Aime Louis Ruedin (1847- 5/6/1896) was the son of Swiss immigrants Louis and his wife Catherine Schiener. Aime married Johanna Haemsen (1850 - 1909). in 1870. They planted extensive vineyards at Huntly and supplemented their income by selling fruit from their orchards. They had 7 children. In May 1903, fire began in the Ruedin home and spread to the winery. Some vats and winemaking equipment were save but approx 4000 gallons of casked wine was lost.Bendigo Advertiser ''The way we were'' from Tuesday, December 9, 2003. On the winery: the Ruedin family at their winery and vineyard at Huntly, circa 1890, Johanna and Aimie Louis Ruedin are pictured with their four sons. The woman with the youngest son is possibly one of Johanna's sisters, Bertha or Maria Amelia Burstall. The winery and home were destroyed by fire in 1903. This cask bung came from the brewery of Sheldrick and Co. The New Brewery (Warrnambool), founded by Walter Sheldrick and Thomas Price as partners in a company, was situated at the corner of Timor and Fairy Streets. It was known as Sheldrick and Co. and operated from 1868 to 1922 with John McGee and Company running the business after 1894. In 1922 the business was sold to Ballarat, Melbourne Co-operative and Carlton and United Breweries. The casks, used for wine and spirits, were in 1892 cleaned by steam and a lifting device was used to transport the casks from the cellars to the delivery wagons. This is a most significant item as one with a clear provenance and used in the brewery business of Sheldrick and Co., a major industry in Warrnambool in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is an example of the equipment use in the brewery business more than a 100 years ago. This is circular cask bung or stopper with the outer shell made of brass and the stopper insert made of cork. There is a screw thread on the metal. Both the brass and the cork are slightly worn.Inscribed on the metal:‘Sheldrick & Co. Warrnambool’sheldrick and co., sheldrick’s brewery

The original barrel was tapered outwards from top to base. It had three iron bands. Only the top and base remain. Barrels with outward tapering bases are balanced and stable. Barrels contain a wide range of contents, both liquid and dry, from wines and spirits to cement. Ships have used barrels as shipping containers for cargo. Specially made rope slings were used to move the barrels to and from the ships by rope blocks and cranes. A huge quantity of cement was brought to Warrnambool in barrels to construct the Breakwater, which was completed in 1890.This parts of a wooden barrel represent the containers used for cargo imported from England into Australia in the 19th and early 20th centuries. As an example, the vessel Edinburgh Castle was wrecked in Lady Bay, Warrnambool, in 1888. The cargo onboard was a consignment of casks, or barrels of cement for the construction of Warrnambool’s new Breakwater, which was completed in 1890. Ancient Greek and Roman first used spigots in their bathhouses for obtaining water from aqueducts, routing it into pipes and buildings, and finally into their tubs or baths. The subject spigot or tap in Flagstaff collection was used in wine, beer, or spirits barrels to dispense the liquid contained within. A spigot definition is a device that controls the flow of liquid from a container. As mentioned earlier the Greeks and Romans created theirs for use in plumbing water later spigots were adapted to use in barrels or casks.
