These items are from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. This image captures Koki Alpine Lodge in 1967. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. This article provides a biographical overview of William Northcott, an accomplished English-born cornetist. Born in Devonshire, England, in 1811.He began studying music at age nine under the renowned cornetist Norton. He demonstrated rapid progress, leading to early opportunities in military bands. He joined the British Navy as a young teenager, initially aiming to serve on the St.Jean d'Acre during the Crimean War. He played the cornet aboard the Princess Royal and later the St. Jean d'Acre, becoming popular among officers and crew. William participated in significant events such as the Crimean War and the fall of Sebastopol before returning to England in 1856. He Continued naval service on the "Conqueror" (Mediterranean cruise, 1856–1859) and then the "Nile," where he served as leading cornet player and soloist. Accompanied the Prince of Wales on a tour of Canada, earning high praise for his performances.International Musical Caree. rAfter ten years in the British Navy, traveled to Australia to join his family and founded the Northcott Sandhurst Brass Band, introducing popular "sacred concerts." Moved to New Zealand, briefly led a band in Christchurch, and attempted gold mining before returning to music with a successful concert tour. On route to America, organized a concert in Honolulu and was hired by the local government to form and lead a band, which he developed into a respected ensemble. William arrived in San Francisco in 1871, performed as a soloist in a major benefit concert for Chicago fire victims, and gained popularity on the West Coast. Later he moved to New York City, performing with prominent groups and artists, including Henry Tissington and Mme. Parepa Rosa, and joined Carneross' Minstrels. Early Engagements (1873–1875):Solo cornetist at Congress Hall, Cape May, under Simon Hassler (summers of 1873, 1874, 1875). Performed with the San Francisco Minstrels (fall/winter 1873–74) and at the Chestnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia (fall/winter 1874). Centennial Exhibition (1876):Specially engaged to perform for several exhibitors, attracting large crowds (20,000–30,000 people daily).Played for major companies (Hook & Hastings Organ Co., Knabe Piano Co., Stieff Piano, etc.) and with the Centennial Band. Demonstrated remarkable endurance by performing multiple daily sets throughout the event.Subsequent Engagements (1877–1879): Soloist for the Permanent Exhibition (1877–79). Eastern Meadowlarks live throughout the grasslands and farms in eastern North America. On the ground, their brown-and-black dappled upperparts camouflage the birds among dirt clods and dry grasses. When in flight or perching, they reveal bright-yellow breasts and bellies, and a striking black chevron across the chest. The Eastern Meadowlark has a diet which consists of mainly insects and seeds. These birds forage by walking on the ground and taking insects and seeds from the ground and from low plants. In winter, these birds may choose to forage in flocks. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century.This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This Eastern Meadowlark has a yellow breast and throat with black plumage in the shape of a 'V' on it's throat. This particular specimen has a long pointed bill which is in the shape of a spear. The crown of the bird is a dark brown and it also has lighter brown/yellow stripes on the brow. The back, wings, and tail are light brown with dark brown mottling. This specimen stands upon a wooden platform and has an identification tag tied around its leg. "PHYLIS CHAN" wearing her winter Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Uniform and hat". 2. "ALEC CHEW M.B.E. was a Prisoner of War in Ambon, an island off the western tip of Irianjia. He escaped with 7 other prisoners, and tramped across the island away from the camp. With the help of local islanders and Dutch authorities, they used a variety of canoes, prau, and boats to island hop their way to Darwin. Shortly afterwards, Alec returned to the islands hoping to rescue other stranded soldiers. He later joined "Z Force". commandos who remained behind enemy lines to cause disruption to the enemy and gain as much useful information as possible for the allied armies. 3. "GEORGE FONG" joined the RAAF in 1942. He was an Engineering student at Melbourne University and a talented jazz musician. George was mustered as an airman pilot, commissioned in 1943, and sent to Britain. Woodpile Robyn Price 1988 Entrant No. 73 Ref: Series 34, Items 91, 92 SHIRE OF ELTHAM COMMUNITY PHOTOGRAPHIC SURVEY Photography is an artform which many of us practice, sometimes purely for artistic pursuit, sometimes to record the people and events in our lives. In 1988, as part of a local Bicentennial project, the Shire of Eltham conducted the Eltham Community Photographic Survey. Up to 100 entries were to be selected by a panel of photographers for entry into the Eltham Photographic Survey Exhibition. Entries had to be submitted by May 13, 1988. Entrants whose images were selected for the exhibition were contacted and requested to further submit an entry form providing entrant’s name, area of residence, age, and proposed captions. These details were then used to produce labels for the exhibition mounts. Where negatives had not been supplied, these were requested to support the display of printed enlargements mounted on 10” x 8” cardboard. The mounted prints were made available post exhibition for sale at $8.50 each for colour prints and $7.00 