics (comfort), controls, comfort and performance.See KVHS 1796, KVHS 1797Used by Wilma Davies, a Kiewa Valley resident, who suffered from polio from the early 1950s.2 large wheels - The outer wheel is steel and the inner is rubber with metal spokes attached. The foot plates are of ribbed steel. The ribbed seat is blue made of thick canvas as is the back of the chair. Some plastic has been glued on the back. The arm rests are also covered with old torn plastic. There is a metal stick on the side used to brake the chair by being pulled enabling it to touch the wheel and slow it down or stop it from turning."Sibbing / Melbourne" on the foot platespolio, wheelchair, pandemic -

Correspondance to Wheelchair Sports Victoria, unknown year, unknown
Single sheet of hotel stationery, from the National Convention Centre in Canberra, containing correspondence from an unidentified source to 'Shona', The note details a contribution of photographs that the unidentified author of the note donated to Wheelchair Sports Victoria.14/2 Hi Shona - recognise this paper!! I found these "antique" photographs, & since I'd heard WSV were setting up some historical records, I thought you might like them. - The four kids are the first Pacific School Games Team ~1986: Campbell Message, Bobby Dunn (I think), Andrew Power & Tamlyn Dunn with Cynthia Power. I think this was the 1st time the disabled kids were integrated into the team. - The B'ball one is the year the Aussie won at Stoke, ~1987 - Michael Norton winning at the 1986 National Wheelchair Games. Photo of Senator Barney Cooney (standing on left) with the recipients of two new wheelchairs. Senator Cooney represented the Department of Veterans Affairs when he presented the wheelchairs and a cheque for $7,000 to President George Woodward at Legacy House. The article in the Answer newsletter mentions: 'The grant of $7,000 will greatly assist Legacy's programs by covering the cost of bus hire needed for the regular outings organised during the year and the wheelchairs will provide additional assistance allowing more Junior Legatees to participate in activities.' After the presentation the junior Legatees went to the cinema and 10 pin bowling. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents were invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aimed to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp this also gave the mothers some respite.
