The Austin Hospital in Melbourne established a Spinal Injuries Unit in 1957, and soon after helped pioneer the development of wheelchair sports in Australia. Bruno Moretti was a key early Australian Paralympian, and a gold and silver medallist in the Paralympics during the 1960s. A founding and later life member of Disability Sport & Recreation, Moretti continued to contribute to the disabled sports movement after his retirement from competition.