for B&W prints. Residents in the Shire were invited to collect a free roll of film and take a photograph of what they either liked or did not like about the area. A total of 160 entrants submitted multiple entries for the exhibition. Of those selected for exhibition, entrants ranged in age from 9 to 70 years. All custom colour and black and white printing for the exhibition was completed by Wattle Studios of Eltham. The Eltham Photographic Survey was jointly auspiced by the Shire of Eltham and Wattle Studios, of 953 Main Road, Eltham. It was then displayed at the Were Street Theatre, Montmorency from Friday, June 24 to Thursday, July 7. Series 34: Eltham Community Photographic Survey 1988 - Prints & Documentation Series consists of 117 photographs of Shire scenes taken by members of the community. Items I - 41 are larger photographs mounted on card, which were exhibited. Items 42 - 117 are unmounted copies, alternative takes and other entries. Corresponding negatives contained in Series 35: Eltham Community Photographic Survey 1988 – Negatives which consists of 267 colour and B&W negatives and one colour slide of Shire scenes taken by members of the community. The negatives are arranged by the entrant number of the photographer. The Eltham Community Photographic Survey collection is significant to the local community as it was curated by the local community - ordinary people of all ages - representing what they liked and did not like in the area where they lived. It represents an unfiltered representation of the Shire of Eltham as it was in 1988. It also represents one of many projects as part of the national programme of events and celebrations to commemorate the bicentenary. It is a time capsule of life in the 1980s of this urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north. This is the program for the exhibitions and activities conducted by the Art Gallery of Ballarat in the winter of 2015. It includes the exhibition of the works of James Meek, of particular interest to Warrnambool as Meek was resident there for a number of years in the 19th century. The Ballarat Art Gallery is the largest and oldest regional art gallery in Australia, being established in 1884. The booklet is of interest as it shows the depth and variety of exhibitions and activities held at a regional art gallery. It includes the exhibition of the works of James Meek, a 19th resident of Warrnambool where he was well-known as a fishing company operator, a punt operator, a fisherman, a writer and lecturer and a gold prospector in the Otway Ranges. His calligraphy works are of great interest, both artistically and historically and one of his works belonging to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society was loaned to Ballarat for this exhibition. This is a booklet of 32 pages containing the program of the Art Gallery of Ballarat for Winter 2015. It contains logos of sponsors, a floor plan of the gallery, black and white and colour photographs and sketches and printed material on each exhibition. Netta Fuller and her husband Alec were long-term residents of Kew. As a boy, Alec had attended East Kew Primary School and was later highly involved in the Kew Presbyterian Church during the 1950s and 60s. Netta's passion was for historic clothing and its exhibition. In 1985, Netta Fuller and Elizabeth Pace launched a parade of garments sponsored by Kew Historical Society at Holy Trinity Church, Kew. The parade was called 'Downunder Dressmakers' and included a collection of over fifty items of clothing dating from 1800 to 1984. The collection included dresses, hats, scarfs, capes, sporting costumes etc. The core of the parade consisted of a collection of 19th century costumes worn by the ancestors of a Miss Gertrude Murray, a resident of Blackburn. In sourcing items for her collections, Netta Fuller collected costumes stored in old trunks and wardrobes, or even purchased from opportunity shops. (During the period in which she collected and exhibited costumes, the latter could often be a reliable source for the purchase of historic and aesthetically significant costumes.) Not satisfied with purchasing authentic costumes of the period, Netta also used these as models for artistic recreations. Following her retirement from both collecting and exhibiting, Netta Fuller donated a number of 19th Century garments to the Kew Historical Society's costume collection. A number of garments were parts of costumes such as bodices, while others were complete outfits. Some of the latter exhibit signs of old damage, however very few of the costumes had been modified to enable them to be worn in exhibitions. Provenance, apart from that the costumes were donated by Netta Fuller after 1985 is limited to donor information, although some of her donations may have originally been part of the collection owned by the Murray family. While the costumes are old and therefore historic, provenance is less important than the representativeness and/or rarity of the costumes. On Friday the 26th and Saturday the 27th of May, 1978, an art and craft exhibition was held as a fundraising event in support of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria (RAAV). Titled, "Living with Arthritis - Aids to Daily Living", the exhibition was held at St Andrew's Parish Hall in Brighton. A second "Living with Arthritis" exhibition was held two months later in Footscray. Henceforth, the respective events were commonly referred to as "the Brighton exhibition" and "the Footscray exhibition". A fashion parade and panel discussion were also held as part of the two-day event. On the Saturday, the fashion parade was hosted by special guest MC, Australian actor, Reg Gorman.
